Tease! Or do you care to share?  :green:

In all seriousness, hope you guys have a blast and find many, many rooms with good sound. Looks different with vendors in the Lobby.

Sweet!  You'll have to fill in the details some time, I'm curious to know more.

My least favorite part of Audio shows by far. You'd think with all of the experience they've had, both at RMAF and elsewhere, they would have come up with a better plan. Allow people to pick up their badges the day/night before. Ship them through the mail. Something. Anything.

Beautiful gear. Hard to hear because the vendor is chatting. Not able to play our music vinyl only. No imaging. Yikes. Not really blowing my mind here unfortunately this is what I hate about these shows. Vendors talking about nothing while I can't listen.

Tyson’s Notes dc10 Audio Room

General Room Notes – Man, look at those horns and awesome tube amps!  The horns are not just tweeter horns, they also act as a bass horn.  Very cool technology

Sibelius Violin Concerto – Nice start to the day – great tonality, very surprising for a horn speaker.  Ma, 2 rooms in a row with nice sounding horns.

Mahler Symphony 6 – Nice clarion call horn to start.  Good depth.  GREAT dynamics!  Things get a touch hard sounding when things get really loud, probably due to lack of room treatments.

Tom Waits (Long Way Home) – Oh god I forgot how much I hate Jason’s music selections.  These speakers are kind of amazing in that they give a light, almost feathery touch to the top end.  You thing with horns you end up with overly energetic highs.  But here you get subtlety and finesse – kudos!

Natalie Merchant (Peppery Man) – Soundstage is a bit small and shallow on this track.  Again, likely a result of lack of room treatments.  And when Natalie really leans into the mic it turns a bit hard.  Room treatments would help.  From a ‘swing’ and pace standpoint they are really good – groovy.

Pez-I really love the dynamics of this setup! On. Tysons cuts sound very nice. The room gets a little shouty because here is no room treatment. I do love those dynamics! Waits is gritty as the way it should be but a bit shouty again. Merchant has really nice dynamic shift. Surprising these little guys can throw this much sound. Thumbs up from me.

FYI on the Highwater Sound post there was an initial comment that suddenly disappeared and was replaced by the comment that is now showing - not sure if you were aware that you overwrote the initial note!

Keep it up for those of us living vicariously (?) through your reporting!

Tyson’s Notes dc10 Audio Room

General Room Notes – Oh these are freaking cool looking – all one piece waveguided speakers.  No room treatments, we’ll see how highly directional speakers do with that.  Fully active speakers, with DAC, amps and preamps built in.  Very cool!!!  Finally someone that is building speakers with technology from this century :D

Sibelius Violin Concerto – Sounds good, but I think these speakers might benefit from tubs amps.  Not hard sounding speakers, but some of the emotion is missing that I know good tube amps can bring

Mahler Symphony 6 – On the other hand, dynamics are off tha hook.  Really good and producing a big sound.  Only criticisim – they are low sounding, so feels like we are looking down on the performers.  Raise them up a bit and I think they could be quite special.

Tom Waits – Another track that tube amps would not go amis on.

Natalie Merchant – Finally a bit of slam and percussiveness.  Gets a bit hard when she goes loud, but less bad than other less directional speakers.

Jason’s Notes

Sibelius violin sounds absolutely gorgeous. Loving the subtlety of it. Sweet and emotive.
Mahler great dynamics and authority.
Tom waits a bit of bass over hang. Excellent soundstage and imaging. A bit dry on the balance. Overall a bit hollow sounding.
Merchant again imaging and soundstage is pretty darn good could be better but they show potential. If put in a room with treatment etc I think these would be phenomenal.

Tyson’s Notes dc10 Audio Room

General Room Notes – Love the look of this room – they look like the evil robot Maximilian from Disney’s Black Hole movie.  Oh god I am old.    This is our first "Holy SHIT" room - awesome technology - the top end is a complete wraparound of electrostatic drivers.  The cabinets are solid 1.5 inch aluminum.  But the CRAZY thing is that you can stand directly between them and then soundstage is still deeper than you are.  It's all the way in the back of the room even when you are standing where Jason is.  F'cking amazing!

Sibelius – They do present a seriously spacious soundstage.

Mahler – Good dynamics.  Top end is a bit hot, probably due to lack of any room treatments, so far a common theme

Tom Waits – Oh, this is really good – there’s more nuance on this track than I’ve heard anywhere so far.  And they sound BIG, which I love.

Natalie Merchant – Huge amounts of clarity on this track.  And soul.  Surprising since there’s no tubes in the system as far as I can tell.  Impressive.

Jason’s Notes
[/quote]

Sibelius wow! I really love the subtle way these speakers interpret Hahns performance. Nice!
Mahler BAM!!!!!! No pussy stuff here!
Tom waits in the sweet spot there's a bit of metallic liveliness. Perhaps just not used to listening to I in directional speakers. I think in the right room this could be much better. But that's not to say it's bad here.
Merchant great imaging overall but again the balance is off IMO. Gave Tyson the sweet spot to seek hat he thinks on vocals.

All that said I can't believe these speakers. There is no place in the room including between the speakers that you can't hear I,aging and soundstage. When you stand between the speakers the image goes behind you! Crazy crazy crazy!!!

Tyson’s Notes  Red Dragon room

General Room Notes – Every year I enjoy this room.  This year they are doing a smaller speaker, the M4, which is a 12 inch version of their other speakers.  And, room treatments!

Music – can’t listen to our track, but good selection of tracks in the room already playing.  IMO these sound every bit as good as their M3 big brothers and for only $1300 it’s ridiculous value.  The main question I always have with inexpensive speakers is ‘can they hang with the big boys’, or is there some level of compromise involved.  In this case I don’t hear any real weaknesses, so yes they can indeed hang with the big boys.

Jason’s Notes

Computer audio room so no tunes of our own. Red hot chili peppers! Heeeyooo hear that great soundstageoooo. There's a twang that I find a bit artificial sounding.
Now treetop flyer. Very realistic except for the uber twang of the guitar again.
I'm sure Tyson is loving it. Open baffle... Ya of course he's writing superlatives and praises as we speak.

Tyson’s Notes  Davialet Room

General Room Notes – Ah, the speaker with all the hype.   Makes the audacious attempt to soud like a big speaker in a very small package.  Do they succeed?

Music – They are no set up for playing CD’s so listening to Clapton from their playlist.  I can say they are smooth and inoffensive and have a lot of upper/mid bass.  Stands are too short though, so again I feel like I’m looking down on the performers.

Wow, a LOT of talking going on in this room.  Making it hard to get a feel for these things beyond that.  Too bad.  I ca tell you that there is absolutely no soundstaging going on at all – everything is just a big wall of meh over in that direction, somewhere.

Jason’s Notes
Alien orb head approach to this setup. The BWs are not running but the orbs are. No pace to sit that makes sense. Can't find the sweet spot. Lots of talking. But here's some pics!!!

Tyson’s Notes  PranaFidelity Room

General Room Notes – Vinyl only here, so can’t play our CD.  The speakers have adjustable tweeters so you can tailor the sound to your room.  Wow, the bass and mid drivers are jumping around like crazy.  Super loud music in this room.  It’s kind of cool how inert the speakers are – just the drivers are moving.  Not in the sweet spot so its hard to get a feel for these guys.  I will say that even at loud volumes they are quite dynamic.

Jason’s Notes
Parma was one of my favorite rooms a couple years back and I missed them last year because of the issue with Tyson being a wuss and getting sick. Dynamic... Err.. Loud is what I get from the setup this year. I really wish vendors would take room treatment seriously. It greatly affects people's perception of these setups because of how loud the rooms get.

Tyson’s Notes  Kii Audio Room

General Room Notes – The speakers that are trying to out-Davialet the Davialets.  Do they succeed?  I read up a bit about them online a couple of days ago.  I liked the work they are doing with rear wave control.

Music – Listening to the stock music tracks from from their server.  These just don’t do it for me.  They sound sort of generically good but really uninspiring.  They are also a bit boomy in the bass, shockingly.  I might just be spoiled by true OB bass though….

Jason’s Notes
Not even going to comment. We were there for about ten minutes and they did nothing but chat between each other.

Tyson’s Notes  Linkwitz Audio Room

General Room Notes – Hey, the new Linkwitz OB’s, I’m a big fan of his work from way back, super excited to hear these babies.  They are certainly one of the most intricate cabinets we’ve seen and the aesthetic is very cool!

Sibelius – Ah, open and spacious.  Captures a ton of emotion in her playing.

Mahler 6 – Yes, room filling sound!  Dynamics?  Check.  Scale up very nicely to the huge orchestra at full forte.  Really good detail detail on the cellos and double basses.  In fact, most detailed bass at the show so far.

Tom Waits – Big, big sound.  And Tom sounds properly gravelly and life-weary.  OK, I’ll say it flat out – this is the best the LW room has sounded, period.  These new speakers are a huge breakthrough compared to the past, and compared to pretty much every other OB setup I’ve heard.

Natalie Merchant – I’m shocked how smooth the sound is that they are getting without any room treatments.  I think having them pulled out in the room a bit and having and OB side null really helps.  And the bass PUNCHES.  Usually bass punch is a weakness of OB speakers, but not here!

Jason’s Notes

Ok the speakers look like a garage project IMO. I don't usually comment on the way gear looks unless it's stellar but these are pretty damn ugly.
Sibelius sounds pretty nice. Lovely violin. And I like the balance of the orchestra behind the lead.
Mahler another great dynamic setup. Nice nice
Tom waits wow HUGE imaging. Voice overloads the room a bit. No treatments. Not the most detailed sound I've heard but pleasant for sure.
Merchant deep male voices sound a bit disembodied but Natalie sounds nice and full.
Overall these ugly ducklings sing like a swan... Well maybe not a swan, a song bird of some sort with ugly plumage but beautiful song... You get the idea.

One of these years I am going to get to RMAF, but in the meantime we've got you guys to tell us how it is, provide amazing coverage and photos. Thanks for all the hard work, even though we know it is a labor of love.

In the meantime, those new Avantgarde's have got to be some of the ugliest speakers I've seen. Low WAF, unless you are in an ultra modern room, but then I doubt they would work with a room full of chrome and glass.

Tyson’s Notes  Vinnie Rossi Audio Room

General Room Notes – Supercapacitors here we come!  This room shows up just how dirty sounding the AC is on pretty much every other room we’ve been in.  This room is quiet and calm, leaving a really great background to actually enjoy the tunes.  An oasis in an otherwise cacophonous show.

Sibelius – Good mysterious presentation of this work.  Nice deep soundstage.

Mahler 5 – Very precise and percussive - martial and almost evil, sounding hahaha! Dynamically this is Mahler ready to stomp all over you and your weak pathetic future.  Love it.

Tom Waits = Most/best laid back groove on this track of the whole show.  Tom Waits with soul.

Natalie Merchant – some of the cleanest and clearest separation of vocals I’ve heard on this track.  And again, SOUL out the wazoo.  Just effortlessly cool and funky.  Really impressive how the system was just a complete chameleon from track to track to track.

Jason’s Notes
Sibelius oops was shooting photos and missed it.

Mahler. The sound is full but not reaching super low. Dynamics are ly nice.

Waits gritty and sorrowful. Wow you feel the lifetime of sorrow this song conveys. This setup is basically the best I've heard so far.

Merchant amazing imaging and soundstage. Nuance like you wouldn't believe. Again bass isn't incredibly deep, but what is there is confident and conveyed in a way that doesn't feel like anything is missing. Did I mention imaging???? Damn man incredible.

Liked it so much I requested Vinnie play some vinyl. thom Yorke Harrowdown hill. Never having heard this on vinyl I'm pretty stoked. I imaging is pretty damn solid again. Awesome stuff.

This is the first system I've heard at the show that I enjoyed beginning to end. Well done.

Tyson's Notes[/u]

Oh snap, finally a manufacturer that is making a serious attempt at making a great universal fit IEM.  I cannot do custom fits because my ear is a weird shape and they won't ever, ever, ever fit right. And yes, I have done it open and closed mouth and no love.  So I've been reduced to using shitty Etymotics for years and years.  When I saw these I was super stoked that I might actually be able to enjoy IEM"s again.  Put them on and.... bliss.  So far above my old stuff that it's not even funny.  I bought them on the spot.  Maybe not quite at the level of the very best custom fit stuff, but I f'ing hate custom fit IEM's.  Best sound from a universal fit, ever.

Thanks for the reporting.  A buddy of mine attended the show today and he was amazed at the Elac floor stander that Andrew Jones was presenting.  He said it was an astonishing speaker for the price of $279 each.  I cannot wait to hear these myself.

Glad you guys made it by dc10/Audio Techne/ZenWave, I'm obviously biased but I do think dc10 and Vapor have some of the best sound I've heard so far. I agree the dc10 room is a bit on the live side but it's not distracting very often. The size and bass extension of the stand mount speakers match the room really well, and bass resolution and texture is super impressive which makes the recreation of bass instruments especially natural sounding.  Vapor hit a home run with the Perfect Storm, the resolution and clarity of these speakers is amazing, possibly the best I've ever experienced. They could charge double easily. I look forward to see what you think...

I agree about Kii, I can't even tell what the speakers sound like as they did not get along with the room very well. I hope they manage to fix the room acoustics issues...

Oh, and definitely go back to check out PranaFidelity again if you have the chance. There is a Luxman CD player right there and he's always happy to play music people bring in. His speakers are especially good imo, some of the best value you'll find. I always thought his 5090 monitors or Odyssey monitors were about the best value out there.

RWJR, the ELAC speakers are excellent. They will probably dominate the <$1k/pair price range. Their upcoming Roon-based music server is amazing too, as is their app-based subwoofer eq. Andrew is a nice guy too, even answered a question about the Pioneer S-1EX speakers I'm getting tomorrow...  :green:  Those speakers were the deal of the century, can't believe they sold so poorly...

You'd probably walk right by this no-name room, but spend a few minutes in the Sakura Systems room 453. I was pleasantly surprised at the sound and ingenuity of his system design. And the speakers are named Nueance (funky spelling)!

I only had my phone with me there so no good photos to share from my camera stick.

On the WBF forum he has a point, the show IS about people.  I wish he would take is own advice and be polite to other people BY TAKING HIS FUCKING CONVERSATION OUTSIDE.  By his own admission he sat there and talked for 30 fucking minutes.  What a dick.

And BTW, those Kii speakers he keeps going on and on about sounded like shit.  Worse than the Davialet speakers and that's not easy!

This.

So many people come to these shows viewing it as a chance to see and hear gear that they otherwise may never get the opportunity to do.

I understand the desire for people to interact with the owners/designers/etc of the gear, but is it really asking so much that these conversations take place out in the hallways or maybe take a break and head down to the lobby, perhaps a bite to eat and share a drink while they chat? (most of the time it seems there are more than enough people representing the company in the room that they can tag in and out to get away for a few).

...... my 2 cents.

It's definitely possible. We will need to hire a camera crew, boom mic operator, and supplies such as loaves of bread. Based on what I saw this year we'll need 30-40 loaves for the next show.
