WTB SW12A, PR12A's and Apex Sr 47k modded amp
« on: 22 Apr 2012, 03:26 am »
I recently acquired a used SW12a for a great price, so now I am searching for the missing components to round out a great a low cost subwoofer assembly.  Ideally,  I would like to find another SW12a sub along with two PR12a's.  I think that the Apex Sr amp with the 47k mod would fit the bill for this setup so I am on the look out for a used amp as well.

Please let me know if this is the right spot for this ad or if you have any of the above items.  I am located near Chicago so local would be huge bonus.

Thanks

Danny Richie

That Apex Sr. amp is a good amp for that woofer.

The PR's are going to be hard to find, but I do have more the the newer version of that woofer, the SW-12B.

You can get the same performance with a ported box as with the PR but the port is going to get really large and really long.

And welcome to AC. You can post here in my circle about just about anything.

Danny,

Thanks for the reply and greeting.  I have a line on a single SW12a but I will consider the SW12b if that does not pan out to pair with the other sub.  What tuning freq should I tune a ported box to?

Thanks

I forgot to ask what the optimal ported volume is.   I believe it is around 2.6 if I am not mistaken.

Thanks

2.6 cubic feet tuned to 20Hz works great.

An optimal port is 4.75" in diameter and 41.5" long.

If you don't drive it to hard then you can use a 4" port that is 29" long. flared ends will really help too.

Danny,

Thanks for the response.  Can I use a slot port with the same area as 4.75 in diameter?  Or is that a no no?  If not what do you recommend to get that diameter port?  Sorry for all the questions I am just trying to do all my Homework.

Ryan,

I sent you a pm about the PR's and sub.

Thanks

Slot ports work just as well. No problem. Just be sure that if you are winding it through the box that you also brace that area very well. It can create large panel areas that will easily resonant if not well braced.
