Fellow Tube-O-Philes,
This thread is for links to reputable repair companies. Please add to the list if you have a favorite repair technician. And, no, it does not matter if they repair tube or solid-state gear.
Here is my "short" list:
http://www.analogique.com/ (http://www.analogique.com/)
http://www.austinstereo.com/service.html (http://www.austinstereo.com/service.html)
http://www.circlestereo.com/ (http://www.circlestereo.com/)
http://www.smcaudio.com/ (http://www.smcaudio.com/) McCormack gear a specialty, obviously.
http://www.vintageamprepair.net/ (http://www.vintageamprepair.net/) Specializing in Threshold and Forte
http://www.stereomanuals.com/ (http://www.stereomanuals.com/) A resource for service manuals.
http://www.sound-smith.com/ (http://www.sound-smith.com/)
http://www.stereorepair.net/index.htm (http://www.stereorepair.net/index.htm)
http://www.vintageaudio.com/ (http://www.vintageaudio.com/)

http://www.musictechnology.com/ (http://www.musictechnology.com/)
http://www.sertechelectronics.com/ (http://www.sertechelectronics.com/)
That should get things started.

Musical Concepts: http://www.musicaldesign.com/MC_Dyna_Amp.html
Tube and Solid State build/mod/repair. Excellent upgrades.
-
Does anyone know who on these lists would be a good option for repair of "vintage" high end Levinson/Proceed CD transports?

Douglaston, NY
Scott Gramlich, a very competent and reasonable tech who works on tube, SS, speakers and pro gear. Been in business for a couple of decades.

You may need to do some "legwork" in that you might consider emailing two or three after reading their "about us" type webpage. You might find someone by Googling "Levinson/Proceed CD transport repair".
I had a Melos preamp repaired by Ben Jacoby of High-End Audio Repair in NY. with excellent results. I did a fair bit of searching to find him.
Hope this helps,
Jake
Edit: rpf beat me to the punch and with a better answer!

The Analog Store located in Raleigh, NC
Alex (the owner) is an up front and good guy to speak with.

Ditto for Alex. He can do tuner alignment, even rebuild Quad ESLs. I saw a R2R deck go in as pudding and come out like new, total ground up restoration. He does mail order repairs.

I use David a lot.
He will ask you questions so as to determine what is the best way of going about what you are trying to accomplish.

I don't know if Scott works on CD transports. Doesn't have the equipment to do tuner alignments. I do know he is great with amps, speakers and general repairs though.
-
Oops...my bad, I assumed you knew he did that type of specifically.
Here are two links from the list above that have Levinson on their list plus fix transports:
http://www.stereorepair.net/index.htm (http://www.stereorepair.net/index.htm)
http://www.austinstereo.com/service.html (http://www.austinstereo.com/service.html)
I'm certain there are more and maybe one close to you.
And thank you to those who added to the list!

I have had "Craig" at Nosvalves fix my tube amps (he's in Michigan)...........you can check him out here:
http://www.nosvalves.com/ (http://www.nosvalves.com/)
I think he works mostly on vintage stuff.........but he did repair my Rogue 120's for me.

Tubes = happiness for my self-designed Open Baffle speakers. But I need help... does anyone know of a really ethical tube amp repair shop in the Ventura or Santa Barbara area of California... I might even seriously consider Los Angeles (about 1.7 miles away). But I don't want to ship my Heathkit... too many things happen when it is in the hands of shippers.
I deeply appreciate any information that could help me to get my 1950's re-circuited Heathkit playing without occasional performance anomalies. Those EL 84's and my OB's make love happen together.
Thanks for any suggestions.
With Warmest Regards ~ Richard

I will second that. Top notch in every respect. He tunes pianos as well. Sounds like a great combo to me.

I found a good one in Harrisburg, PA:
http://harrisburgradiolab.com/
They did a really nice job on my Harman Kardon F50x tuner and are going over my Sherwood S3000-V now.
Fast turnaround, reasonable price, 90 Day Warranty, they've won my business.

Anyone know a good place in Atlanta, Ga? I have a Dared SL2000a preamp that has major hum and need some help....and yes I replaced all the tubes first.

Hi to all,

Would appreciate any assistance.

Best tech in the L.A. area is Mitch Singerman. 310-823-5145 Mitch is the authorized repair destination for E.A.R. as well as other companies. He is thorough, knowledgeable, reasonable and reasonably fast.He is attentive to your specific issues with a variety of vintage and modern gear.Things don't go into a six week "black hole" with this tech. The Audio Specialist is much closer to me but based on past experience this guy says he can repair it but will sit on it for months and then tell you he can't figure it out.I took him a pair of JBL c36 speakers ("Oh yeah,i can work on those") to fix and 6 weeks later he says he can't figure out what was wrong. This didn't stop him from charging me to look at them......... OUCH! 5 minutes with another tech..... it was a blown tweeter, replaced in a few days. As always, all reviews, comments and recommendation are based on personal experience.Your mileage may vary.

That's a great little preamp! A buddy of mine had one for a while and he always had good sound. Never heard the amps though. I'm sure they're equally as good. Don't know about any mods. I'm sure they can be 'updated' a bit with bypass caps in PS, better diodes, upgraded caps and resistors and such. Any reasonable tech could do these. You might send a PM to Blair at Niteshade Audio (an AC sponsor). I think he's doing some mods on vintage equipment.

Richard Gray at National TV in New Orleans - the same R.G. of Richard Gray Power Company. If you're ever in the N.O.,
a must-visit and a must attend the N.O. audio club - particularly, when Richard hosts.
-
Wow, R.G. has a successful power conditioning company and a repair shop? Good info for our Bayou audiophiles.
Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread!

RHB Sound Dezign is my go-to place for amp repairs and mods, especially anything tubed. They modded my CJ PV-12 and it sounds unbelievable now. The rhythm and bass slam are from another planet, never heard tube gear sound so good.
Plus he's a really, and I mean really, nice guy. www.rhbsound.com

Guys, I like this list, are there any tube experts in the western Mass area? It's nice to avoid shipping if possible. Thanks Norm
-
If anyone in NC is stuck for a tech, I can help. I do not do repairs for a living, it is more a hobby, but I have been working on tube gear for 30 years and understand the topologies rather than just assume the design started out good.

In the St Louis region Mike Missel is the go-to guy for all of the GAS members. Great guy, great work, great rates. He's rebuilt/repaired all kinds of high end gear for me. AND he's a serious audiophile.

Sorry, a little off topic, but I need to make a plug here for Miller Sound for vintage speaker repair. They've been around a long time, but pretty much all their business comes from word of mouth. GREAT people who are among the absolute best in the business. http://www.millersound.net

Mitch Singerman out of California should be also listed~ Excellent and superd service~

I'm in New York City, and would recommend Blackie Pagano:
https://www.blackiepagano.com/
A lot of people recommended him before, and he also helped me bring one of my beloved tube amps come alive and work better.
A very friendly guy with trustful service, although his turn-around time can be long since so many people seek his help.

Have a vintage Pioneer SX1250 receiver I bought new in the 70’s. Prefer not to ship. Live in NE Florida. Would like to get it rebuilt as it is long in the tooth. Willing to drive anywhere in Florida or Georgia, possibly NC. Any suggestions anyone?

Good luck, that Pioneer SX-1250 is well worth it.

Thank each of you for the response. Reviewed the links. There are a few good candidates that specialize in the old Pioneer SX series close by, namely in Jax and O-town. :thumb:

Happy to help! One of the cool benefits of these forums, eh?
Please keep us posted on your progress. And I suggest you start a new "Pioneer SX-1250 Restoration" thread. I believe it would serve fellow vintage enthusiaats if you started this new threas in our Vintage Circle.
