Tono Hybrid System
« on: 1 Nov 2016, 07:07 pm »
I've worked up pricing on a 4-piece package that can be configured according to your system needs. The bottom cabinet serves as the base for the upper section to form an 8" 3-way. The passive version will be $2,825 to $3,050 / pair including CUSA shipping with standard cabinet finishes (satin black or gloss black base and red cherry or gloss black upper section). True 35hz bass extension with a large excursion woofer, carbon fibre - Rohacell midbass, and ribbon tweeter.

The hybrid version ($3,325 to $3,550 /pair) adds a 125-watt DSP plate amp on each channel so all you need is a source with RCA line outputs - no additional amplification. This is also a 3-way with the lower crossover point (woofer to mid) active and the mid/tweeter crossover passive. The DSP adds equalization for true 28hz (-3dB) bass extension and by adding a test microphone you can also do room correction.

What do you think?

Seems interesting, since the Tono plays relatively low already why not cross it with a 10' woofer for a lower frequency response?

A 10" would be fine but in a passive design it needs a much larger volume to have reasonable sensitivity with a true (no room gain included) -3dB of 35hz. The woofer base is a 14" cube.

hello Rick, could this hybrid be adapted/modified for an SSR, a Verita?

Rick, this looks very promising!  On the non hybrid model, Any thoughts on having it as a front slotted version to reduce the overall height making it ideal for use as smaller mains or surrounds?  I would really like to see the small size as a sealed version but front slotted.  Just thinking out loud here....

The smaller sealed box would be fine as a surround or main with a subwoofer.

Here's the nearfield bass response curve. Note the great extension with no equalization or room gain.  8)

Nothing new to report as other projects came along so this was put on the backburner.
