Hey fellow GASSERS, greetings.
I thought it would help local business if we could start a thread with a list and links to all of the companies, manufacturers, distributors, etc...of audio and home theater items that are located in STL.
If you fellas have your own company or know of one, please post in this thread. When the list is compiled I'll try to clean and organized it a bit.
I'm starting threads here and on AudioNervosa. That thread is >> HERE << (http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=2073.0).
Companies do not need to be added to both forums, whichever is your preference is fine. I'll keep the lists on both sites identical.
Thanks guys, feel free to post if I've forgotten anyone.
Bob

Eventually, my goal is to have a one stop shopping "white pages" of audio places in St. Louis. Which, I suppose, makes it only fair to include retail places that sell the music we love so much.
Good call on that one Mitsu.
I'd eventually like to have the list complete with addresses, phone numbers, emails, and websites. An easy place where the membership can go to find our "stuff", ya know.
So if anybody has any helpful information, please post as much as you can.
Bob

Jim brings up something too....If any of you would like to give a brief description of your company and the products and services you offer, those posts will stay in the thread permanently. Eventually, posts that don't have long term relevance will be deleted to keep things clean and neat.
Bob
EDIT: I did some pruning of posts not directly related to the topic. Oct 17 2011.

Sounds by Design - there's a cool article about them at stlmag.com/athome this month. They design/build/sell heirloom speakers, which is a new term to me.
Heil (in Fairview Heights, IL - HT design/installation)
Audio Nirvana
That old library on the Hill that sells LP's and vintage gear...can't remember the name of it.
There is a specialty wood supplier in Marissa, IL...for diy speaker build projects. About 40 minutes from downtown.
Boobtone Amplification is 15 minutes from downtown, in Collinsville, IL. They may only build custom cabinets for guitars & instruments, not sure. Across from Swing City Music recording studios.

Bump.
Are we missing anybody? Any changes need to be made?
This thread has been highly modified in the past two years, simply to keep it clean.
So "continuity" might be choppy and you may even remember posting here but it's gone.
Nothing but "the good stuff' type info will remain.

Do you want to add Music For Pleasure's PH# 314-961-5747
Strange some of the bigger stores have no contact info. I wonder if Best Sound is still open?
-
Well.....It's not entirely strange that there's no information for the bigger companies. The main reason they're left blank, is that they have no representation here giving me the contact information. And the second reason is that I'm too lazy to look up the info anyway.
But I did put that phone number in there though, thanks for that.

Our moderator Bob has asked me to update the information that I posted about a year ago about what Osage Audio Products does and how we do it. We serve the St. Louis metro area by conducting in-home equipment demonstrations and by delivering equipment and setting it up. We do this throughout most of the middle of the country.

I am personally available to answer questions and demonstrate equipment just about seven days a week from early morning until late evening. We also do demos here at times to fit most anyone's schedule.
Here are the lines we handle:
Electronics: E.A.R., KAB, Lejonklou, Unison Research, UNICO, Bel Canto Design, Grado, Sonneteer
Analog: Benz Micro, Ortofon, DB Systems, Clearaudio, Merrill-Williams, Unison Research, Lejonklou, Sutherland,

John Hillig of Musical Concepts is known for his mods to Hafler gear. Met him many years ago. I was blown away after listening to his fully modded Hafler DH101 pre & DH500 amp.

Dynaudio has come out with a new Focus line, I heard one of the models and it was very good, still Dyn but improved over the older Focus. If other haven't been there in a while MFP have added Bolder, Sim Audio, Octave Audio and Sonus Faber to the line up.

I auditioned an Octave AUdio int. amp. It is great stuff (but I am sticking with my SS Naim gear). I bought a Simaudio phono preamp from them. I'm very happy with it. I've heard the Sonus Faber speakers at MFP and don't think they stand up to Dynaudio.
-
How about a category/ list for equipment service in the area? Anybody here who can tell me what's up with my old Perreaux amp?
(Thanks!)

Let's add JML Audio 636-343-2020 for true audiophile sound in the auto. I've heard 3 systems done by them and each was stunning, way beyond what I think most have heard for audio in a vehicle. They sell and install Dynaudio auto speakers, Audison, high end car electronics from Italy, Kenwood and more. One of the most impressive things I heard by one of their systems is how the sound comes from in front of you, not at all like a typical car stereo, you can't tell where the speakers are, this is done by time alignment using processing very effectively. Their installs are very good and done as to take minimal room. One install was a Corvette convertible and the other an Audi, everything was just like it was made for the car.
-
I have Joshua's business card in my Rolodex here at work.
I've thought about adding his company to the list, but wasn't sure. I've been meaning to call him about it. He's a good guy from what (little) I know, and the (few) dealings I've had with him.
I'll add him though, since you brought him up.
Bob
-
I'll add another vote for JML. Very professional sound quality installs, totally difft than what I had when i was 16
Both of their show cars at last nights MFP event were excellent & understated. Supposedly some of those car amps cost upwards of $10K. :o

Hi Bob
I like this idea for a st louis hifi, audiophile company directory! I am writing in to help fill it out - the URL for Music for Pleasure is http://www.musicforpleasure.com, the contact is Dwayne Boyer, and email address mfp@musicforpleasure.com.
If you can update, thanks in advance!

Thank you Matt (and my appologies for taking so long to find your post). :duh:
I've updated the list.
One of these days....I'll find the info for all the companys and make a proper list. Right now, it's a bit bare.
Welcome to GAS Matt :thumb:

John also has Musical Designs which is his own hi fi gear. One of his tube preamps has an interesting twist that you can change the board out to achieve different sound quality. I believe it had choice of 4 different boards.
-
I believe Best Sound has closed their doors. I pass by every day, and for the past 3 or 4 weeks the store has been dark with no vehicles outside.
-
I called Best Sound the week after Xmas and some one answered, so I think they are still there. I was wondering where I could get some of those leather chairs that swivel they use in their listening room, the guy didn't know, so if any one of you might......

Interesting. . .everything's pitch black at 4:30PM when I go by.
-
Those chairs go back over 15 years ago to the good old Les Marcus days. I was told two days ago that the building was recently sold and that they are now operating from some place in the valley in Chesterfield. I haven't been able to confirm this however.
-
Hi, Tim. It's been real quiet at Best Sound since you left the place. I noticed the building is dark also, but the parking lot has been pretty empty for quite a while. Do you know who bought the building ?
Also, you need to add Aaron Waldbrandt, the local Meridian dealer, to the company list. His company is called Waldbrandt Technologies, 231 Millwell Dr., St. Louis, MO. 63043, (314) 627-0346. Email is: aaron@walbrandt.com.
His guys do gorgeous work in home theater, music room and home automation installation.

Just a "bump" for any STL guys that know of any updates I need to make to the list.
Also, if you have a company in STL, and want to be on the list, or already are but want changes made, let me know.

Hi guys forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I noticed the elephant missing from the room here is Alpha-Tech. I can only assume people here are not a fan for some reason. I've only heard good things about them. Is there a reason people here don't like A-T?
-
I've heard the name, but know nothing about them.
Please elaborate. STL has no haters, I'll add them. :thumb:

Mike can now be reached at stereotechnician@gmail.com. I'm sure he aligns tuners. I think he did one for me a long time ago.

Good afternoon fellow audiophiles. I'm new to this society page, and wanting to become a member in the St Louis area. Our newly developing company design and build affordable high-end speakers. Our first store demos are at Stereo Haven high-end audio. Charlie Schnyder, owner has become a good friend and recommended we join the local society. My brother Daryl Iossi and myself are retired engineers from a lifetime in aerospace and automation from southern California (former). We now live in Centralia, Illinois where we both design and build high-end speakers for home audio. First design is a 94-96dB sensitivity 3-way matching speaker. Sound is detailed and lively, with a disappearing into live like sound.
We'd love to have a group join us, if any are interested in a pair of new friends to join your group. In met a couple of your members at Music for Pleasure a couple year's ago. Dynaudio was displaying some interesting models during that evening festivities. Thanks, in advance..

Just figured I'd throw out another few names for the list of music shops since I didn't see a few on here.
Dead Wax Records
1959 Cherokee St, St. Louis, MO 63118
Only open Friday/Sat/Sundays 12-5. Small shop, but generally a very nice selection of mostly used vinyl.
Kismet Creative Center
3409 Iowa Avenue, St. Louis, MO, St. Louis, MO 63118
Just off Cherokee and down the street from Dead Wax. Another small shop, specialize in lesser known/obscure stuff, also lots of bric-a-brac and such, pipes and other paraphernalia for sale if that bothers you.
Music Record Shop
3224 Locust St #203, St. Louis, MO 63103
Midtown, second floor shop with new and used vinyl and CDs, mostly focused on new and reissued vinyl.
Planet Score Records
7421 Manchester Rd, St. Louis, MO 63143
Maplewood shop with a good selection of new and used vinyl and CDs. Lots of good stuff.
There's also a couple places in Collinsville, across the river.
Rich's Record Emporium
131 W Main St, Collinsville, IL 62234
Their vinyl selection is a bit limited to me, mostly classic rock when I've been there, but they also have a large room full of quality stereo gear.
Monster Vinyl
107 E Main St, Collinsville, IL 62234
Kitchy spot with a decent selection of vinyl at quite low prices along with a ton of horror memorabilia. All used stuff here.
Anyway, maybe everyone around here already knows about these, but I didn't see them listed.
-

Their vinyl selection is a bit limited to me, mostly classic rock when I've been there, but they also have a large room full of quality stereo gear.
They carry Marantz, Rogue, Hegel, PMC Triangle, a few other lines and some SET gear. Mark, who manages the store, used to run a stereo shop in Belleville, I think.
-
Speaking of Stereo Have, in Edwarsville, IL, have they been officially added to the list.
Charlie has some good things like Ayre, VTL, Leben and Aurender, to name a few. I'm not sure what all speakers he has. He also has Sugden.
He goes by appointment: 618-974-8895
