Title: shiva or tempest?
Post by: jbandpc on 30 May 2003, 01:29 pm
First let me say that tight, clean bass is the priority, with extension a close second. SPL is not a real concern.

If I had enough room and approval to build a 122 liter sealed cabinet, which should I choose, the Tempest (at 122 liters, Q=.707) or the Shiva (at 122 liters, Q<.577)?

Thank you for any response. I don't yet know how to interpret the information given in software.

Lower Q is said to offer the "tighest" bass.  So I guess that means the Shiva.  Have you read the white papers on both alignments?  Some good information in there that may help you decide.

I'm just not quite ready to go the shiva route because I'm not sure what I'll give up in extension.  Any thoughts on this from anybody?

Have you read the white papers at the adire audio site?  They have charts showing the FR for ported, sealed, size of cabinets, etc.
I didn't find much difference in extension in a sealed cabinet between the too.  If you want max extension then go with a ported cabinet.

In that size box it's arguable that the Shiva has (very slightly) more extension (but less output)

I agree that you should go with Q=.577, but you should also check Adire's stock of DLP12s that were custom made for the Canadian company Mirage, I believe. With the caveat that I am no DIY expert, its specs appear to me to be a bit better than either Shiva's or Tempest's, especially fs (low) and QTS (high):

DLP12  fs=16.3Hz Qts=.400
Shiva  fs=21Hz; Qts=.390
Tempest  fs=18.8Hz; Qts=.390

I am sure Dan Wiggins will be happy to help.

you might also look into going with a passive radiator if ported isnt for you.a 12 inch shiva with a 2- 15" passive radiators, saw some one did one and the specs looked awsome.
