Title: Smallest not class D stereo power amplifier?
Post by: artur9 on 3 Apr 2018, 03:30 pm
Anyone know of some small class A/B or G but not D power amplifiers? Ideal size is W: 9" (230mm) H: 2 1/4" (65mm) D: 6" (160mm)

I need one for my desktop but don't need DAC or volume control or anything.  Don't really need more than about 25W but more might be better.

I know about Parasound Zamp but I am hoping to find something different, hopefully better, slightly smaller.  The Dayens Ampino looks good, too.

1U rack size is way too big, like double the size I'm looking for.  1/2 rack or 1/4 rack is about right if the depth isn't too extreme.  Again, ideal size is W: 9" (230mm) H: 2 1/4" (65mm) D: 6" (160mm)

I wouldn't dismiss the Parasound. Not for a second.

I have a Zamp.  It's ok.  I like the connector layout on the Spark better.

Dayton APA150 is very good. Don't let the low price fool you.

For real.  I frequently demonstrated one in my system in place of my "good" amp.  It's impressive if you don't need more power.

I had an Ampino with the better caps but sold it after I tried the TBI Millenia MG3 Class BD Integrated Audio Amplifier. This amp had better detail and more transparency. Not a pure D, but a BD amp. You can get this for $500, and sounds great even on Quads. Very small!

You can also run it on battery if you prefer. I never tried the headphone section, but it also has that option. You can run it on the side. I used it that way also.

I own some TBI products.  Nice outfit but I don't see any physical measurements posted for that.  Can you measure it, please?

I was reading that the APA150 was originally some Emotiva, which speaks well for it.  But @12" deep I'd like smaller.

I tried a Chinese amp with those dimensions and the depth really didn't work.  The amp itself also didn't work at all after a few weeks

I've had the Jolida 301 for some time and really enjoy it. It uses a pair of 12AX7s as the input gain stage.

Dimensions: 7 inches wide by 6 inches deep by 4 inches high

I'm not interested in tubes.  Seems like a very slippery slope ;-)

+1 on the Ampino. I had one a while back. It fits your size requirements and sounds mighty fine.

Clones Audio 25p (25 Watt Power Amp).  I don't think they make it anymore, so look for a used one.  But they still make monoblocks and an integrated.  Dimensions of the power amp is 170mm(w) x 100mm(h) x 170mm(d).  https://www.clonesaudio.com/

These Clones seems Class D amps.
There is an integrated and an pre/power both 25W.

P.S.> after a web search found Clones are chip amps.
The integrated 25W amp cost 8,799 HKD or 1,120 USD Gulp!
After ship and Customs will cost even more.

Yes, these are Class AB based on the LM3875 chip. Very standard implementation, nothing special that “Clones” has done. Thousands of these can be found on diyaudio or Peter Daniel’s implementations.

A good “second” or “third” amp.

https://www.soundstageaccess.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/758-clones-audio-25ir-integrated-amplifier

Parts cost outside of chassis is about $100 max for stereo. For integrated, I would say $150-$200 max.

Best,
Anand.

Hard to find a finished LM3875 amp because of all the DIY stuff.  I admire the enthusiasm but DIY is not for me.

What do you see as the deficiencies of the LM3875?

The only implementations of the LM3875 I have seen are basically standard issue, non-composite, non-nested feedback implementations, which are basically “gainclone” types. In those gainclone implementations, the LM3875 lacks detail, power and authority compared to the LM3886 in an equivalent gainclone circuit.

Best,
Anand.

Having no luck with my quest.

Just out of curiosity are there any tiny 1000W Class D amps out there?
