My new year's letter to Jim
« on: 11 Jan 2007, 12:26 am »
This was my letter to Jim, wishing him a good new year, and expressing my appreciation for his efforts.  I post it here for all to read, with his blessings.

>Hello Jim, and best wishes for a happy, healthy new year!
>I am more thrilled than ever with my HT-3's - love them! Last night
>the wife and I were listening to Tierney Sutton, and she turned and
>said "you're NOT getting rid of these speakers!". No way, I replied.
>I hope Phillip ****** ordered a pair after auditioning mine - I
>don't know what more he could hope for. He brought a friend along
>who is instrumental in "contemporaryjazz.com". This friend brought
>along a demo disc, which he left with me - I think you should listen
>to this - Manul Katche "neighborhood". He described it as "one of
>the best recordings he has heard".
>The first track features a VERY deep bass line, along with Manul's
>very musical use of cymbals - I nearly was knocked off my chair!
>  I have since taken this disc to a few dealers showrooms, and they
> had nothing that could deliver what this disc has on it! Yesterday,
> I was at a dealer (who thinks that Manul is Peter Gabriel's
> drummer) - we put the disc on, and he said "it sounds like any
> other good jazz recording". I told him it was time to rethink what
> he has on his floor, because he wasn't hearing half of what was on
> the disc - and he was welcome to come to my house to learn what he is
missing!
>  So, check out the disc, stay well, and thank you for the beautiful
> sounding (and looking) speakers!
>Take care,
>Chuck S

Chuck,
That would be Manu Katche. He has played for a lot of musicians. I think I first heard him on Sting's "...Nothing Like the Sun" album. Check him out at:

Ah, yes, you are right!
I was reading the hand printed label on the ripped CD, the "U" has a tail that looks like an "L".  Anyway, the dude has been around, and it is a great recording (on ECM, I was told today).

What albums do you think showcase Manu's best work?
Thanks.

He's done work for say Peter Gabriel.
It's hard to say what is the best.
I like him more on the account of what he bring to the totality of the sound when he's drummin'
What ever your drummin' fancy, this disc is just one to own!!!
It's the 2003 remaster you want!!! NB!!!

This one is just  !!! The track "in your eyes" is just awesome!!! You'll need to glue
your back hair back on, one by one as they keep running over to your stereo and acting like mad groupies!!!  :P

I mean, Manu katche, David Rhodes, Tony Levin playing together, with Peter!!! It does not get any better than that!!!
