Title: The NFL Season 2018-2019
Post by: SteveFord on 9 Sep 2018, 10:54 pm
Who would have thought, the Ravens light up the scoreboard.
Instead of something interesting, I got to see the Mighty Browns battle the equally inept Steelers into a well deserved tie.

In other news, the Giants have chosen to lull the rest of the league into a false sense of security before they assume their rightful place on top of the heap (he says).

5th straight year for the Saints to lose the opener, yet again from the horrible play of the Defense. :duh:

Nonetheless, Go Saints!

Rodgers earned that big contract last night, any Packer fan has to be worried about the MRI today, he didn't look at all healthy.  He did benefit from a total breakdown in the Bears defense, but it didn't take anything away from his courageous performance.

In in other news, the World Champion Philadelphia Eagles open the season at 1-0!

Bragging is so gauche. Your Eagles have played in exactly half as many Super Bowls as cross state rival Steelers have actually won. Eagles are 1-2 overall while Steelers are 6-2. Even my lowly Broncos have been to 8 SBs and won 3.

Come back when you have something impressive to claim. Cheering and boasting immediately after a win is expected and honored but crowing about prowess on the basis of  a 1-3 record is silly. Twelve other teams are 1-0 after week 1 victories and 2 others are likely to be joining them tonight. It's important to keep context in mind.

New England and Denver have both lost 5 Super Bowls .... yet between them they have won 8. Let's just focus on week 2 if our team has already played week one.

I didn' watch any games, but I was encouraged when I visited NFL.com and there was no noticable politics on the page! Hopefully they've learned something.

I hope Rodgers and Mariota will be back soon.

Night game with packers/bears was best of the day.  I was expecting a packer blowout, but it took a great comeback for the pack to win.

Bears did fold, but they looked good.  Seems like they should be competitive this year.

Looking forward to watching Rams/Raiders game tonight.

In case you haven't noticed I'm also a Steeler fan, lived there for 35 years including all the Super Bowls in the 70's.  Maybe you ought to take your hate for the Eagles and shove it where the sun don't shine.  There have been about a dozen guys touting their teams on this page and you only call me out?  For one line?  I don't know who pissed in your cherrios today, but that attitude is neither appreciated nor warranted.

Raiders looked good for a half, or maybe it was just the Rams were rusty since anyone who actually plays didn't play in the preseason.

2nd half was more what I was expecting all along.  Game was late in the east coast, so guessing a lot of you didn't see the 2nd half.

I also don't know what happened to Derek Carr in the 2nd half, he really didn't look good.  A couple awful passes for interceptions, and gave up on plays way early.
Of course that's easy for me to say, I didn't to face Donald and Suh and the others.

Tommy2Tone,
You're asking the wrong guy.
I am a VERY casual fan and with an antenna I usually end up watching teams I don't have much of an interest in.

Agreed!

From the first play of the game they had my Iggles chasing them! The Bucs played strong on both sides of the ball.  It’s early and there are a lot of games to be played, but for now TB looks real good!

It's not every day a player goes into the locker room at half time, puts on his street clothes and retires.

I take it the Bills are probably not going to the Super Bowl this year.

Steelers have many issues!!!
Tied the f ing Browns week one.
Gave up 6 td’s to a QB starting his third game .
Defense gave up about 87 points last two home games.
Their pro bowl field goal kicker is off to a horrendous start,Punter no better, special teams suck, coaching staff sucks . Linebackers suck !  The whole d sucks !!! Can’t cover, can’t tackle
Big issues here!!!!
Bell is a hold out
A Brown is a big baby!! Wants traded after being targeted 17 times , and he threatened to break a reporters jaw.

I was pretty disturbed to see Green Bay get cheated out of a win once again by terrible officiating. Yes, I'm talking about the refs reversing a game winning interception because of the silly arbitrary call of roughing the passer on a very ordinary tackle.

I agree Doublej, but the rules the refs are being charged with enforcing are untenable.  The refs are now more important to the outcome of the game than any of the three regular facets of the game.  I understand the rules are to protect the health of the players, but it's not working well on the field.

I still remember this interview back in 1979 ( I'm 57 by the way :D)
Quarterback safety was an issue even back then. Steeler Jack Lambert has his own idea on the issue.

Speaking of quarterbacks wearing dresses, did you see that the Saints' Benjamin Watson said the League should just put flags on the QBs, or make it two-hand touch? He said this after the BS call on Clay Matthews, and he makes a compelling argument.

Before you just ignore the Saints guy, it should be noted that not only does he play offense, but is also the Vice President of the NFLPA. He's pretty much a clinch for the President position when he retires. 15 seasons, over 180 games, more than 500 catches, all with the Saints; a rare 'one-team' guy.

Hopefully he can have the flags made to look like a dress. :thumb:

I just don't have that enthusiasm this year with all of the politics put into the game by you know who.
This year I can care less about the game.
I will predict the Eagles have a not so good or bad season...via karma.
If a player in his heart has feelings about social injustice by all means take up a banner and wave it off the field where it would do some good. Go to Community centers, high schools and use TV to make your point but to take a knee during the national anthem is disrespectful no matter how you sugar coat it.
The men and woman who serve this country and risk their lives everyday are preserving your right TO disrespect the flag...Irony.
In countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, China and North Korea diesrespecting the flag would earn you a life in hard labor.
Now that is social injustice.
Sorry for the rant but I feel it had to be said.

Don't you fret, Bluemeanies. There is good coming from this.
Kapernick just signed a gazzillion dollar contract with Nike but don't think all that money is going into his pockets. No sir ree. Some of it is destined for the  Colin Kapernick Foundation which aims to " fight oppression of all kinds globally".
His first target will be the sweatshops in Asia that produce Nike shoes. Using child labor and paying workers
pennies while  promoting their $200 pair Air Jordans to inner city youth.

Not bad for a guy who sacrificed everything in something he believed in.

Like the manufactured connection between 9/11 and fire trucks, the playing of the national anthem at sporting events is a marketing measure to help keep us rabble in line. Defiance at their point of attack makes perfect sense. Furthermore, you are arguing for the suppression of free speech. Even though the knee is intended to bring attention to the wanton and sanctioned killing of black people for simply being in the wrong place at the time of unnecessary shooting, the media has chosen to make the gesture about patriotism.

No matter where you come down on this discussion, please keep in mind that we all have the right to express ourselves peacefully. Those who threaten to remove that right violently not only miss the point in their "patriotism" but violate the provisions of the FIRST AMENDMENT of our Constitution.

You have no enemies among the poor. The people who are trying to hurt you are the extremely wealthy who feel that they don't yet have enough. They make more money every day than you will in your lifetime yet they want to take more from you. Direct your energies toward them.

Please note that I very deliberately tried to remain apolitical in my wording. This is about how we think --- not how we vote.

Nobody is. There's a time and a place for it. People use sporting events as an escape from reality/politics for a couple of hours.
Fans are the customers of NFL teams. If I piss off a potential or current customer while on the job, how long would you think I'd continue to have that job. What I do on my own time is nobody's business.

Even though the knee is intended to bring attention to the wanton and sanctioned killing of black people for simply being in the wrong place at the time of unnecessary shooting,

Are you talking about Black on Black murders in Baltimore? Chicago? Detroit? insert any urban city here.

Both those clowns should be fined and suspended for crude and illicit behavior. Second offense earns a ban from the league. Wouldn't you expect a man in his 20s to have evolved beyond potty humor? These guys are supposed to be college graduates, yet they behave like second grade. They probably light each other's farts in the locker room. League parity, long a stated goal of the NFL, will occur when every team reaches the bottom. As usual, New York is ahead of the curve.

I only saw the 2nd half, with Mayfield playing.

I don't think there is any "may" in there, I would expect riots in Cleveland if he doesn't start next game.

It's only been what, 2 years since they last won?

As an aside, I expected very little out of this game, but it turned out to be entertaining.

Yeah, well, all this winning crap is tearing up my weekly pools.

It looks like the Patriots have finally hit the wall of sticking second and third rate receivers and running backs with Brady and expecting wins.  Gronk was double teamed every single play, no one else can catch a ball.  You can see why they signed Josh Gordon, they're very desperate.

In defeating arch-rival and Divisional foe Atlanta yesterday, Drew Brees broke Brett Favre's NFL record for the most career completions.

Brady might have the most rings, but Drew added this NFL Record to his growing list of records, which also includes the NFL's all-time leader in completion percentage (67.1%) and passing yards per game (283.4). Going into the game with Atlanta, Drew was already ranked among the top-five all-time passers in touchdowns (493), yards (71,127) and passer rating (97.0).
Congrats, Drew. You kick ass.

Go Saints!!!

You're just seeing the Steelers without Bell.  Conner is a great story and is doing his best, but without the triple threat of the Three B's the Steelers are a middle of the road team.  Brown is doubled nearly every play and there aren't a lot of other offensive options for Ben.  The defense hasn't been anything like a steel curtain for years now.  Ben has been a very good quarterback going to three Super Bowls and willing two of them, but he's very close to the end of his career and has never been able to put a mediocre team on his back and win, no one but Brady has ever done that anyway.  The vast majority of NFL teams would dump their starter in a heartbeat for Big Ben.

I was expecting to see some talk about Mahomes this morning?

First half, it looked like he was coming back to earth, but he showed up at the end of the game and pulled out a big win.
Keenum on the other hand, missed a wide open receiver just before the botched flea flicker, which cost Denver the game.

Now waiting for Nov 19th, Rams visit KC.

my comment was made relative to his performance in Sunday's game, regardless, his best days are behind him IMO, if he wins another SB then I'm proven wrong. I won't be losing any sleep over it ...........

Duh!!
He had one bad half. Wow!!
The team may suck around him.
Averaging 343 or so a game . Only two QB’s have more yards.
3 straight games over 300, threw for 452 against KC.

There are a lot of good QBs in the league now. Stafford on the Detroit Lions is who I'm used to watching and I wouldn't swap the two.

What's really cool is that, barring something unusual, Drew Brees will break the NFL all time passing-yards record this Monday night in front of a National audience, at home, against the Redskins.  :thumb:

Go Saints,

Me and the Family will be at that game!  We are super pumped and super happy for Drew.  I can't think of a more deserving person.

Mark Ingram will be back from suspension too, so it'll probably be pretty loud in the Dome that night!

Awesome!!  That's gonna' be great! Have a daiquiri for me.

And yes, it will be nice to have Ingram back, fresh legs and all. We just need the D to play like any average defense in the League.

Have a great time at the game!!!

Rams squeaked out the win, much closer than I expected, but Seattle is a tough place to win.
Seattle was obviously up for the game.
Rams offense didn't look as good as some other games, but still racked up a bunch of points and got the win

In LA, they showed the Packers/Lions game and the Charger/Raider game.  Raiders look pretty bad

Oh, and in the late game, don't understand why Cowboys punted in OT?

Good thing New Orleans Saints never read the pre-game stats. "Stats are for Losers" said Ron Lancaster

You see the Saints were trailing at half-time and Baltimore in their previous 6 games never gave up a second half touchdown.

That's why we play the game. :smoke:

Yes, and with the win, as quarterback Drew has now beat all 32 NFL teams, joining only Brett Favre and Payton Manning (Drew beat the Saints when he was still with San Diego). He also joined the NFL's version of Mount Rushmore, becoming the 4th quarterback ever to throw for 500 touchdowns.

Packers/Rams was a good one today.
It sure looked like the Rams were going to lose at the very end but nope, still undefeated.

In other news, New York has decided to force their teams to move to another state.
The lucky recipients are expected to be announced by week's end.

Was really worried about the Rams, luckily that Packer decided to try to run back the kickoff and handed the game to the Rams.

I wonder how many people cheered and how many groaned when Gurly sat down instead of scoring a touchdown at the end of the game?
I think that cost Vegas and the books a ton of money.

Rams Saints obviously the game to watch next week.  But Rams will need to play better than they did.  Although if you saw the crowd, it Packers had a home game in LA, what's with that??

I lived in Los Angeles for a decade and I have a theory on seeing so many Packers fans at the Rams game.  Having lived there for so long, its not a surprise to me.  LA is such a melting pot with so many people (Around 14million in the metro), it's hard to find much homogeny due to the extreme diversification.   And a lot of those people move to LA from other states from all over the country to bask in the SoCal sun.

I'm a saints/LSU fan, and we were able to find bars and groups of people that only watched Saints and LSU.  You could also find, Bears bars, Eagles bars, etc.  The Rams are still 'newish' to LA, plus they are competing for market share with the Los Angeles Chargers.  If the Rams weren't doing so good, it may have really looked like a Packers home game.  Rodgers is also immensely popular, and deservedly so.

Great victory for the Steelers today !
James Connor is tearing up the league !!! 165 yards from scrimmage.
Who was saying Big Ben is washed up a few weeks ago.

A record pace

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is on pace to set the NFL record for most passing yards in a season. Through eight games, Roethlisberger has thrown for 2,560 yards, a pace of 5,120. The NFL record for passing yards in a season is 5,084, set by Dan Marino in 1984.

In 2014, he threw for 2,380 in the first eight games and finished with 4,952 yards, his career best.

The Steelers put up 52 against Carolina!! This was a good , dangerous team coming in , with a top defensive unit .
Big Ben finished with 328 yards passing and five touchdowns. His passer rating was a perfect 158.3.

Grade: A+

He is far from washed up. His best game of the season. Only 3 missed passes I believe.

Last weeks I've saw a graphic showing division leaders and their quarterbacks, some have "over the hill" qb's and some have the young studs.

And in the beginning of the year the Steelers didn't look very good, they have really turned it around.
I think they should send Bell a nice present for all the money he is saving them.

Last year the Iggles were just incredibly impressive and this looks to be the year of the Aints.
They've got everything going at the moment.

Before they get too cocky they should take a look in the rear view mirror as my Giants have just won two (as in two) in a row.

Not the same team as last year in any department.  Losing a brilliant OC seems to be the key factor, Frank can game plan like no other.   Even before the injuries the offense was spotty, now amplified by running back and o-line being decimated.  Vaitai, the backup offensive tackle, is a sieve, one with a big hole in it.  I haven't seen an NFL lineman so inept at pass blocking in many, many years.  Wentz just can't be anything close to effective running for his life every play, and with no team going for the play fakes and the run part of RPOs nobody's open.  A huge fall for a super bowl team.

Color me impressed.  They flat out made the plays when they needed to and kept the Saints O-line running all night.  No excuses of course, just noting the Saints offense wasn't sharp with a lot of dropped passes and of course the killer interception.  One could assume it was Dallas throwing off their timing, but Brees was off.

Sounds like Sean Lee may be back.
But what do you do with him? Replace a rookie that is tied for the most tackles in the NFL? ... even though he has only played part of the season and is looking like D Rookie of the Year?
Sean Lee is one of the best at his position, but this kid Van der Esch is looking like a generational defensive talent.  And the Jaylon Smith experiment (bad knee/nerve damage) seems to be working out.  Suddenly, Dallas has some serious chops at LB.

Gave up watching the NFL soap opera this season, except for the Rams/Chiefs game.  Nearly everyone in the league is over paid and spoiled rotten.  Players are over paid and so many are drug using thugs who haven't had anyone tell them "NO" since grade school.  Owners are out of control billionaires who are above the law (don't pay federal income taxes and hire felons to entertain us).  Too many official reviews, it's just a game folks, not a legal proceeding.  Too much commentary.  Games are too slow.  Too many commercials.

I prefer college football, but even that suffers from most of the NFL's flaws.  Better yet is Canadian football.  Player salaries are a small fraction of the NFL.  Less showboating in the end zone.  They actually cut commercials short to get back to the game and can finish in less than 3 hours.

For anyone who hasn't been paying attention, the Denver Broncos have actually re-entered the playoff picture with consecutive wins over the Chargers, Steelers, and Bengals. Three of their last 4 games are against weak teams in the 49ers, Browns and Raiders. The final game is against the Chargers once again but this time in Denver. Of course, you have to keep in mind that they can revert to the team with a string of unexplainable losses at any moment.

Things seem to have quieted down in Pennsylvania recently but I expect Texas to pick up the slack about now. Dallas chose to wake up just in time to see a pointless surge by the schizophrenic Giants, loss of starting QB in Washington, and reality in Philly. Fun times.
Oh, and Houston has now won 9 in a row, including what would be a head to head tie breaker over Denver. Baltimore has that too. KC will win our division and the Chargers appear to have a lock on the #5 AFC seed. That last playoff spot will be hotly contested. Indy, Miami and Tennessee are also possible contenders for #6.

My old high school physics student, Colt  McCoy, can't catch a break with the Redskins.  Finally got his chance to start last week, and tonight completed 4 in a row against the Eagles when he broke his fibula.   That's the second Redskin QB in 3 weeks to break a leg.  Not a Redskin fan, but that's just rotten luck for any team.

The new QB protection rules may require a rewrite at the end of this season. Seems like an unusually high casualty rate this year after they started the season wrapping QBs in cotton and fining guys for falling on them or touching their ankles.

Colt McCoy and Case Keenum seem like they might be stars if their teams could figure out how to protect them better.

I agree that the celebrations are infantile, but the league has decided that viewers younger that the  "Get Off My Lawn" crowd must like it.
And as far a s high salaries, I don't begrudge any worker getting as much as his talent will let him wring from management.
I don't watch near as much football as I used to, but partly because I've got other things to do, and partly from the realization that the game is beyond brutal.  The loss of mental acuity is a high price to pay for the millions of dollars they make in their short careers.

There is the simplest of solutions for NFL snowflakes, DVR.  With a recorded game you can fast forward through all the commercials, celebrations, replays, cuts to the owner's box and live a happy life.  One wonders why you post on this thread if the whole thing upsets you so.  Are you looking for recruits?

As an Eagles fan I felt terrible for Colt McCoy, by all accounts one of the good guys who finally had a chance with a good team.

So glad somebody else sees that the games are scripted (loosely) and that the entire thing is about entertainment with sport just being the reason we all showed up. The NFL, like any other cynical, greedy corporation, is all about maximizing the cash flow. If demographic studies indicate that touchdowns sell more beer, there will be more touchdowns. These products are manipulated like any other corporate product --- Profits over people at the expense of anything else that might be impacted. Your groceries get the same treatment. So does your air and water. No wonder we insist on having control over our music.
Title: Re: The NFL Season 2018-2019
Post by: S Clark on 10 Dec 2018, 11:37 pm
The obvious explanation is that the first time the Eagles played the Cowboys, there were NO penalties on the Eagles...none,  in spite of multiple tackles of Dallas defensive linemen.  So to screw things up equally...
I'm not a conspiracy type personality, but I am a huge believer in incompetence.  Ref's have been told to look the other way in the case of holding on the line, otherwise the games would never end.

Because that's the way the rule is written: they have to be able to see which individual "player" recovered the ball. Since the camera angle didn't show that, the ruling on the field stands. Stupid, but that's the way the rule is written.

On the other hand, the Eagles were largely dominated and outplayed on both sides of the ball and didn't deserve a victory against a clearly better team.  Sorry, but that's how I saw it.

thanks fro the explanation firedog, again showing how stupid these morons really are for when a fumble is recovered the ref never calls out the individual, rather the 'team' ! I suspect these rules were written by a collective group of brain dead lawyers ...............

Okay, we are coming down to the playoffs. I try to watch each team at least once to evaluate their chance at getting to the Super Bowl. Mind you, I'm not an expert as some of you, but I see no clear favorite. New England's two recent losses prove they can be beat, but certainly can't count 'em out. Other teams like the Steelers are battling hard to make the playoffs and coming on strong. It's good to see Chicago have a contender, think their running back is really good. Without him they won't win.

So there you have it, IMO the Super Bowl is up for grabs which should make for very exciting playoffs. However the best games to watch maybe the next two weeks. I find playoff football can be a let down compared to regular season games with teams battling to make the cut.

Nope never saw the picture of Long's locker...Hey, whatever works for him!

Everyone is fine with Foles and realize the position we are in. The defense had a huge impact in the Rams game which helped to open up the offense some. Not too many questioning the decision made to bring back Wentz.

No, not losing faith in Wentz, but I always felt he was brought back too soon. The biology on his surgery is 18 months for full healing.  With proper conditioning and rehab yes he could play sooner but you can't force that which takes time to heal. There were some moments of the electric Wentz but only moments nothing steady. His numbers were actually on par with last years but the wins just didn't come. Mostly due to multiple injuries on both sides of the ball.

It's been an interesting year and we have a chance at making the playoffs but I doubt it! The Eagles have to win out and need help from the Cowboys. The schedule is on the Boys' favor and my guys will most likely be making an early exit.

Chris

I'm not mad either and I hope twitch and all of our members have a wonderful 2019.

But since it's brought up and it's the season, let's address Santa Claus and hopefully put it to bed.  He deserved to have snowballs thrown at him.  The scheduled Santa cancelled at the last minute and they grabbed what appeared to be a drunk off the street.  He was horrible and disrespectful to the fans, who, having a large supply of snow, made snowballs.

Dave Parker had one battery from one person in the stands thrown at him.  In Pittsburgh he had numerous batteries and other objects thrown at him because of his demand to be traded.  So it's very likely it was a Pittsburgh fan throwing the battery at Parker in philly.  Regardless it was all reprehensible.

For Philly fans in general yes, they are a passionate group.  But as the city has become more metropolitan and less parochial so has the fan base.  The price of seat licenses and ticket prices have risen to the point that most of the rif raf has been driven out and they're not much different than any fans in any city.  BTW, 31 years living and working here so far.

Great game!  Karma at the end with the Eagles getting ripped off of the 2 point conversion, and then a lucky break to win.  They were underdogs last year for every playoff game, but they were at home with one less game.  It would be very unlikely the get thru both divisional and championship games, but fans will enjoy the ride not being knocked out in the first round.

They actually did cover this in the broadcast, and noted as this article does it was such a slight touch it's unknown if it deflected the ball at all.   Being that the kick had plenty of distance my thought is not much if at all.  However, since it missed by the tiniest of margins and could have fallen thru the uprights in either of the doinks, maybe it did affect the ball enough.

I heard on the radio today that since the Bears let go of Robbie Gould three years ago he's only missed 3 FG's in that time and all the kickers they've had to replace him have missed 19.

The Saints aren't unbeatable.  Dallas did it, and it wasn't a fluke.  But then Dallas beat Philly also.  Twice.  So you can't say that was a fluke either.  Don't think anyone is especially afraid of the Eagles.  But it's also true that any team still at the dance could go all the way.  Personally, I like the Chargers this year.

The Saints may have beaten Philly last year but for the Minnesota Miracle.  Haven't seen the spread but one assumes they're a heavy underdog.  They did a good job sneaking into the playoffs and getting past the first round after one of the worst seasons a reigning Superbowl champ has had in years.  Most Eagles fans will be satisfied with the progress so far.
The Colts and Chargers are the hot teams, but Superbowl quality defenses have a way of shutting down hot teams.  That said the Patriots look very beatable.  On the NFC I think the Cowboys have the best chance to upset this week.

The cool 'back-story' for the Saints-Eagles game is that Drew Brees and Nick Foles are both graduates of Westlake High School in Austin, TX.

Drew led Westlake to their only State Championship in 1996. Foles led the team to the Championship in 2006, but didn't win. Ultimately, though, Nick broke Drew's high school records for both passing yards and touchdowns.

Go Saints!!

Not much of a game in KC !!
31-13
KC defense was Chicago Bears good , for a defensive team known to be one of the worst in the league.
Luck seemed all out of sorts , getting every other pass blocked, getting knocked down, sacked , stripped, dropped passes , etc...
I hope the cowboys game is more competitive.

I hope the Beagles/Aints game isn't anything like the Cheaters and the Chargers.
I watched one of the Chargers blow a tackle, just give totally up and then when his other team mates came into the screen he decided to maybe try and get in on the action but nothing too strenuous.
Luckily, I drifted off into a well deserved power nap about 5 seconds afterwards.

I remember that game, too, except I was rooting for my hometown Patriots, who got thoroughly stomped 51-10.   They were still the Boston Patriots in those days (name changed in 1971), and were mostly mediocre until Belichick and Brady came along.  Even though Belichick may be the best NFL coach ever, I half expect them to go back to being mediocre whenever Brady finally retires.

Absolutely the worst non call I've ever seen.  New Orleans was going to complete that pass for a touchdown and win the game and it was more than interference, he tackled the receiver, blatantly, in full view of the officials.  It wasn't even close.  I have no dog in the fight, but a shame to see Brees screwed out of a superbowl appearance two years in a row.

Post by: Rusty Jefferson on 21 Jan 2019, 02:54 pm
First off, nobody got robbed.  There are blatant penalties (holding mostly) on every single down of an NFL game that could decide the outcome if they were properly called.  It's unfortunate that particular call wasn't made because of the isolation of the players. I think it wasn't called (in real time) because the pass was 6ft short of the receiver, and the ref wasn't going to give one team a win at the end of regulation in the Championship game on a "let's take a shot for a TD or maybe get the penalty play" on 3rd and long, knowing they would kick the FG if it didn't work out. No referee is calling Lebron for his 5 step crab walk travel going to the rim late in a game.  It's a TV show.

I'm a fan of the game, not a team. Those were 2 good games that could have gone either way if not for a single bizarre play or two in each, and better officiating.  I don't look forward to the day that AI controls sporting events.

I don't mean to offend, but I couldn't disagree with you more on this one Rusty.  I agree completely about not calling PI when a prayer is thrown up in the last seconds of a game, that's not even close to what happened here.  The receiver was about to catch the ball, he had the defender beat and the ball was right there, a very well thrown pass.  And there was a helmet hit on a defenseless player, a rule I hate, but understand the player safety issue.  The league admitted it was a blown call and everyone else on the planet sees it as an egregious non call that robbed the Saints of the victory.   Of course congrats to the Rams for taking advantage of their lucky break, the game wasn't handed to them at that point, but it was stolen from the Saints.  I'll note once again I could care less who won, not a dime on the game.
Title: Re: The NFL Season 2018-2019
Post by: mcgsxr on 21 Jan 2019, 03:23 pm
A tough no call in the NFL for sure.

I can see both sides of this.  From the right angle it does appear that the ball was not going to get to a spot the receiver could catch it.  But from most other angles it appears to have been blatant, and would likely normally be called.

Sad for Saints fans to be sure.

An interesting opportunity for the Rams, though I don't see them beating the Pats for the prize.

Very embarrassing the way these modern refs don't even seem to feel the need to conceal their cheating. What the hell matters more - deliberate manipulation of the outcome via reffing decisions or somebody perhaps tinkering with ball inflation? No question about which will be taken seriously.
The Pats may not stand a chance in the big game 2 weeks from now if the NFL is intent enough ( they looked it in the Saints travesty) to reward the Rams for moving to L.A. Expect them to try turning Jon Gruden into Bill Belichick over the next few seasons.

Understand the Patriot fatigue but one thing that is certain is they always make for a great SB. Always goes down to the last few minutes to decide the winner when they’re playing in the big game.

At work I got in a pool for picking the score and mvp and submitted Rams-31 Patriots-27 with Aaron Donald as mvp. Then saw this yesterday hoping my prediction comes true. It seems they get it right every other year so they’re due this year...

Just hoping for another great game.

Agree that this was one of the best superbowls I've ever watched.  Great discipline, great coaching, few random referee calls screwing things up.  Just hard nose football.  As an old Dallas fan, I begrudgingly gave Lombardi credit for his dynasty when my team was just as good, I have to give Belichick credit for his dynasty.  The man's teams are well oiled machines that play so well together.  He may well be the best ever.

to each his own, best Super Bowl ever, not by a long shot, IMO.

as for the ESPN article, 'their dynasty the greatest in American sports', oh I think Yankee fans might have something to say about that !

The Rams D played a great game holding the Pats offense to an anemic one touchdown.  But their offense was horrible, the o line had Goff running the whole game, I don't think the left tackle or right guard blocked anybody the whole game.  It turned our not making a difference in the game as the Pats didn't score on the drive, but the targeting a defenseless player on the Rams early in the game on third and long was the most egregious call I've seen in years.  The defensive player made a form tackle wrapping up the receiver on a screen play keeping his head up and their face masks touched.  Stupid, stupid call that the announcers glossed over.  The refs did a better job the rest of the game, but that one could have changed the whole game.

Obviously the refs were trying to make up for killing the Saints's chances to get to the SuperBowl!  :green:

That was my first thought when it happened because I believe the Rams player that was flagged on that play was the same guy who got away with the pass interference in the NFC championship. So in one game the refs let it go on an obvious penalty and the next game they throw a flag for a textbook tackle.

I think the refs should appear before the media after any game and say what they saw or what they thought they saw and explain their call.

I saw something on the web the other day, it was a Welcome to Louisiana sign and underneath it was added another sign that said Except for Roger Goodell!
