New apple computers can now output 32bit audio...
« on: 27 Feb 2011, 12:02 am »
Using a new Mac mini I found it will output 32bit /96k audio...
After listening for a wk. I feel it is a game changer of significance.
Not all dacs can support this but one's that can will deliver master tape
Performance almost regardless of file format whether lossless or lossy.
Isabella can and you will not believe the resolution those extra bits bring
All of this is reference to my ears and using an Isabella and 30.2...
With Omega super hemps and also horn shoppe horns...among other equipment.
Regards
Frank

Who makes 32bit/96k software?

The M2Tech HiFace USB>SPDIF converter shows 32 bits in Core Audio (not adjustable) although the sampling rate is adjustable, dependent on the connected DAC.

I am not sure if the 32 bit word length makes a difference, but the HiFace far outperforms the Mini's Toslink output in all aspects. It's not even close.

How can it make a lossy format sound better? It's still compressed and/or missing bits. I would guess it would just make the digital mishmash sound like a more defined digital mishmash.

I could be wrong but I think Adobe Soundbooth supports 32bit.

I never said anything about lossy formats.

I only have AIFF and ALAC files here.

I would be curious about the source as well. Is it 32-bit, or 24-bit?  If you go and change the midi control output to 24-bit, rather than 32-bit, what sort of difference do you hear?

That RWA DAC is listed at a 16-bit, so I guess I'm having trouble understanding how a quality gain could be achieved moving to 32-bits.  What does he DAC do when I receives those extra bits, or is it capable of getting those extra bits and subsampling down to 16 bits before he digital to analog conversion?

Maybe Vinnie can interject and educate us.
