What are you talking about.  Just checked the website and no mention of UPS, just the emergency shutdown of repairs.

Enlighten me please?

I ordered a pair of LRS back in February and pretty much forgot all about it.

At first I thought it was some tubes from a buddy in NJ so was really confused when I saw the shipper was Magnepan.
Why is Magnepan sending me anything?  Oh, yeah...

Steve,

You might  want to consult a physician. I have had two pairs of speakers on order for a long time but I guarantee you I have not forgotten I ordered them.

You might be right, could be a case of pandemic brain going on here...

It'll be real easy to do a comparison of MMGs, 1.7s, 3.7s and LRS as they're all going to be within 20' of one another!
That'll be fun, I always like comparing audio components.

I dimly remember you ordering them in some thread so you're not the only one suffering memory issues.  Have fun with them once they get there.

I should check, maybe I ordered a pair.  Or a coffee maker, not sure.

Have fun with what?

Probably a combination of parts availability and demand, there was a waiting list before all hell broke loose.

I think they'll mate up well with that CC5 center channel speaker, I'm guessing they'll have the same basic sound.
The best way I can put it is the CC5 has a sharper or brighter sound than the MMGs.

I was looking at home ice cream makers.
I like ice cream, who doesn't?
I'm not sure but I think that's what the FedEx notification is for...

I didn't order a new Norelco and space it, it was a pair of speakers after all.

Steve,
Which pair are the LRS's?
Nice collection can't wait to hear what you think.

It's not the big ones or the medium ones or the ones on hinges so that leaves the skinny guys on the floor.

Well, I wasn't expecting much of anything to be honest.
That's why I gave up, picked up some used 1.7s and forgot about them.
I saw the youtube videos and read a few reviews here and elsewhere and who really knows with these things.

They're breaking in as they just showed up but I was wrong, these are not MMGs that are a little bit better.
They have a winner on their hands.  It seems to be more than just an appetizer and then they set the hook.

I thought the bass was coming from the sub in the corner.
Nope, it's from the Magnepans.
They seem balanced from top to bottom, they're going to take some time to loosen up and I'll replace those staples with some speaker wire this evening and see about getting them up in the air a bit.  They too skinny for the hinges, they have little tacked on wood strips like the 17.s have.  They probably deserve better than to be spaced so oddly, anyway.

Everything says that they respond well to good electronics so eventually I'll hook them up to the big system and see how that goes.
The amp I'm using isn't the brightest sounding thing in the world (Adcom GFA 5400) so I think that explains the strong bass and lower midrange I'm hearing.  The top end is starting to loosen up a bit thanks to Mr. Zappa and his Gibson SG!

I'm thinking if you have something like a small bedroom get these up in the air so the center of them is at ear level, hook up a good integrated or what have you, stick a small sub in the corner and you'd be set.  For not a whole lot of money you could set up a system you wouldn't constantly be nit picking.  If only it did this or that...

In a big room they'd be lost but that's why they make bigger speakers.
For nearfield (which is what I'm doing) or a small-ish room they're exactly right.

They're easy enough to move around, they do sound like a pint sized version of the big boys and I think they're capable of playing back exactly what you put into them.

These are keepers.

One final thought: they sound bigger than they are.  I keep looking at the 1.7s to see if that's where the sound is coming from.
Good job, Magnepan!

These might be useful as a way to get OB bass to match the LRS more closely:

Steve, if you stop watering them, they'll stop growing on your carpet.

Nice bouquet. :thumb:

Here you go:

Do they respond better to better electronics?
Yes, much more so than the MMGs ever would.

Are they as good as the 1.7s?
No.

Are the 1.7s as good as the 3.7s?
No.

Are the much better than the old MMG?
YES!

Where do they really excel?
Near field listening and in a small room.
For what I'm doing (near field for home office) they're just perfect.
Dial in a sub and you've got it made.

I always say you've got to match the equipment with the model.
The higher up the food chain you go the better the gear driving it has to be.

Today I decided to see how the Crown XL1500, which worked so well with the MMGs, would fare.
One and a half songs later the Crown was removed from LRS duty!

The LRS really are good enough to expose the weakest link in the chain, they're not going to gloss over anything.
The Magic 8 Ball predicts a new amplifier in my future...

The Magic 8 Ball never lies.

The UPS man just dropped off a conrad-johnson MF2275 which left the factory and then sat in an unopened box for 7 years.
So far, so good.  No flames, no smoke, no explosions and the sound is just right from top to bottom.

This is just a temporary lash up (obviously).
Right now I have it hooked up to a deHavilland UltraVerve 3 preamp and I think that's how this is going to wind up.
Everything just seems to be a really good match.

As an aside, I hooked the MMGs back up to the Adcom amp and they sound fine so no more screwing around with the boob tube system.

I'm getting closer.
I ordered a power conditioner, the seller packed it really poorly and UPS destroyed it so back to square one on that part.

Got the preamp and amp situation squared away, now I just need a source.
All of the CD players I have sound terrible with the LRS aside from the Rega Saturn.
After hours of agonizing I finally sprung for a used Rega Apollo R.
I think a cabinet for this stuff is being delivered today and after work it's start to spackle and paint the room to put it in.
The only thing left to do will be a small subwoofer to stick in a corner.
