I started an audio dealership in 1980, so I was a tire kicker in the 70's in the audio world. In the 70's, there were a lot of brick and mortar stores to go to and listen. Two speakers always stood out for me back then. The Acoustat X's and the Yamaha NS-1000's.

I got to live with a pair of the Acoustats for one year, still kicking myself for ever selling them. That buyer is now 79 years old and has never found anything better. He still facebooks me once in a while.

I would still like to try the 1000's, many used ones are now selling on the net for $500-600. I did find a fairly recent review on the 1000's.

"I would still like to try the 1000's, many used ones are now selling on the net for $500-600."

Be careful. In Asia really popular speakers become so desirable miniature versions are produced. Sort of like having a 1/24 scale Ferrari F40 on your bookcase.

The NS-1000MM (note the two M's) seen here is the replica version.

 http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-NS-1000MM-3Way-Speaker-Z101420-A-B-With-bracket-From-Japan-/282172527244?hash=item41b2cb128c:g:dykAAOSw65FXrolN

Note the size "Dimensions (width × height × depth) : 150W×275H×180Dmm". For us Imperial units users that is 5.9 x 10.8 x 7.1 inches. Not all the units listed on EBay include the dimensions, buyer beware.

Of course the original NS-1000M (one M) is more like 14.7 x 26.5 x 12.8 inches.

Here's another for $280, apparently from the same vendor:

Apparently they sold only in Japan for 30,000Y, and the NS-10MM for 18,000Y
I'd be curious to hear those. I've never seen a 2.5cm dome called a mid range before, not to speak of a 1.5cm dome tweeter - that's 1" and less than 9/16".

DIY stands for 1000 and maybe 5000.

http://liquidaudio.com.au/diy-yamaha-ns1000m-speaker-stands/

There is a lot of 1000's on Craiglist but not as cheap, use searchtempest. There were boatloads of the 1000's sold all over the world.

Thanks Norman and Russell for the info.

I saw a blurb that JBL is bringing out updated Century 100's again. I worked at a salon in the 70's and we sold a lot of the 100's.

OzarkTom, Keep on looking on Craigslist. I bought mine last year for $1100 a pair.
They are really heavy and substantial. You need two people to lift them.
Some mild scratches on the cabinets but the drivers were in perfect shape except for a few dents in the wire mesh covers on the tweeters and mids. Thanks goodness the covers are over these drivers, they must be fragile.

So how do you like the 1000's to your Omegas in SQ?

In approximately 15 hours I will be at the Taipei Audio Fair. The NS-5000 speakers will be in one of the rooms. I will spend time in that room.

This will be the first day of the show, so I'll keep my expectations slightly lower. [Okay. I'll try to keep them lower, but I've been dreaming about these speakers for over a year now.]

I'll report my impressions if you wish.  :)

The price listed in the ad is $280,000 NTD which is approximately $8825.00 USD.

Are you kidding? I guess you have no idea of the level of quality on offer here.

The Yamaha dealer/rep who staged the show ought to be shot or flogged in public!

The Yamaha setup was split into three partitions - HT, mid-fi accompanied by a Yamaha baby grand player piano in constant play mode, and high-end top of the line Yamaha equipment paired to the NS-5000 speakers. As you walk into the three-part room you turn left and walk into a small room for HT, stay where you are in the piano/mid-fi space, or turn right to enter the high-end space (approx dimensions: 15' x 8' with 9' ceiling). The NS-5000s were placed on the long wall approx. 7 feet apart. There were two rows of seats for listeners. The front row 'sweet spot' was approximately 4 feet from the speakers. The back row was set against a very reflective wall. This room had a door to the hallway which was locked. The idea was that everyone must crowd into the central door before fanning out. However, there was a sign beside the locked door that read "Yamaha Room xxx". Of course, every Tom, Dick, and Harry pounded on the damned door thinking that was the entrance. [Okay, they were more likely Xiao Zhang, Ah-Liang, and Neng Xiong rather than Tom, Dick, and Harry, but that's beside the point.]

Needless to say, the NS-5000 room was 'lively'. I did not stay for more than a minute. I took one photograph and left. I'll return today with my The Best of Blue Note and Natalie Merchant's Paradise is There CDs in order to get a better feel for the speakers. Hopefully, the staff figured out the need for a sign on the locked door directing attendees to the central door.

While I was at the show yesterday, I was given a complimentary pass for another day. I choose to use it today.

FRM,

I assume you were poking fun about the pricing. The price is $280,000 New Taiwan Dollars.

In '84,  I think I paid 1200 for two NS-1000s.   I found the tweeters to be a little harsh.  The Mrs. didn't like the footprint.

I've been much happier with my KEF's that I bought in '95.  I paid 1500 for the pair of those.

I forgot to follow up with a report of my 2nd day's visit.

The room was even more annoying the second day. There was so much background noise and human chatter that I couldn't even here the damned speakers that were 5 feet in front of me.

The NS-5000M speakers were not the main event for the Yamaha dealer. Even the staff admitted the setup was lousy. I gave one guy my cell phone number with instructions to call me in a week to arrange for an in-store demonstration. Guess what? I never got a call.  :nono:

Saw this in the TAS March 5, 2021 email newsletter.

The Absolute Sound - 2020 Product of the Year Awards | High-End Loudspeaker of the Year

Yamaha NS-5000
https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/2020-product-of-the-year-awards-high-end-loudspeaker-of-the-year?mc_cid=3773e16e3b&mc_eid=617444c021

Although the article says it is a review it reads more like an ad. This is nothing like the old TAS that never accepted advertising, looks like they have a new business model: Pay to Play.
