Title: Base: Hardwood/ Birch Ply?

What are the sonic differences? What about the inevitable voids in the ply?

The hardwoods we use do sound quite a bit better than baltic birch. We think that at least
part of the reason is that the hardwoods we use are considerably harder and denser than
birch. We tried making bases out of both maple and walnut and cocobolo was clearly
better.  I suspect that a base made from solid birch hardwood would sound much like the
birch ply.

The differences are mostly in retrieval of fine textures and details.  Compared to hardwoods
the baltic birch is a bit veiled. The hardwoods are also a little smoother sounding.

No problems with voids.  Baltic birch is very high grade and voids are virtually non-existant.
