Hmmmmm.  No classical.  Except a women singing what's supposed to be a tenor solo.  Sigh.

You should record a track and have Jim include it.

How about we put together a user's demo cd?

We could each contribute one song that we think really highlights our HT3's.

I'd love some ideas on what else to include.  Right now, while they are quite good, there are too many cuts from Ray Charles last album.  There are also one or two others I wouldn't include if I were doing it again today.

I ran into a few nice cuts over the week-end at AK Fest.  I may add one or two of them to the mix.

But I'm always looking for new cuts.  So any ideas would be appreciated.

And Dennis, if you could recommend some good classical cuts, that would be great.  I have run across numerous recordings I like, but don't know if they are the best performances of those pieces.  You would know better.

Jim, I have got the HT3!!!

Still haven't got the time to unpack them yet.. but I want to start ripping your sample cuts into my PC. The list compiled by Zybar only have 15 tracks but I found 16 tracks on the CD you sent me.

Can you give me the latest track list?

Thank you

Barry -

I must have sent you an earlier version of the CD.  I haven't made any changes recently and the list above is current.  Sorry for the confusion.  I have no idea what version I sent you.

This may be a left-field suggestion, but some of my taste leans towards experimental metal...almost all of it is extremely (to put it mildly) bass heavy...I've never had the pleasure of hearing any Salk products (or anything in that class really), but for me, any 'ultimate' speaker will have to provide the skin-vibrating tones the music requires...the new Om album (Conference Of The Birds) is one that gets the most play around here these days. Just bass and drums, so low-end extension is critical. I know this isn't the sort of thing 99% of your buyers would listen to, but its something I'm curious about all the same.

Jim's HT3 is the best I've heard when it comes to Jazz, because it's very revealing, ultra-transparent, the speakers disappear and if you close your eyes, you won't be able to find them. However, the speaker may be too revealing for certain type of music, I have never enjoyed listening to my rock collection, they're too harsh, rock&roll typically sounded too thin. In general, I find that bad recordings are more enjoyable when played in my car audio system than Jim's HT3. So bear that in mind when you choose your speakers.

Thanks for the input, that is something I will certainly have to keep in mind...as I've always been a 'music first' kind of guy, I have many, many albums that won't ever be considered 'well recorded'. Whether they be metal, fusion, etc. Something that works great for some things (at the expense of others) probably won't fly too well...still want to give them a try at some point though (really trying to make it out to Denver). Again, I appreciate the info!  :thumb:

I totally agree.  Jazz is great on the HT3 but some of my harder music sounds kind of harsh.  I am curious to see how the HT3-N compares.  I would be willing to give up some clarity in favor of more forgiveness.

I'm not sure I agree that the HT3 is good for only certain types of music.  Just this morning I was listening to Led Zeppelin 2, and it never sounded better.  It's true that the recording is not the best in the rock universe, but it's great to hear everything that's on it--which is what the HT3 does.

It is true that the speakers are very revealing.  If you're listening in a reflective room, the way certain albums are produced may sound bright.  But the way to handle that is not to buy less-revealing speakers.  I would suggest either room treatment, tube equipment, or a good tone control.  All three of these things will likely make everything sound better, instead of making some things sound "better" and others worse.

I have read the last few posts with great interest and have a few observations I might share. As always, your opinions may vary.

Speaker design is all about trade-offs.  This is because there is no such thing as a perfect speaker driver.

Every driver exhibits a certain level of distortion and has a certain amount of veiling.  Distortion adds the illusion of warmth and veiling masks detail.

Some people profess to prefer a "warmer" speaker.  This can be accomplished by utilizing a driver with higher distortion levels.  But keep in mind here, that the "warmth" is not in the music being listened to.  It is being added by the speaker drivers to the signal being reproduced.

Veiling relates to the driver's ability to reproduce detail.  The higher the levels of veiling, the less detail will be apparent in the reproduced sound.

The Veracity model speakers were designed using some of the lowest distortion, least veiling drivers on the market today.  The idea was to produce a speaker that would let you hear all the detail available in a recording.  (This was of my own choosing and probably due to the fact that I have worked in recording studios over the years.  In this environment, it is critical that you be able to hear everything in the mix.)

The magnesium-coned Seas Excel W18 is an extremely stiff, extremely low-mass driver.  This allows it to reproduce minute detail in a recording (little veiling).  While this renders great recordings in an extremely life-like fashion, it can also lay bare any deficiencies in a poor recording.

The HT3-N will use the Nextel version of the W18.  Since the motor structure is essentially the same, I would suspect that distortion levels will be similarly low.  But it uses a Nextel-coated paper woofer with higher mass.  My guess at this point is that it will have more inherent veiling than the magnesium-coned W18.

So there is a good chance it will be slightly more "forgiving."

The cabinets that will be used for the first pair of HT3-N's had final coats of topcoat applied today.  They will now have to sit about a week before we can rub them out to a high-gloss finish.  Once that is done, we can install the drivers and A/B them with a pair of stock HT3's.

This will probably take place in about a week and a half and I will let you know what we hear.

Jim,

Thanks for (yet again) a thorough and detailed explanation of the whats and whys behind what you do...greatly, greatly appreciated!  :thumb:

For those who stated that they didn't enjoy their rock albums as much, can you share exactly which artists/albums you tried? My collection/taste lies heavily in '70's rock (Black Sabbath, ELP, Colosseum, Captain Beyond, Deep Purple, you name it) to classic fusion (Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra), to more 'adult' classic stuff (Steely Dan, Moody Blues, etc) to some modern electronica (trance/techno, downtempo), to classical. While I don't listen to the old Anthrax LP's as much as I used to (maybe once a month), I'd still want something that would present them in an enjoyable matter. I don't want to steer into a 'this vs that' discussion, but the other speakers I was considering are Legacy Focus 20/20's (or Whispers if I can swing a good deal)...while some people harp on them for whatever reason, they have a reputation for being very clear yet dynamic, and 'great for rock' (which carries a stigma in some circles).

I suppose what I'm looking for probably doesn't exist, and as Jim said, its all about trade-offs...maybe 2 systems are in order? Can something go from '80's metal to Miles Davis to Vivaldi and not stumble somewhere along the line?

EDIT: Wanted to add that I've been a loyal Polk fan for years (SDA's) but am looking to gain more clarity, especially in the midrange, without losing much in terms of soundstage and power...I felt the Polks 'did it all' as well as could be expected, but am looking for something that 'does it all, just better'.  :green:

Speaking of Led Zepplin.

Without a doubt, and a great addition to any Reference CD is the classic "Stairway to Heaven".

If you are not "off put" by its overplay on FM, the sonic qualities of this cut are incredible and on a great system will no doubt please any Zepplin and or 70's Rock fan.

From the opening acoustic guitar "on the listener's left", to the voice of Robert Plant, to the incredible drumming of John Bonham, this is a great cut content wise, as well as technically.

For some classical, how about some lieder...one voice and a piano.  Or, other very simple pieces with a superb instrument played superbly and recorded superbly.  We know what one piano, or one violin, or one voice sounds like live and should sound like when reproduced.  A variety of this type of music will provide a good showcase of what a music system can produce.  Combine this with small ensembles, large ensembles, small performance rooms, and concert halls, and the music system will have many tests for us to judge it.

How about a track from Flim & The BB's disc "Tricycle"?  It's one of my favorite demos.  First track is a good choice; "thunder and birdies" is a good cut as well for demoing.   Great dynamics and detail.  Lots of good stuff on Bela Fleck's "Acoustic Planet" CD, too.

How about a track from Flim & The BB's disc "Tricycle"?  It's one of my favorite demos.  First track is a good choice; "thunder and birdies" is a good cut as well for demoing.   Great dynamics and detail.

You have good taste.  I grew up in Minnesota and started my first recording studio there.  Flim and the BB's were Minnesota studio musicians at the time.  I used Jim Johnson (Flim) on many studio sessions starting when he was about 17 years old (long before Flim and the BB's were born).  So my experience with these phenomenal musicians goes back to the early '70's.

The 3M company, based in St. Paul, was selling a large percentage of the magnetic tape used in studios in those days.  Looking to the future, they began to work on the development of a whole new way of recording music - digitally.  This was quite a few years prior to the development of the CD and no standards existed.  So they were developing their own digital recording technology.

As they began to build recording systmes using their newly developed technology, they needed a place to test it.  There was an engineer at a studio called Sound 80 named Tom Jung (Tom later moved to NY and started the DMP label).  Tom was at the forefront of recoding technology for quite some time. I had been a studio musician in recording sessions with Tom starting in the mid '60's.  At any rate, Tom and a couple of studio musicians named Jim Johnson (nickname Flim)(bass), Bill Berg (drums)and Bill Barber (keyboards) (the BB's) started working with this new technology.

One huge advantage of this new technology was a tremendous increase in dynamic range.  Since they were basically the first group in the world to be able to record with this new level of dynamic range, they experimented with differences between loud and soft passages that were far greater than anyone had recorded before (it wasn't possible with magnetic tape) If you listen to their recordings, that is one thing that is very noticeable.

Later, Flim and the BB's let another musician into the group.  Dick Oats was a great read and flute player.  He didn't come from Minnesota (Iowa) and his name didn't start with a B, but he was so good they let him into the group anyway.

These guys, together with engineer Tom Jung, recorded many of the first digital recordings in the world.  The problem is, 3M decided not to get into the business and the proprietary machines they developed went out of existence.  So there is no way to play back many of these original recordings today.

But Tom Jung went on to form the DMP label and Flim and the BB's got together each year for a while to record another CD.  They played a few concert dates as well.  But they eventually each went their separate ways.  Bil Barber moved to the East Coast where is wife developed quite a reputation as a fashion designer.  Bill Berg went to work for Disney.  The last time I saw Jim Johnson (Flim), I was flipping channels late at night and saw him in the band on one of the network late night talk shows (I don't recall which).  I don't know what happened to Dick Oats.

Flim and the BB's have been used to demo audio gear since the mid '80's.  Their recordings are still some of the most dynamic and original you'll likely to find anywhere.

Sorry for the rambling, but the mention got me to reminisce a little.  Thanks.

So, yesterday I stoppd by a local audio store to listen to some speakers. Sales rep threw in a demo disc, first track was Jennifer Warnes, "Somewhere, Somebody" and the second track he played was Nils Lofgren, "Keith Don't Go." Funny. :-)

While I'm on the topic, the Salk Demo Disc has turned me onto - and caused me to go out and buy - Nils, "Acoustic Live," and Santana, "Supernatural." Ray LaMontange, Dean Peer, and Jennifer Warnes, each of whom I had never known before, are also on my "to-buy list."

Jim, I hope you get some kick-back from the artists. :-)

Tough question.  At the time I compiled the disc, Ray Charles had just completed his last CD and then passed away.  There isn't a bad cut on this CD, but I think three cuts are too much.  As for many of the other cuts, I guess I would probably pass on most of them - not because they are no good, but just because I've heard them so often.  There are other cuts I would use today and may work on a second generation CD in the not-too-distant future.

All in all, I think most of the cuts do a very good job showing off one or more performance attributes of the speakers.  But there are so many more cuts I have used in the recent past for demo purposes, I think I'd start from scratch on a whole new line-up.

Jim:

That would be great.  I know that you don't have enough to keep you busy.

In the interim, maybe Salk customers could come up with a Salk Customers' Demo CD.  We have the Outstanding Demo CD thread.  What if we selected 17 tracks that, in our collective opinion, best demonstrated the speakers' capabilities?   I think that this would be a bloodbath fun and would further demonstrate your customers' satisfaction with their speakers.

(If Jim says OK, maybe we should form a committee. :D   )

Good idea! Although I am guessing that it will be difficult to narrow it down to 17 tracks or so. :)

How about Salk Owners' Demo Disc 2010, SODD10?  A customer-generated demo disc could be a powerful statement about customer satisfaction.

This sounds like a really good idea, and I'm hoping somone will take the intiative.  Jim and I are always looking for good demo material.  Most of mine is classical and not always of help to people who come over to audition stuff at my house.  Jim's CD has some good stuff on it, but I'm sick of it, and some of it really isn't all that great.

I'm always making draft CD's for this purpose but often struggle with a cool tune that doesn't have the best audio reproduction.  But I'll bet I have about 6 prototypes in my Playlists on the Squeezebox.

Thought I'd offer up to Jim to DJ for him at AKFest so he can talk and I can manage the sound.  Some of the complaints from previous shows has been the limited repertoire and that is certainly impacted by time spent entertaining customers.

This is a great idea.  I tried once before to have those contributing to the "Outstanding Demo CD" thread to suggest the best of the best, but no one seemed too interested.  I think it would be great fun to develop a list and then narrow it down through a poll of some kind.

Jim and Dennis OK'ed a Salk Owners or Salk Customers' CD.  Shall we form a committee?  If not, I don't know how this will get accomplished.  If so, anyone wish to join the committee?  Anyone wish to chair the committee?  Jim stated that there would eventually be a poll about the final choices for the CD.

Very cool idea, I'll contribute what I can.  How are we going to compile files? email FLAC back and forth?  Everybody has to buy the CDs?  Host the proposed songs somewhere, so the committee can up/down-load the files for evaluation? Should genre diversity be a goal?  Should this be in it's own thread, so that it get's the proper attention?

...for some reason I tend to come up with a lot of questions when I start to think about stuff...  :dunno:

Cheers

I'd worry less about managing the actual files for now and lets decide on how to organize.  I suggest we create buckets to list songs in.  Perhaps:

Acoustic
Pop
Jazz
New age
Folk
Orchestral
Pipe organ
Chorale
etc.

And then we need to agree on the qualities we think make a track pass muster.  Is it no background noise, hi rez, or ?  Personally I do not concern myself with hi rez but am often bothered by a great recording tainted by high background hiss that can detract from the overall experience we hope someone will have with that otherwise good sound out front.

What do you think?

Maybe so, Red.  I figured it may be easier than creating polls.  Some may not know how to vote if you don't have the song or never heard it.  Maybe the first 15 submissions get on.  BTW, those cdr's are still coming.  Maybe I'll send a whole bunch if you volunteer to be the burner

Well I don't see polling as much as creation after we get our buckets filled up.  We can mix and match so the CD has a flow or life to it and with a variety, or not, that can be orchestrated.

Interesting & good concept. I don't have a problem burning any selected cuts to CD-R & sending it off to whom-ever, or emailing a wav file(s).    Seems I've got flac on one of my machines, but haven't used it as yet. I've thought of making my own demo since the STs took up residence.

I think BRM's thoughts on starting with what basic categories (buckets) selections should be from is a plan. I'd love to have it open to suggestions if that could be worked out, but logistically it could be a nightmare. Keep the ideas flowing, where there's a will, there's a way.  8)

Title: Re: Track List from Jim's Demo CD
Post by: floresjc on 22 Jun 2010, 09:43 pm
I'm new to this, but if I was going to do something like this, here's how I'd do it.

1. Select a committee, fairly small, maybe 5 people tops.
2. Committee outlines genre's/buckets.
3. Anyone from the Salk Owner's community can suggest songs to the committee until a certain date.

The purpose of the committee is to select a top 17 or whatever will fit on a single disc, with attention given to diversity of genres. Committee is going to have to be kind of "clever" about this bucket thing, since not everyone labels everything the same and you don't need 17 buckets for one disc. Or if Jim wants 2 discs or whatever he thinks would work at shows and what not. Typically, I find one disc restricting, so I usually have like a "fun" song disc with pop and rock and etc, and a more "artsy" disc that has things like jazz opera classical. But one disc is more easily managed and sent to customers and what not so I'm thinking he'd probably lean that route.

At least when I demo my speakers, I don't pay real close attention to things with superb sound quality or high rez. I want tracks that sound good and show off the capabilities, sure, but I find that people remain more engaged if I show them how good things they normally listen to sound. And so I generally end up playing the old vs new game with each genre, balancing technical superiority with fun. So for Jazz I might pick Birdland by Weather Report and Giant Steps by Coltrane (or Miles Davis Kind of Blue). For rock/pop I might pick "The Stone" by Dave Matthews Band and Tiny Dancer by Elton John. And so on, its pretty easy to cover 4-5 genres and fill up 17-20 slots.

I'm piecing together my 10th best of disc now - HEMI 10 - should be done in July.  Always difficult to just pick best recordings over fun tunes that sound "processed."

Anyone know if the "Jennifer Warnes / Somewhere, Somebody [The Hunter]" track came from the 1992 release or the 2009 release?

http://www.amazon.com/Hunter-Jennifer-Warnes/dp/B0000000KI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1281064759&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Hunter-Jennifer-Warnes/dp/B001OP4L5U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1281064759&sr=8-3

Obviously I'd prefer to get the much cheaper 1992 release, but not if the 2009 release has been newly mastered and is much better.

Must have been from the earlier release since I had it before 2009.  That said, the Blue Raincoat CD was re-mastered and it is much better.  So the 2009 version may be better.  I think the Hunter was a European CD.

I am currently listening to Jim's demo CD. Excellent selection of tracks showcasing the ability of my STs :). I will be buying the Jennifer Warnes, Ray Charles and Nils Lofgren (big fan) CDs. Is there a more up to date track list available as my disc seems different than the most recent updated track list. If any other thoughts on track selections are needed I would be happy to suggest some :).

It's interesting that everyone seems to really like the same tracks. These are my favorite (in bold):

Track 1: Jennifer Warnes / Somewhere, Somebody [The Hunter]
Track 2: Ray Montange / You Can Bring Me Flowers [Till the Sun Turns Black]
Track 3: Mary Fahl / Una Furtiva Lagrima [The Other Side of Time]
Track 4: Ray Charles / Here We Go Again (Featuring Norah Jones) [Genius Loves Company]
Track 5: Nils Loftgren / Keith Don’t Go [Acoustic Live]
Track 6: Lyle Lovett / She Already Made Up Her Mind [Joshua Judges Ruth]
Track 7: Ray Charles / Fever (Featuring Natalie Cole) [Genius Loves Company]
Track 8: Jennifer Warnes / I Can't Hide [The Hunter]
Track 9: George Winston / The Auction [Country: The Original Soundtrack]
Track 10: Ray Charles / Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (Featuring Elton John) [Genius Loves Company]
Track 11: Santana / Migra [Supernatural]
Track 12: Ray Charles / Do I Ever Cross Your Mind (Featuring Bonnie Raitt) [Genius Loves Company]
Track 13: Mario Frangoulis / Vincero, Ferdero [Sometimes I Dream]
Track 14: Jennifer Warnes / Lights of Louisianne [The Hunter]
Track 15: Doc Powell / Thank You [97th and Columbus]
Track 16: Dean Peer / Lord's Tundra [UCross]
Track 17: Blue Man Group / I Feel Love (Featuring Venus Hum) [The Complex]

As a result I've bought the Ray Montange, Nils Loftgren, and Ray Charles albums. With the Nils Loftgren and Ray Charles, I didn't find most of the other tracks on the albums as interesting, but with the Ray Montange album, whoa, the entire album is excellent!

Jim:

FYI, the new release of The Hunter was remastered by Cisco on a 24K gold CD (same as the Famous Blue Raincoat CD you refer to). The Absolute Sound recommended and rated it as a "Best Audiophile Label Recording" in its November, 2009 issue.

My only change to your list would be minus the Ray Charles track and plus the Santana and Dean Peer tracks. I ended up buying LaMontage, Warnes, Santana (dvd-a), Lofgren (i loved nearly everytrack). I think some artists may owe Jim a commission. :-)

So five minutes ago I was listening to the Lyle Lovett track, She Already Made Up Her Mind. I wasn't playing it loud mind you, when my wife came in the room and asked "What is that loud rumble shaking the whole house?" I really like that cut and my Salk SongTower Custom Editions really flesh out the bass. I really see no need for a subwoofer! I'm really loving these speakers.

The demo cd included the Beatles "Because" from the "Love" cd, A couple of Ray Charles, Ray Lamontagne ( ordered a few of his cd's). Nils Lofgren song is cool. Not sure on many of the others.
Nice demo disk to show off the Salks.

I tried to figure out the last few missing songs for the track list.  I haven't done an exhaustive verification, just trying to piece together what other people have said.  So here's the list I have:

Track #: Artist / Song Title [Album]
