Title: DAC-9H shipping now
Post by: rustydoglim on 3 Nov 2018, 06:51 pm
https://nuprimeaudio.com/product/dac-9h/ (https://nuprimeaudio.com/product/dac-9h/)

The DAC-9H differs from DAC-9 with additional balanced 4.4mm ‘Pentaconn’ socket and 3.5mm standard stereo headphone outputs that support Single Ended Unbalanced, Fully Balanced and Active Balanced Ground Driving headphone amplifier.
We only added headphone amp, the rest remains exactly the same.

Interesting! Where would you place the headphone amp on your amp comparison chart?

It uses the same design as DAC-10H, but without as much power.

While the Sony Balanced connector is an interesting addition, I would have hoped for a more professional 1/4" phone plug rather than the cell-phone earphones 3.5mm connector.

Also, the wording error of "Balance" without the D also found in the back connections is something that should have been corrected.

Strangely enough, the literature on the web page correctly describes the "Balanced" audio connector, yet the case reads "Balance".

I will forever insist that attention to ALL details is important.  If the same 'lack of care' were put into resistor values or cap capacity, then the amp will be really poor.  Why is it less important to write correctly?

Best regards,
Rafa.

Agreed. The same things bother me too, and affect my perception of the product.

There is a much simpler explanation.  Non native English engineers. They can design the best electronics in the world, but handling the language could be a problem.  I reviewed the website but missed the case.

Rusty, people here refer to the front panel of the DAC...
If the production has not started yet, you still have the time to correct that too.

Actually I am not sure.
I think the use of Balance is correct.
Balanced Connector
But if used alone, it should be Balance.

Any English major here care to comment?

Well, it depends on the context like so much about English grammar.

Regardless of whether you can fit "Connector" on there, it's still "Single Ended" and "Balanced":

I work in localization. We think about these things all the time, even if it makes our heads hurt.

Another thing that makes my head hurt? That low-end 3.5 mm jack. IMHO it should be the professional 1/4" size.

Nouns, verbs, whatever.

I disagree.  I think using Balance as a noun for the I/O is correct. But if you want to use Balanced with the context, can't say it is wrong either.

The noun is "Connector", even if it's not there. Don't think about it too much or your head will hurt. Just rely on native speakers and industry-standard usage.

This is a balanced signal/connector.
This signal/connector is balance.
Singaporean's English isn't too bad either.

Singaporean English may actually be more correct in other cases, but "Balanced" and "Single-Ended" are the industry standard.

I am just having fun. Whatever, it is already done.  I will ask them to look into this.

Yes, in the end we all know where to plug in. :-)

It uses the same design as DAC-10H, but without as much power.

I'm surprised, as in my experience the "9" line includes smooth AKM-based DACs and warm amps, while the "10" line is neutral ESS-based DACs and reference amps. No?

Oh, I am talking about the headphone amp, not the DAC section.
Headphone amp is totally different from the DAC and we use discrete transistor to craft the circuit (instead of opamp)

No worries, I understood (I think). So it has a different amp? Where does it place on your amp comparison chart? As I don't like my STA-6 but very much like my STA-9 and have similar tastes in headphone amplifiers, this is important to me.

Well, I'm also not a native English speaker, but this one is a no-brainer:
- Two forces fight for "Balance" (noun)
- Once the conflict is resolved, you end up with a "Balanced" scenario (adjective).  Not a "Balance" solution.
- The connector uses two signals that try to "Balance" the audio signals (noun), and you end up with a "Balanced" connector (adjective describing the connector).

But grammar and spelling aside, can you Jason please comment on the decision to go for 3.5mm instead of 1/4"?  It strikes me (and apparently others) as a weird decision.

Thanks,
Rafa.

The decision for 3.5mm is because many newer and popular headphones and earphones are in that format.
See all the newest entry to mid price (for example, Sennheiser HD1 edition Pink Floyd) headphones.
The high end headphones use balanced connector.

I have HPA-9, was thinking about getting DAC-9 to pair with it.
Since DAC-9H is out. I can't decide to get HPA-9/DAC-9 combo or just get DAC-9H and sell the HPA-9 instead.
How does the headphone amp in the DAC-9H compare to HPA-9?
Is the 3.5mm out of DAC-9H designed only for low impedance headphone?
Will it drive 250 ohm headphone, such as beyer DT1990, properly?

I think you should keep the HPA-9. It is under appreciated.
