There's not a Russian tube that I can't find a decent replacement for.  Even my Dodd pre that takes a 6H30DR sounds pretty darn good with a 7dj8

The EL34 and KT88 Russian tubes are reasonable performers.

So no more Russian tubes until next year.  Gone are EH (Electro Harmonix brands and several other Russian tubes)

Although JJ brand is not Russian, there has already been a run on these too.  Our sources for 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7, and even 6922 types seem to be dried up.

This is terrible news for guitar amplifier producers and musicians.

So far no effect on our solid state equipment.

Ouch.  Makes me glad I went the DIY route,  which allows us of NOS tubes.

With the new GaN technology, I'd say even the Class D amps are starting to get close to tube amps in overall musicality.

As for myself, I already have at least a decade worth of NOS and new production tubes in my stash.  Plus I have 2 very nice SS amps if I ever get low on tubes (First Watt BA3 and Odyssey Kismet monoblocks).  It's nice to have options.

Hmmm...interesting that you call it, "options." Ever heard of hoarding disorder? I'm not a psychiatrist, however....

Hey, I resemble the above remarks.

I have a LOT of 8552 and 1625 output tubes for my two sets of monoblocks.

Check out the staggering increase ( Viva Tubes) for a quad of Tung-Sol KT120's. $1100  :o

This type of behavior is why I went the Custom/DIY route.   The 1625 output tube can still be had for 5 to 10 dollars a tube. The 8552, which sounds very similar to a NOS 6650, can be bought for 12 to 15 dollars each.

My amp thrives on a factory matched quad of Tung-Sol 7581A tubes I installed last September; they should be good for a number of years. That being said, the Tung-Sols currently are not available so if they develop issues I'll swap back in the matched quad of Sovtek 6L6WXT tubes that the 7581A tubes replaced.

Funny, when I changed over to the Sovtek tubes years back, I also purchased a 2d quad as a backup, and after swapping in the Tung-Sol tubes thought, "I guess I should sell the back up set."

Interesting how changing times changes your thinking.

Viva Tubes? That's one place a reason to never buy there. I just got a quad from Kevin maybe 2 weeks ago $256 delivered.
With 3 other quads I got enough now for 10 years. I had seen them for $100 each last week

Of course, it's Economics 101, simple supply and demand.  Russian factories are not ceasing production, they are just not shipping overseas.  Temporary supply shortage, prices go up....in the short term.   But Russian warehouses are filling up.  As soon as trade routes open up again this excess supply hits the markets, and they will be giving them away!    :thumb:
