Once again, Sonny Rollins was the highlight for me. From his first note, he said, "I'm here!"
Listening to music all day at too high volume levels (this seems to be getting worse every year) can be tiring, and Sonny's group was the finale of the festival, but I left completely energized.
At 81, he may not have all the raw power he did just a few years ago, but he still has more than most and, most importantly, he has a transcendental quality that is hard to explain.
As always, watching him teach the younger players in his group is fun and it seems to be all about improving the music (which is does).
May he have many more years of doing what he does best.
