Since a lot of great music is recorded poorly, tone controls help ease the pain.  If I stuck to audiophile recordings only, life would be rather boring.

I was a purest but am now an admitted hack.  I added a Lokius to the desk top for low SPL.  I especially like what it does at 6K and 16K.  It just seems to open up the sound.  I tried it on the main system for the same reasons and liked it well enough to take advantage of the rare Schiit Black Friday sale to pick up a Loki Max.

I use digital signal processing which are tone controls forward of my Dac. I equalize to perceived flat response at listening level (room curve). Also use for my headphone system to the Harmon curve.
