Best speaker for under $40

That's right, I'm looking for a decent crap speaker. Something I can stand to listen to for use of breaking in my new amp. efficient would be nice, but not required. Only parameters are small, cheap, and cheap.  :P

I've never used these but I've read some good things about them.

How about a pair of headphones for that price?

Obviously, used is going to be your best bet - the only new things around that price that I've heard are the Best Buy Insignia Coaxials but I haven't seen them under $75 for a long time.

I have a bunch of KLH 911B's for garage & basement use, which used to go on sale for $20 a pair and are a surprisingly decent speaker. I haven't heard the current KLH equivalent, but you might be able to find them on sale somewhere.

It would be hard to beat the Dayton B652 for $25 per pair.

Now that's a sweet deal  :thumb:.  PE stuff is seldom top of the line, but it is seldom crap also.

Good find - looks like it probably is the same speaker as the KLH (Same Specs, Woofer/Tweeter description and exact cabinet dimensions), and $25 is a great price.

Just add a Parts Express Dayton $100 sub and you've got something that could sound pretty decent overall (although there are cheaper ones on that site too):

I've got this sub in my el-cheapo home theater system paired with some $50/pair AR speakers that I picked up on a closeout deal at www.jandr.com a few years ago. It does the job!

Thanks for all the replies. Wayne was kind enough to let me borrow his Michaura 55s which are more than up to the task of breakin.  They are actually pretty darn good little speakers. Keep the suggestions rolling though you ever know if someone else is in the market for such speakers.

Maybe a little off topic but you have to check out local thrift stores. First off I picked up a set of Klipsch KG1.5 for $15....cabinets were quite scratched but I resurfaced them and they look great....now are my mains in my HT setuop. But the greatest buy is a set of JBL L120 for $20 that were in sad shape. I replaced the surrounds for $25 and refinished the cabinets for another $15....these speakers retailed for $1100 in the 80's...all other components were fine and they sound amazing....new to the forum but you all are my kind of people.

Just ordered a pair of the parts express no brainers for my grandson. Should've ordered two pairs to get free shipping.  :duh:
