The BOLDER Cable Company will be showing and playing the latest version of the VMPS 626R with the FST tweeter at the Midwest Audio Fest.

It is taking place this weekend in Lima, Ohio.

For more information, please go to their site:

Midwest Audio Fest

Here are some pictures of the speakers we will be bringing

These speakers have Auricaps, Soundcoat, Full wrap Dark oak veneer and the FST tweeter. Suggested Retail of this pair is $2900.00.

We will also be bringing a VMPS Larger Subwoofer with Soundcoat and Megawoofers.

I hope to be able to meet some members of AudioCircle there.

Wayne -

It seems I remember you posting pictures of another 626R with the spiral ribbon.  Can you comment on the noticeable effects the FST has had on the 626R?  Also, what are your thoughts concerning a possible TRT upgrade for the 626R?  Worth the price?

It seems you've gone all the way with the 626R ( Sound Anchor stands, upgraded feet under the corners, etc.).  Have you tested the effects of adding some type of weight to the top of them?

Are there any other ways you're currently getting "the most" from your 626R's?

I have had this pair for exactly one week. Most of that time was spent with pink noise playing through them to finish up the break-in .

I do not care to have anything on top of the speakers. It may improve the sound but I do want to see the wood veneer that I paid for

I have never heard any of the VMPS speakers with TRT caps so I cannot really comment if they are worth it.

My older pair,  which do not have the full wrap veneer, but do have the Auricaps and Soundcoat, are being used for my rear channels now. I have a full ribbon, 5 channel, SACD rig :D

I feel the FST is, without a doubt, sweeter sounding than the spiral tweeter. The lower crossover and the FST do tend to give a wider sweet spot. Vertical dispersion does seem to be about the same.

I am now using the same NITRO speaker wire that was used with the RM/X at CES.

I did just get some Eighth Nerve room treatments. I will also be using these in Lima.

Wow, the extra $200 for the full wrap dark oak is well worth it!  Those speakers look great.  Huge improvement over the older one with the black front.

Agreed that full veneer wrap should be a no brainer for all but the most frugalphile.  Makes the others look cheap in comparison.  I am not a fan of oak however, though it looks nice.

This is the third pair of 626Rs that I have owned and the best

The first pair I bought were the pair that caused Tyson and Jason to sell their speakers and go VMPS :D  They had the stock caps and the black fronts.

Jason now owns those. I ordered a pair with the Auricaps and wanted to get the front veneered. Brian was having a problem with his cabinet maker at that time. I waited over 8 weeks and the cabinet maker hadn't delivered the goods yet. I told Brian to just send me a pair with black fronts.

Now, the third time was the charm :)  I received them within two weeks, and I think they look great. I happen to like oak.

Wayne,

Just a clarification.  I am not dissing the looks of your speakers.  I am just not a fan of the grain of oak. Not my favorite.  Its a personal thing.

No problems, Josh.

Everyone has different tastes. I just happen to like oak, You liked the Cherry. Tyson likes Birch.

That's why Brian and his NEW cabinet maker will finish them anyway you like, for an additional fee :?

Steve Lefkowicz is preparing a review of the 626R/FST version ($1998pr with stock caps) for Positive Feedback.

I recommend baffled (or solid) stands with the 626R's to preserve their low bass.  As Paul Klipsch pointed out 30 years ago a cavity or open space under a speaker destroys its bass.  Puzzling that virtually all commercial speaker stands are of the open bass-destroying kind.  Users can remedy this fault by cutting a baffle the same width as the speaker (10 1/2") that has a height same as the distance from bottom of the speaker to the floor, and attach same to front of stand.  1/2" MDF or better works fine.  The improvement is amazing.

The 626R/FST is a hell of a system, properly mounted on a baffled stand.
Steve will fill you in with a more objective evaluation, but I'm enthused.

Can an MDF baffle readily be attached to a Sound Anchor stand?  If so, what is the best method for attachment?

Bryan, do you have any other methods for maximizing the sound of the 626R's?  I mentioned adding weight to the top, but that seemed to go no where.

BC has mentioned before that "skirts" will greater improve performance allowing bass waves to travel down the skirt to the floor.  This entails placing a MDF board (or other) as wide as the speaker in front of the stand.

Actually some of the best for the 626 are pedestals that are enclosed all the way around.

They are especially good if they have a "slant" to them for the bass wave to slide down.

Paul Klipsh made everything into a Horn.  That is simply what this is.

Corner loading subs turns the room's corner and walls into a big Horn.

This "beard" that Brian suggests is using the same princple of "channeling" the larger sound waves to your listening position.

I haven't tried weighing down a 626 but it might help.  So far I've been unable to get the cat to stay still long enough for a comparison.

The beard on the stand can be made of cardboard, if you just want to give the concept a try.

Brian,  Can the 626R's be placed effectively on top of the dedicated subs (or perhaps the smaller sub)?

Oh, yes.  The subs are the right height for the 626's in many applications.
You might want to place a damping sheet like Dynamat under the 626's, however.

Cool!  Does anyone out there have a pic they could post of the 626 on a sub?  I was leaning towards the RM 2's, but I've received some advice about going with the 626 R's.  They also might fit my room setup better.  I've also seen a post that refers to putting another 626R on top of a 626R upside down.  What's the best setup?  (Unfortunately, right now the RM 40's are just to tall).

Thanks,

John

Since we're on the subject of speaker placement for the 626R's, I noticed this speacker stand for small speakers awhile back.  It's the bedrock stand at the bottom of the page.

http://www.mapleshaderecords.com/tweaks/speakerstands.html

Small speakers placed pretty much on the floor?  Tilting up?  In theory, should these stands work well?
