stand mount monitor
« on: 12 Feb 2024, 08:51 pm »
I put this here as this might be where it will be seen by right persons

I am weighing Salk Silk monitors  with GR NX studio as my mains

Had Salk song 3 and im all in a a good ribbon/film/amt tweeter
I have a pair Suoer Vs and know that the NX monitor is the right size for my room, the V's are so overkill and will be rehomed soon as I cant make myself cut em up for the subs, so bass will be covered somehow with subs

I value everyones experience here as many have heard both of these and wonder if having to pick and price was same which would be the choice?
All feed back is appreciated,

Jim Salk is retired and no longer making speakers, the only place to get the Silk Monitors is on the used market. The closest match will be the Fritz Carrera. The beryllium and RAAL tweeters sound very similar.
https://www.fritzspeakers.com/CarreraBESpecifications.htm

I have heard both the Carrera and NX Studio but at different times and different rooms. The Carrera will have superb depth, imaging and detail without brightness or harshness and amazing bass for it's size, you could get by without a sub in a small room.

The NX Studio needs more room behind it, as you know from owning the V's. You may need more room treatment with the NX Studio too. And a sub like one of the smaller RELs. A lot of people like the spacious sound.

If I had to pick I would choose the Carrera regardless of cost. I have a loaner pair of Fritz Carbon 7 SE Mk 2 if you are close to Tucson, AZ.

Here you go!  These speakers were designed and are sold by the crossover designer of almost all of Salk's speakers ... Dennis Murphy.  https://philharmonicaudio.com/

You will NOT find a better speaker for any price near that of Philharmonic speakers.  Plus, the man is a genuine gift to our hobby.  You should give the website a look and check out the Philharmonic thread (LONG) on AVS.  Good luck with your purchase.

There is a pair of Silks for sale currently. I personally have 2 pairs and love them. I would have to say out of all my Salk speakers these are my favorite. They sound like they play way lower than the specs suggest. The sound they produce is just so smooth yet detail is still very much there. However at 83 dB they need some power to get them singing. I was sending them 400rms the same as Jim with his 600R. Both drivers used in the Silks are top shelf offerings and the price reflects this.

My understanding is that Dennis Murphy designed many of the crossovers for Salk speakers. Salk also sold his BMR Monitors (https://salksound.com/model.php?model=BMR+Monitors). Dennis now has a full line of speakers, including several stand mount monitors: https://philharmonicaudio.com/

He has links to several of the excellent reviews his stand mount monitors have received.
