Music for Cooking / Hummus
« on: 25 Aug 2009, 02:07 am »
I was just making some hummus and listening to some James Brown.  For some reason listening to soul and funk just seems right when I'm cooking.  What do you guys listen to when the culinary mood hits?

Edit:  Forgot - Anyone have any favorite hummus recipes?

For me, it all depends on what mood I'm in and what the meal is all about. I also like the funk, but electronica and jazz are always great. I also like the Talking Heads comment. More songs about buildings and food is my favorite Hedas album.  :thumb:

I like to make my own hummus. Wash a can of garbanzos in a colander, then add to the food processor along with:
a clove or so of garlic ( amount depends on your love for it.)
1/2 of a lemon's juice
a teaspoon of cumin
a couple tablespoons of tahini
about a 1/4 cup of good quality plain yogurt
a tablespoon of good quality extra-virgin olive oil
salt to taste
Pulse till blended and then adjust yogurt and lemon juice to get taste and texture right.

Thanks for the recipe.  I'll try it out next time around.

Here's the only hummus recipe I have:

1 1/2 cup dry garbanzos (soak overnight or boil 2 hours)
3-4 garlic cloves
1 1/2 t salt
Dash of tamari (soy sauce is ok to substitute)
Juice from 2 lemons
3/4 cup Tahini
1/4 cup minced fresh parsley
Black pepper to taste
Dash of Cayenne
1/4 cup minced union

I can't provide any thought on hummus, but when cooking (as in seriously, as in having people over) I like to put on something from Bach. It settles my mind and helps me focus.

No hummus here, not even sure what that is. Sounds like there might be a pill to cure it though. You should have that checked out.

My audio system is in the basement, so there is no access to my tunes in the kitchen. However, the TV is close by the kitchen so I have access to all the satellite music channels.
My first choice for music when cooking is the B.B. King Bluesville. Although occasionally I'll listen to the Latin jazz channel, or maybe the Jimmy Buffet Magaritaville channel.
