Putty question

This might be a stupid question, but does the putty ever dry out or need to be replaced on the passive drivers?  I'm trying to visualize what type of putty would last for years.

I have a LARGER sub purchased in 1992 or 1993 and while the putty is "stiffer", and "dryer" it is still adjustable.
