Cherry STM 36/48/60 volts
« on: 3 Mar 2021, 01:22 am »
Hello everyone,

I am looking for a quiet amp for my Raal 140-15d tweeter (95dB sensitity and no passive XO).

For STM:

Gain: 24dB (balanced, rear), 33dB (single ended, front)
Sensitivity (KING 60V Version): 3.1Vin for 400Wout into 4Ω
Sensitivity (48V Version): 2.2Vin for 125Wout into 4Ω

Considering the output of my DAC is:
Line Output Level Balanced     4.5Vrms

If I use the 36volts vs the 60v power supply, which power supply will give the highest sound level for the same volume on the dac?

I understand Cherry have 22 dB gain

36 volts cherry clip at 2.4 volts (70 watts)
48 volts cherry clip at 2.4 volts (140 watts)
60 volts cherry clip at 3.1 volts (200 watts)

With 1 volt input, the 36 cherry will play less loud than the 48 cherry right ?

With the King, the amp have internal modification to have more gradation ? 2.4 to 3.1 volts to allow the volume have more steps ?

Nice you found a reliable answer with your friend,  since the last year have been many new members doing double or triple comparative questions.

Nope ... I missed some points.

King or 48 volts Cherry is the same amp ... no internal modification If I understand correctly.

Why with the 60 volts the input sensitivity is lower (3.1 volts vs 2.4 volts ??)

Oh yeah they are fascinanting amps.
May be different impedance.

Hope I can clear things up....

The gain is the same regardless of supply voltage.  STM is 24dB through the balanced inputs on the back and 33dB through the front input.  Maraschino monoblocks (DTM, ILM, GCM) are 22dB.

30V supplies are no longer used for Maraschino amps since 36V provides more power (150Wpc into 4Ω) and less than 0.1dB difference to the noise floor.  We offer 48V and 60V as well, with rated power into 4Ω at 250Wpc and 400Wpc respectively.

So, I’ll list sensitivity with different gains and different rated power per supply voltage....

Using only a small portion of the volume "range" means less dynamic range.  Best case for dynamic range is that your highest listening level is exactly max volume.

In order to keep things uniform, we don't usually alter the gain per amp, but it's possible.
