AMP & Speaker switch
« on: 20 Feb 2020, 08:41 pm »
Running my nx-oticas on both my chip amp and my tube amp.
Just thought I would ask the circle if anyone has run across a switch with good electronics so I can switch my speakers from chip to tube amp without having to manually hook everything up each time.
Know there are a bunch of amp/speaker switches available on amazon, but I'm looking for something that is not junk with high quality switches and wire..
Second goal is to make it easy for the wife to switch from tube to chip if I'm not home.

Open to recommendations.

Thanks

Depends on the tube amp design.  Most tube amps need an output load at all times to not destroy the output tubes.

Putting a switch there would effectively unload the output transformer and not be good.

Exactly why I asked the question here, thanks.
It’s a elekit tu-8600.
Sounds like I might need to dedicate the nx-oticas to the tube amp.
Not a bad thing..  :D

The instruction manual or amp rear panel should state if it can be used unloaded.  Most cannot.

Also, do not switch the output load impedance switch with the amp running.

I don't understand - turning the tube amp on just requires flipping a switch, which seems like it would be just as easy as flipping a switch to change amps.

So it sounds like the tube amp must be off if any changes made, either manually or using a switch.. Sounds like a good rule of thumb..

That’s a good rule of thumb with any amp.
