It's long been an annoyance that you can't turn off the internal display when using an external display, except by closing the lid. Coupled with the fact that you can't turn the laptop on when the lid is closed, its just... you know, you wonder how these decisions get made, but the story illustrates it's just getting worse, Apple are so wrapped up in trying to make you do things "their way" that they're driving long-time customers away...
