Cherry Amp Impedance
« on: 19 May 2019, 05:24 pm »
There is a class d discussion going on at Audiogon Forums    https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/class-d-is-affordable-and-sounds-as-good-or-better-the-ss-valve-why-buy?lastpage=true

A question is being asked as to why the Cherry Amp input impedance is 20k which some think is too low and precludes their use of a tube preamp?

Tommy, maybe you could post an answer here and I'll link it to AF....or maybe use the link above to go to AF and post your reply.

Put simply, Tommy doesn't like tubes; why ruin one of his amps with them?

I’m assuming that there is a sonic reason and hopefully tommy can respond tomorrow.

Does anyone use, or did anyone ever try a tube pre with a Cherry?

No, but I use a passive and it’s a magical combination.
The ultimately in transparency as the Cherries and passive both do not add any color.
It’s all about the quality of the source and the speakers.
This combo is very dynamic and punchy as well.
Would be interesting to also hear from another that used an excellent passive and
a tube preamp.

Well, we DO make the DAC DAC TL, our “tube like” version of the Cherry DAC DAC.  There is a certain “softness” to it, not to be confused with limited bandwith, because response is FLAT (and DC coupled, too).

We’re having a HUGE sale on those, by the way

Almost every decent tube preamp can drive 20kΩ without issue.

Please note our Stereo Maraschino amps have 40kΩ input impedance as opposed to 20kΩ for the rest of the Maraschino line (and Cherry MEGA Amps).
