Amazon fire and HDMI
« on: 16 Nov 2018, 02:15 pm »
I'm having difficulty getting the Amazon Fire TV stick to work with my projector. I need to use an HDMI switcher that has an audio extractor in order to get the sound to my DAC and on out to the speakers. I am wondering about compatibility between the 4K branded Fire Stick and the HDMI switch box. Neither the video works nor does the audio. What sort of switch box with audio extraction would I need to use with the Amazon 4K Fire Stick?

Any ideas or experience in this area?

What are the components in your system (e.g AV Receiver, 2- channel preamp, amp)?

No receiver. The switcher with audio extractor has a Toslink output which I feed to my DAC (Yggdrasil).  From there it goes to my pre-amp and amp. All two channel. (Old school).

Also, the audio portion of my cable TV feed doesn't make it over to the DAC via the switcher's audio extractor. That really makes no sense since there is no potential mismatch between the components.

By that I mean I suspect the switcher has to be 4K compatible with the Amazon Fire stick but I didn't think the cable box supported 4K.

This is the switcher:

https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=15375&seq=1&format=2

The issue may be the spec for HDCP, which is 1.4

The Fire Stick says it is HDCP 2.2

Could that be enough to kill all the functions, both video and audio?

I know the old 1080p switcher (Monoprice Product ID 5557) was made by this company - https://www.port-ta.com/switcher/hdmi-switcher.html

Not sure about the 4k switch or the current Product ID 5557.  I actually got the Port-ta switch (equivalent of Product ID 5557) before they made it for Monoprice.  I used it way back when (before I was into file playback) to extract hi-rez (24/88.2) audio from SACD played through an old Oppo BDP-83.  It's been many years since I used it.  I know Product ID 5557 passed video but I have no seen the 4k switch.  I had some email exchanges with Port-ta about audio (way back when) and it was difficult as it was obvious they were using some language translation software and sometimes it was hard to understand.

There are posts like:

or info like this:

and Monoprice has products like:

Don't know if any of the above is helpful or not

Of course it's helpful. Thanks. The monoprice linked switcher, Product ID 15263, doesn't have an audio extractor function, unfortunately. I have to find a switcher with audio extraction that has HDCP 2.2 and hope that solves the issue. The other option is downgrading to a non-4K Fire Stick. I am getting worn out returning stuff to Amazon and Monoprice since this is all guess work at this point.
