Title: Compact OB layout I can steal
Post by: sfdoddsy on 19 Jun 2019, 11:54 am
I’ve been told by my lovely wife that I need to reduce the size and impact of my OBs if I wish to have them in our pretty new home.

Decor is minimalist mid century vibe.

Drivers are a 6.5” coax (Seas C18) and either an 8 or 10” midwoofer.

Sub below 80hz.

A miniature Orion was my first thought,  but I’d love to be inspired.

I gave up my big OB rig when the grand kids came. I can relate.  :|

You might want to think about a “hybrid” like the new GR Research studio monitors. You need to move a lot of air in an OB to get good bass and proper tone. Hard to get with out open baffle servo subs or at least 15” woofers on a large baffles.

You might be surprised how good a well designed woofer “in a box” can sound. Add a servo sub and everyone is happy, even the wife.

+1 on a Bass Reflex woofer, other option wife approved is get a planar headphones and a tube amp.

I really like the look of the Spatial Audio X2:

It'll have to be smaller. Probably stand mount.

I was thinking something along the lines of the Tekton 4.5.

Steve, you really made me strain my brain here, but I finally remembered - http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0907/nomad_audio_sentinel.htm (http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0907/nomad_audio_sentinel.htm)

Btw, for music, I would cross much lower than 80hz (which is fine for HT), unless using correlated stereo subs. 40-50hz max. Any decent 8" will get you there. YMMV.

cheers,

AJ

Thanks AJ. I do remember those from back in the day.

That's sort of what I'm thinking, except maybe with an open back on the mid/bass cabinet too (with active EQ).

Danny just worked up an interesting small OB planar setup.  There is a thread on it in his circle.  They will need support for the bass, but a sub would deliver that no problem.

I never had love in my room for my ears with a truly small OB setup.

I copied the Caintuck Betsy. A single Visaton B200 in each. Awesome.

For mid century modern why not get a pair of Klipsch Heresy 3s?  They are box speakers but they are designed to go up against a wall and the fit /finish is perfect for that style home.  I found my old pair to be very nice sounding driven by a good SET tube amp and they were visually the least intrusive speaker I’ve ever owned.
