New drivers in 2007 opening up new designs?
« on: 1 Jan 2007, 09:22 pm »

On another forum you commented that there were some interesting new drivers coming available in '07.

Anything you can comment on?

I'm particularly interested in the idea of larger open baffle designs, maybe even a line array.

At this point I don't have any specific ideas but there are some new drivers coming out that may be interesting. I really like the smaller AuraSound drivers (3"-4") and they would make for a nice narrow array with a subwoofer.

I bet they'd make for quite an expensive array. I'm also sure they'd sound amazing given the quality of their subs. A couple of their subs sealed and strategically placed in the room and a line array of their small drivers and the Founteks would be pretty nice :).

A very rough guess at the differential in cost for an array of those?  $1000 or $4,000?

Actually the drivers are not that expensive and have a high performance to cost ratio.

It all depends on how many drivers you want per side. It may be less than you think.

what do you think about using some of their 2"-3" drivers with the founteks in an mtm style similar to that of McIntosh?  You would still be able to keep the horizontal spacing between 5-7" and the vertical would be much less.

If I were to do that I probably would use the 3" drivers because of the bass extension needed to cross over to the subwoofer.

Only thing worst than not thinking at all, are those times when we are inclined to think too small. An all out assault on creating the best seems to be the right approach to electronics product design. The draw-back with this is, you may create something only a few can afford. The race will certainly tighten if Brian can come close to the sound of the Mc's. Decisions, decisions.

If you're talking about the VMPS V-60 you're comparing apples to oranges. The V-60 is a point source speaker and not anything close to a line array.
