Title: In case I miss, or lose you in the shuffle.
Post by: Outofthewoods on 12 Feb 2014, 06:41 pm
Hello everyone,

Since returning to AC I've been getting a lot of inquiries. I'm trying my hardest to keep up and not forget, or miss anyone in the process. If I do slip up please feel free to nudge me here in this thread. I do ask that you give me a couple of days to respond before doing so.

Thanks!

Ruben

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to edit/post/send pics with the new Chromebook.

We leave for church in about 30 min, so if I don't post them before we head out I will get them up later this evening. I've got pics of the 9's and LS-C (Rob), the Super 7 lookalike Super V parts (Greg), (6) piano black subs (Brian) and single leatherette sub.

Best,

Ruben

PICS!!!

I should have everything sprayed by next week. I just need to finish building the LS-C stand before I start. A few of the subs have some light specks in the clear , so they'll be getting refinished as well.

The LS build will be finished just like this sub. Black leatherette with piano black accents.

The Super V side panels will be finished in a metallic piano black like this LS-C.

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z387/Outofthewoods/MBLS-C4.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/Outofthewoods/media/MBLS-C4.jpg.html)

The subs will be paired with Gedlee Abbeys. The dual 8's are built to match the footprint of the Abbeys.

The work looks very very nice.  If that Abbey is planning on staying on top of the sub...tell the owner to not show Dr. Geddes.  Since that totally defeats the purpose of what he aims for he will not like his answer as an excited customer.   ;)

It doesn't look like East Indian or South American (Santos) Rosewood. Bolivian maybe?

It's South American Rosewood. Color might be off due to camera and or monitor settings?

Hey Ruben,

Talk about differences in wood. South American Rosewood is what I used on the N3's that are in my avatar and my N3 build thread. Your veneer and mine look like two entirely different species.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get your veneer from? Mine came from Oakwood Veneer Company.

The owner was out backpacking part of the Colorado Trail when you posted and missed it until now, but the owner is well aware... and so is Earl.  :)

At the risk of distracting from the purpose of the thread...

First, note that the subwoofer in the picture of the Abbey is not associated with the Abbey in any way.  The separate picture of the 6 black subwoofers includes the 2 subwoofers intended to act as "stands" for the Abbeys.  They (should) match the footprint of the Abbey exactly, including the radiused front vertical edges, and each has two 8" Rythmik drivers mounted opposite of each other so that mechanical driver forces cancel.  Side-firing is not my usual first choice, but that configuration fell out of the footprint, volume and force cancelling requirements.

I discussed this concept with Earl from the beginning and specifically ordered the Abbey kit without the bottom edge of the baffle radiused so-as to better physically (and to a lesser extent, acoustically) integrate with the subs.  I discussed it again when working out the subwoofer cabinet volumes and their impact on the height of the Abbeys relative to my ear. The 8" subs are a little short relative to the height needed to ideally align the Abbeys with the listener's ear, but this will be addressed by using adjustable spikes to tilt the stack slightly.  To quote Earl: "[That] may actually be the better way to do it."

The 12" Rythmik single driver subs will be distributed as needed to address room modes.  (With 4 of these in addition to the 8" subs, I'm hoping that I can comfortably steal as least one from the main system to use in the office system.)

And any excitement that I may once have had has long since worn off.  That happens when you've been waiting for well over 3 years for your product to be delivered.  Anyone that has touched any part of this speaker system has suffered an absolutely mind-boggling array of delays.  I'm sure the product will be impressive in the end, but I can't imagine I'll be impressed enough to easily forget the endless frustrations.

Speaking of which... Ruben, I have yet to receive any responses to my emails dating back as far as July 25th.  An update would be appreciated.

Very nice!  Great to see such fine speaker cabinets for DIY applications.

Looks like the Abbey stands will be put to good use after all.  Very good!  It might have taken me a year to finish assembling six identical speaker crossovers, each one only first order electrical HP/LP + a 3-piece Zobel network.  One delay was to check audible polarity of every capacitor, even tiny trim caps...plus trimming cap values to the 2nd decimal was exasperating.  We feel your DIY pain.

Not the best pic, but gives an idea of how they'll look when done. Stand still needs some finish work. The base plate and outer column faces will be piano black to match the speakers. (they're primed now) The outer columns will also get piano black caps to finish them off.

The stand as pictured is set at 34" to the bottom of the center. There is approx. 7" up/down adjustment from there.

Ruben,

How about some good news?  Room has been done and lonely for a few months now.  Sure would sound better with some speakers .  Especially those stellar examples shown above  :green:

Also,
above you said : "...The outer columns will also get piano black caps to finish them off."  Are these caps something already made which you ordered or did you make them too?  What sort of material are they?  Just curious.

Ruben, I've sent you a PM, an email and tried multiple times to call you over the last several days, but I can't even leave a voice mail since your mailbox is full.

What is the status of my speakers and subs?  Unless you deliver this weekend, this will be the second year in a row that I have to explain to my friends visiting for RMAF that I'm still waiting for my speakers...

Wait, WUT ?  :o

Ruben,
I have faith that you'll be able to deliver, but I can't wait that long.  I feel I have been patient and understanding of the circumstances which have popped up during the time you have been building my speakers.  My room has been finished for months now and I was expecting the speakers in July.  From your last pic, they look to be mostly finished.  I too have left voice messages with no return calls and after seeing the above comment am very worried.

Please respond with some good news (like a tracking number  :green:  )!!!!!  I'm still holding on to the faith thing!

Hey Guys,

Rob - I have to get Brian's stuff out of here right away. I thought I'd be able to deliver his stuff this weekend, but that's not going to happen. I'm a couple weeks away from shipping your stuff. Don't worry, Brian's case is unique and you'll be listening to your speakers real soon.

wshuff - I will have a tracking number for you tomorrow.

Greg - Yours will ship after Robs. I am assembling them free of charge. All you'll need to do is in install the kit and your done.

I don't want to get into specifics on what's been going on in my life these past couple of months, but I've been going through it. I've been doing my best to maintain and am very embarrassed and ashamed to be in this situation with work. Never been in this predicament before and it's tough for me to deal with. I'm really sorry for any frustration and anxiety that I've caused.

I'd like to offer you guys (Greg, Rob) something extra for your trouble and was thinking that maybe a pair of X-LS Encore's would be a nice little gesture. Whatcha think? They would ship after your orders as to not cause any more delay.

Best,

Ruben

Ruben, please contact me directly.  These vague, incomplete forum posts do not answer the specific questions that I've asked you multiple times over multiple months via multiple communication paths.  I still want to know when, precisely, I can expect delivery and what issues remain.

I agree with others in that you're a good guy with good intentions, and the quality of your work and perfectionism do you significant credit, but, to speak plainly, that's only part of the equation if you mean to operate a customer facing business.  As I've mentioned previously, even the most basic direct communication would go a long way in alleviating the significant and well justified frustration among your customers.  I, and others, will usually happily cut you some level of slack in the face of personal trials if you at least communicate.  And in my case, the last thing we need is for you to have to rework something on my speakers yet again because you didn't ask or answer a particular question.  Clear communication (and detailed documentation of all discussions for future reference) protects you as much as your customers.

I've never felt it appropriate to express concerns or frustrations publicly (as you well know, given what I've told you about my last set of speakers from another manufacturer), but your insistence on using this communications medium can't help but expose some small part of it during customer attempts to obtain any amount of information.  Let's please have an actual conversation and get the issues addressed, with a clear path forward and firm commitments.  At the very least, please answer the questions that I've sent you repeatedly via email.  I know you want this effort completed every bit as much as I.

Thank you.

Has anyone heard anything from Ruben?

I sent a PM and an email (on the 11th) letting Ruben know I have family coming up the weekend of the 25th to visit and see our new home.  I haven't heard anything back yet.  Of course, everyone keeps asking if the home theater I worked on for a year is finished.  I tell them sort-a.  Still waiting on the main speakers, but everything else is finished.

It would be great if the speakers came in before that (as promised above) so I could have time to set them up and calibrate the audio.  They looked so close to being finished in the last pic he posted.

Fingers crossed !!  :D

Did you happen to see a set of LS9's and an LSC ?   :D  And did they seem ready to ship?   :D :D

I didn't visit the shop or see anything. After the surprise visit he agreed to have the cabinets ready for pick up the next morning. And he had them ready and waiting on the porch when I got there.

If you need anything done (like a crossover built), he can send it over to us (we are about 45 mins north) and we can store it for you for a bit if needed.

When Ruben builds a speaker (like my LS9/LSC) and he gets the component kits from Danny, does he put them together himself, or does he farm that out to you or none of the above?  :?

Seems the "red flags" are out here for everyone. Danny having to make a "surprise" visit, is fair warning and a good indication of a poor business arrangement. Like every good marriage, communication is everything.
Hey Danny, thought you weren't going to RMAF ?

While we do occasionally build LS9's and their crossovers for our customers, Ruben builds his own stuff.

Sean built out one center speaker for me a few years ago and he assembled my networks before I knew what I was doing.

I've been storing that pair of Super 7's for maybe 8 months, now. He has been trying to make the drive but car trouble held him up. He tried calling to let me know he was coming by but my machine was not picking up and all calls were going to a voice mail box that I don't even know how to access. The problem has been addressed and I can now receive messages on my machine again.

Thanks,

Ruben

I'm going to be making changes to ensure that I never run into this situation again. When I came back to the forum I was slammed with inquiries and lined up a good 6-8 months worth of work. Things were getting done and shipping as planned until I had several personal issues derail my schedule big time. I'm back in the shop full time again and will be back on track soon. This will be the only thread you'll ever read about me and my service in this light.

Ruben,

Sounds like you have had some things to deal with in your personal life. Wishing you all the best going forward. I feel compelled to say to others on this forum that my experiences/dealings with Ruben have always been the best. Having purchased N3TL and OB5 enclosures from Ruben in the past couple years, the results were nothing but outstanding. Not just the product Ruben produces and delivers but also dealing with Ruben The man. I have never met him in person but I know in my heart that he is a good man. Anyway, just wanted to put that out there...

Regards,
Wayne

Hi Ruben!

Got you email regarding the arduous process for getting Piano Black looking good and that it would be another 2 weeks minimum before you could ship anything.  You mentioned "...Satin lacquer can be repaired and shipped same day. Makes things MUCH easier!" to which I replied and left a voice message saying "let's go with the Satin Black to speed up delivery".

I'm posting here too and will send a PM so that I cover all my bases in getting this request to you.  Make it Satin and save yourself and me the time!  Waiting another 2 weeks minimum kinda sets the stage for a possible delivery in December....

Thanks Ruben,
Rob

Ruben, we talked about this - don't give me an estimate unless you can follow through.  Repeated failure to meet estimates of any kind does nothing but aggravate customers.  At the same time, not communicating because of a fear of delivering bad news doesn't work either.  Best bet is to say what has been done and what's left to do.

I still don't have pictures, your new email address, or a status, much less the actual subs.  What is happening?

Ruben, where's my speakers?

It really stinks to have to start a new year off on a sour note but why would you tell someone you are shipping that night and give details as to why so late in the evening, who was helping you, etc. and then go silent (again)?  I am really baffled by this behavior.  This forum isn't a place just anyone hangs out on.  The members here are all enthusiast and carry a certain amount of respect (obviously you included).

I'm simply baffled.

It would be great if I could have these before the end of 2014!  :)

Looking back through this thread is a time-capsule of one disappointment after the other.

I left you a message today.  I have no other means of contacting you besides PM's, emails, forum post and the phone number you provide to call anytime.

Hi Rob,

Sorry for the wait. We took a trip to Taos to visit family which was suppose to be from Monday till Wednesday, but the trip was unexpectedly extended and we ended up getting back Friday evening.

You've got some VERY heavy crates headed your way. I'm sending your tracking info you via PM right now.

Best,

Ruben

Here's a little taste, Rob.

Of all the speakers I've built thus far, these are my wife's favorites. Black leatherette with satin black lacquer.

They look MUCH better in person.

Best,

Ruben

Ruben,

I replied to each of your emails regarding the delays getting the LSC/stand to YRC.  At first it was going to be Thur night then Friday, then Sat afternoon.  I haven't heard back since then.  Were you able to get them dropped off?  Your last email from Saturday said they were loaded up.

Nope.

No response to email.  No answer on phone, nor is the voicemail set up.  Hasn't been on AC since 8/25.  If anyone has a lead, it would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Ruben, be aware that the voicemail feature on your line is active, but not set up, so no one can leave a message.  It hangs up as soon as you try, so if you're hoping a downstream answering machine will record the messages, no one can get to it.

Does anyone have contact information for Ruben?

I have prepaid him for a center channel speaker and following that he has disappeared from the earth.  He responded a month ago saying he had Internet/computer/phone problems and that I would receive my speaker the following week.

I've purchased with him before and while the time was longer than he had said, he generally stayed in contact.  He is not responding to any emails or PM's.  I hate to make assumptions regarding anyone's character, but at this point it looks like he's already spent my money and I won't be getting anything in return.

So much for trusting members of this community.

Roscoe (and others),

It pains me to see this happen to you.

Something like a year ago (more?) there was a similar disappearance by Ruben. He finally returned and I believe he made good on all the orders that had been made/paid for. Very soon after he reappeared, I sent him an email about his MIA status and how it must affect his business. I did not accuse him of wrong doing or such, but I offered compassion and my curiosity over what had happened to him.

He told me something had happened in his life that had taken control of his time and energy. (My wording - not his) He was remorseful that this had occurred and that he would make everything right. Now, he never did tell me what had happened and I did not pry, but I imagined some horrible possibilities (wife? son? daughter? Death/catastrophic illness).... I don't know. If 'it' has happened to him again, I hope he is able to deal with it.

I hope everything works out for everyone.

In now following this thread - which has been open for the past year and a half - Ruben has been behind the entire time.  He has been promising delivery dates he can't fulfill and over the entire time has offered a number of excuses why he cannot deliver.  That is, when he actually bothers to respond.

So far, the responses fall into several categories:

1.  Awaiting parts from Danny.
2.  Personal life issues.
3.  Phone problems.
4.  Computer problems.
5.  Internet problems.
6.  Phone, computer, AND Internet problems.

The last time we spoke via email, he said he was without phone or Internet for three weeks and that my speaker would ship within the week.  He then stated that he was "switching phone/Internet providers next week" and implied I wouldn't hear back from him.

This is a person who should not be taking peoples' money if he cannot assure them that they will not ripped off.  His situation has not gotten better, in fact it has gotten worse.

Roscoe,

I feel your pain.

Hopefully everything works out for you and you get what you paid for.

It all looks like Ruben is going through a rough patch but I still have faith in him. He really seems like a good guy at heart.

In my case, I prepaid 70% so about 4300-4400$ for a pair of Super-Vs similar to Gregfisk's but in pearl white as well as a pair of Lucid White speakers in glossy green. That included parts he was going to order from Danny and I also shipped a pair of P-Audio drivers his way along with assembled crossovers. The Lucid White parts and flat pack were also shipped to him and I even bought 2 spare p-audio drivers on top of that.
It was my first time spending over 2000$ for audio equipment...

The first time they were officially supposed to ship was on January 2015, but I sent him the money way before that. 'Everything is going to be alright, everything is going to be alright' I keep repeating myself...

If ever anyone hears from Ruben, please let us know.  (Last time I did was September 26th)

David

The phone number that I have for him is now disconnected (since my post on 9/16), though the voicemail never worked anyway.  The last response that I had from him was via email on 7/28.

And trust me, I've been waiting longer than anyone else on this thread.

I feel very badly about this whole thing as I truly believe Ruben is a good man at heart. He obviously has an issue of some sort that keeps him from staying on track and moving in the right direction. He did finish my speakers and even did some follow up with touch up paint that I asked for to fix a mistake on my part. The work is flawless and the speakers are stunning in my opinion. It took much longer than what I was told but he did do what he said he would do and in the end made a very happy customer.

For the sake of everyone I really hope he picks himself up and finishes all of the work he has been paid for. What was said earlier about him always pulling out of it has been true, I really hope that will be the case this time.

There is also a flip side to this. When someone orders a pair of speakers, doesn't pay anything up front then backs out after the speakers are built. This leaves the person who built them out not only their labor but the cost for parts, materials and supplies.

And you can't just sell them to somebody else. The chances of somebody else wanting that speaker in that particular finish (whatever it is) and willing to pay for it when they didn't commission it are very slim.  How many times have you seen somebody trying to sell a pair of speakers that they were stuck with waiting 6 to 12 months for a buyer then having to drop the price to less than what the parts cost them just to sell them?

You see, I've learned the hard way too but from the opposite perspective of yours.

What is needed is a method that would protect both parties. Maybe a version of how the bank my dad used to deal with handled construction loans (at that time dad was a general contractor building houses). They would approve the entire loan but would not release all the funds up front. The would release the funds in three parts with 1/3 up front then the other 2/3 at two intermediate points during construction.

With speakers it might look like this:

The buyer puts down enough to cover the cost of materials and supplies to build the cabinets.

Once the builder demonstrates the cabinets are built, the buyer sends in an additional fee to cover the cost of finishing the cabinets (this could be the cost of materials and supplies if the builder is finishing the cabinets or the cost of getting the finish done if it is outsourced).

Then once the builder demonstrates the cabinets are finished the buyer makes an additional payment to cover the cost of components (i.e. one of Danny's kits).

Once the speakers are finished and the builder provides proof of the finish the buyer pays the remainder of the price, including shipping and packaging costs (if the speakers are being shipped) and the speakers are delivered.

Just something to think about. Remember, there are valid concerns on both sides of the transaction.

Not to sound too cynical, but this is sounding increasingly like a story I've heard from many contractors in the past.  People who owe money tend to dodge phone calls and emails like they are hiding from bill collectors.  It also sounds like robbing Peter to pay Paul; as prepayments or deposits come in, contractors will then have the money to finish previous jobs.  Unfortunately, at some point there is not enough new money coming in to satisfy old commitments, and the house of cards comes down.  I would hate to think that someone's deposit money funded the speakers he made for me early this year.

In the interest of finding out exactly what is going on, and by extension the likelihood of all of us getting our products or money, I propose:

1.  We each post what we have ordered from Ruben, when, and if wwe have paid already.
2.  Parts status for each order.  In some cases Ruben has said he was awaiting parts from Danny, or that Danny failed to ship parts.

I'll start:  I ordered  a pair of XLS Encores with upgrades for $575 shipped on March 23, 2015.  They were supposed to be done in three weeks.  If I recall correctly, they arrived on April 28,2015.  I ordered a matching center channel on August 7, 2015 for $362.  After not hearing from him I asked for an update on September 14, 2015.  He responded 10 days later saying he was without Internet and phone for three weeks.  He said that he would ship the speaker by the first week of October and warned that he was switching phone and Internet carriers the following week in case I don't hear from him.  He said to "consider the speaker shipped".  That was the last I heard from him despite numerous requests for an update.

Hi all,
just an idea - suggestion.
Can someone find his address,
maybe someone that bought something from him
and then post the address,
maybe an AC member living near his place can drive there
and see what's going on, like face to face
and then, post his findings.
Like I wrote above:
Just an idea and suggestion.
All those post are making him not look good,

which I am sure is not the case.

Some of us remember member Daygloworange, who also did magnificent work... until he didn't.
I just don't get what the problem is with cabinet guys.  Reliable ones are uncommon.

I remember that one too.

and many learned with Custom Concepts a few years back  :-(

I wonder if John Prator of KCI ever got his speakers? I remember him telling me that he had spent thousands on a deposit for the CLS-9's.

The cabinet maker/AWOL list seems to be increasing: AV123, Daygloworange/Custom Concepts, Bob Smith/Aether/SP speakers...

I prefer to work with local guys in all honesty. A squeaky wheel gets oiled. FWIW.

Best,
Anand.

Well then...
Let's hope Ruben re-surface and make some customers - AC members
happy with his awesome work.

I've been reluctant to post my "FULL" experience and outcome with dealing with Ruben as I no longer have a dog in this fight, but it pains me to see people continuously left in the dark after having already paid hundreds or thousands of $$$ and have zero to show for it except stress of wondering if they were "had".

As I have already mentioned quite some time ago in this very thread, I commissioned Ruben to build a pair of custom LS-9s, LS-C and matching LS-C stand.  Per Rubens request, I paid 75% up front for him to start.  VERY long story short, over a year later and very little contact aside from the occasional broken promise, I finally got my speakers.  When I sent the final payment in, I left off 10% of the total price (not 10% of the remaining 25%).  I refused to pay full price and had actually deducted 20% at first, but in the end deducted only 10% of the total price of the job.

He came through, but at a price I am unwilling to ever accept again.  His work is masterful and the envy of so many, but his conduct with business is by far the worst I have experienced.

I wish those who have paid money (and still waiting) the best with getting a finished product.  I know it has been said before and even told to me by Ruben himself, he is an utter perfectionist and  *IF* you get your speakers you will be pleased beyond words with their appearance.  The two times I spoke to him on the phone, he was a pleasure to talk to and very humble and respectful, so it's extremely hard to be angry with someone like him from a personality standpoint.

To comply with contractor laws I have to do business searches to ensure subcontractors are properly licensed and aren't delinquent. When I do the same search (https://www.sos.state.co.us/biz/BusinessEntityCriteriaExt.do) in Colorado for Fallen Enclosures, I find that they have been delinquent since 2/1/2011.  :(

After RMAF was over, I visited a friend 2.7 miles from Rueben's house. I though about stopping by, but never had a chance.

While I can't help but wonder something... Everyone is saying they spent a lot of money, but I wonder if it's a lot of money for them or period. The question, why I am curious, is because while I don't know Rueben besides buying some flat packs (that came right away) I have to wonder if the amount he charges put him under. When you run on skeleton principles it's easy to go turned upside, FAST. He's not the first or last single worker (sometimes there's a few more) to go belly-up. But there is always the possibility he's one of the very (if any) few that correct the situation.

If you have zero money and you need money to finish something that takes money... you can imagine the challenge.

Lets not leave out "Eargasm" (you remember him). I spend $1300 on an LS-6 flat pack in 2009. Finally after $50 here and there, he repaid me in full. It took 6 long frustrating years and hundreds of emails and excuses and I doubt I'll ever trust a cabinet maker guy again. FWIW

I'm in the same boat.  I'm out nearly $400 (not a huge amount, but money is money).  I strongly suspect that Ruben put himself in the position of many small contractors, relying on incoming money to finish previous projects, in effect a small scale Ponzi Scheme, albeit an unintentional one.

I have given up on getting my product and am making other arrangements.  Its water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.  If I were looking for speaker flat packs and had a reliable drawing, any competent cabinet shop can run them out for you.

We're not all schmucks  But I can tell you with certainty that great craftsmen and artists are seldom similarly great at the business end of things. There are exceptions, of course.

FWIW, I've eyeballed this particular market (build cabs for DIY market), and I just don't see it as a viable business model. Not to say it couldn't be, I just can't see it as a put-food-on-the-table business. One runs out of buyers really quickly because it's a tiny market. That makes the idea of volume making up for low margin dang near impossible. Conversely, making it on bigger margins and low volume will exclude a bunch of your potential customers...it's DIY after all. The more overhead you have, the worse the model looks.

I'd love to have a $50K CNC router, but would have a devil of a time paying for it selling speaker cabs. I think that's the primary reason you see folks come and go, on the surface it looks like you could make a little money, but making a living at it is a tough row to hoe. In my mind, that makes it a (sometimes expensive) hobby.

As it is with many things, the way to make a million at it is to start with two million :D
