Title: OB suggestions for Pass Labs F5--25 watt Class "A"
Post by: rtate on 27 Oct 2009, 11:47 am
I am building a Pass Lab designed F5 amp and I would like some suggestions for DIY open baffle speakers to try.
I am open to single or multi driver designs.
My only requirement is for High Efficiency. The higher the better!! I'm thinking 92 db and up....
I have a good powered sub to fill in the bottom end if needed.
Any suggestions would be Great   :thumb:
Cheers!!

Look at Martin King's OB projects.  One of his is active and I think that would be ideal.  Use your Pass amp to drive the top and then get a plate amp or a cheap pro amp to drive the woofer.  While the Jordans aren't super hi-efficiency, I get the impression they can be driven by small watt amps just fine, especially when high passed such as this.

Good to see this posted here rtate, I expect some good suggestions.

Josh has started us off well, and as I have heard your system, I bet your sealed servo sub would blend well with OB mains - can you remind me what frequencies you can bring it in?

It would be ideal to remove the lowest bass from the OB drivers, helps them manage their typically limited XMAX, and keeps them singing where they are happiest.  I use an external crossover for this, but for trials the plate amp Xover in your sub will likely do the trick.

We will give it a run with my b200's, once the amp is complete too, to give an idea what those might sound like.

Thanks Mark , My Rythmik sub crossover goes from 25-120Hz with either 12 or 24db slope, phase is also adjustable.

I have some rythmik subs, and I would suggest targetting the OB for 40-50 Hz or so.

How about the GR Research V1. It has a high efficiency top mated to a pair of OB servo bass drivers using the same Rythmik system as your current sub.

There are lots of speakers that will fit the bill.  Your 25 watt amp will clip al levels similar to a 100watt amp driver FR.  Heck probably even higher.  92 dB certainly isn't asking too much.  Many Fostex, B200, HA PSI 10 or 15 inch, Lowther, the new TBs(Lowther on the cheap), etc...  I'd still say put some OB woofer's under them in an MJK sort of fashion whatever you do.  If you'r really confident and adventurous go for the SL way: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/

Whatever you think or decide to go with, keep us posted.

Thanks fellas...
I just got a pair of Hawthorne SI15's to introduce me to the OB world!!!
I  will use my rythmik sub at first, moving to OB bass when
time and $$ permit!!
Hopefully I will compare these to some "full rangers" and move on from there.
I will post progress and pictures when I  can  :green:

I left out "with the bass removed" your 25watt amp will clip at levels similar to a 100 watter running FR.

Have you decided how you are going to build your baffles?

So far I gather that less baffle is better for imaging and soundstage with the sacrifice of less bottom end.
I have read both pros and cons for wings and lowered drivers for floor re-enforcement...
SO really I'm not quite sure yet

It's easier to get away with wide than deep, but wide won't help much and deep will damage the MR.  Since you have a sub you'd be far ahead of the game to build a Solo-like speaker.  Have you played with the Edge?
