Curious about the shelf life of a Bryston amp. Saw an 25 year old amp for sale that has never been used and wondered if you would just plug it in and use it as a new amp?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

You can also connect it first with an incandescent light bulb in series with the device for some minutes to lower the current and charge the caps gradually. I made one out of an extension cord and a light socket. A low wattage bulb is preferable but not critical. I used a 25 watt one.

Even with a variac you may see smoke.
One of my 3B Pros did that.

The gentleman I purchased the amp from was the son of a recording engineer in Florida . He said the amp was powered up annually to maintain the caps, but was never used in the studio or otherwise . What ever was done or not done the amp looks and works like new.
I took the lid off and not a spec of dust, even smelled new. Anyway , I got lucky , mint condition 25 year old 3B-ST. I love it.
Thanks for the replies.
