The DE912p Towers of Awesomeness
« on: 15 Sep 2019, 01:25 am »
I completed these about two months ago as bi amplified speakers with a DEQX digital crossover, but I finally got around to building passive crossovers so they can be driven by a far more simple arrangement of a source and a two channel stereo amp. I prefer the sound of the passive version. Each tower includes twelve 7" Dayton Esoteric midwoofers and nine BG Neo8 PDR tweeters. The crossover is 2nd order for the woofers and 3rd order for the tweeter array. The dimensions are 18"W, 8'H, 1.5"D. A Dayton Audio 12" Ultimax sub in a 2' sealed enclosure, driven by the Dayton 500W plate amp handles the bass from 100hz down. Sensitivity is in the 93+dB range, and they are easily driven to levels of awesomeness by a 200w/ch Krell integrated amp. For perspective on the size, that area behind them is 8' high. The room is 22' wide by 38' deep, with a 12' ceiling.

Nice looking speakers Fred!

Looks like an open baffle variant of the GR Research LS9. What are your crossover points?

They were inspired by the LS9. Using twelve 7" midwoofers gets you the height needed for a nearfiled line array in a large room. The crossover point is 1khz. A few years ago I build a similar pair using 7" Dayton reference midwoofers in a ported enclosure. Out of curiosity I build some open baffles and found I preferred their sound as a dipole, especially the sound of the Neo 8 PDR tweeters, so that's what I did from the start with these. Of course with an open baffle you lose the low bass response, but that's handled by the subwoofer anyway. These roll off at about 100hz. If I had wanted the midwoofers to do bass I would have chosen some with at higher QTS and would have incorporated a wing into the design to increase the apparent width of the baffle.

Cool stuff Fred.
Jealous of the 38x22x12 room though

And you should probably trademark that name before someone else takes it.

So is the "DE912p" supposed to mean:

DE: Dayton Esoteric
9: 9 (tweeters)
12: 12 (midwoofers)
p (passive)

That is correct. The name I should trademark is "The Towers of Awesomeness". Listeners should be required to bow before them as sign of their humility and reverence.
