I've used this player for about a year...

http://wtfplay-project.org/

My system reads wav files rom a 2TB USB external HDD, into an i5 processor laptop, then USB out to a Gustard U12, then AES out to minidsp PWR-ICE125 driving Siegfried Linkwit Lxmini speakers.

Text based interface, no network capability, just a USB music player. Volume is via CMD line in wtfplay.

I've been through foobar, then Hysolid, then smallplayer. This player allows me to hear into the music and recording  more, so I am suspecting it has a lower noise floor and it has been described by others as being very analogue sounding.

Not for everyone, but for my USB drive stored music this has been the best software. The developer is active, and his webpage speaks about the direction he is working on with this.

A lot of buzz on this about 2-3 years ago. Been quiet but the last update was sometime this year and I understand his work on SBC is proceeding well.
