Jamming with Lou from Daedalus
« on: 6 Oct 2009, 07:06 pm »
As I said on my notes for the first day, we were FAR from done and ended up at the Daedalus room. We were listening to some wonderful music, tweaking the system here and there to help Lou get the best result. Then out of no where Lou grabs his gorgeous custom guitar with maple from and cocobolo side and back. It was gorgeous!

Of course Wayne and I couldn't just leave it at that. We begged Lou to play us something. Good thing we got him good and drunk before hand, because he not only obliged, he allowed me to record him playing it with my new high quality recording equipment. As this was a spur of the moment thing you can here talking in the background. I heard it at home and was so impressed I just had to mix it down. I was up until 2 am working on it, making sure it was not compress in the least. I have to say the quality of the recording is stellar!

The file is large (33mb) but it is uncompressed and all the dynamics are still there!

http://files.me.com/jasonmwong/x0jwcm.aif  (Please let me know if this works, it should download the file to you. If not let me know in private message and I'll work to fix it.)
Or check here for a FLAC compression done by MikeG http://www.mikegalusha.com/stuff/Lou_Jamming_3_3.flac

Pez,

At the first RMAF I had the privilage of having Lou play his guitar for Sunshinedawg and me in his room.

While he is too modest to say it, Lou is DAMN GOOD!!

BTW, I bet Lou's newest speakers do a killer job of displaying his guitar skills.

The link downloaded and played just fine. Excellent slide work and fine recording. What equipment did you use to make it?

You're not going to believe me if I tell you. But it's true.  Wayne, Lou and everyone else who heard the recording couldn't believe it either.

Then I used Garageband for leveling and conversion. Seriously.

We were playing on the Daedalus setup via CD and it, how did someone put it? It sounded like a Chesky. While I don't know about that, I can agree it sounded darn good.

Oh and Zybar, to say Lou is DAMN GOOD is an understatement.

Very cool. I converted it to flac for anyone who wants a smaller download.

About 9 megs instead of 33. You Mac guys think everyone has unlimited bandwidth.  aa

Pex, and Mike....Thanks guys!  :thumb:
The recording sounds great (in FLAC) using SoftSqueeze through my cheapo PC speakers.
Can't wait to hear it on my main system.

If Lou could come up with another dozen or so songs, he might just have an album.  aa

I made a point to meet Lou at the show even so briefly (like always)...great guy and very fine sounding speakers on a fast listen... Nice "on the spot" recording Pez, sounds very good (Mike's flac conversion)!! He can truly jam!  :thumb:

I was lucky enough to hear it live. It was fantastic and Pez did a wonderful job of capturing the moment. Lou is an incredible guitarist. :thumb: Lou also pulled out his guitar to keep the music flowing during the power outage on Saturday. :guitar:

I'm glad everyone likes it so much, I have to say watching Lou play that guitar was mind opening. He doesn't just strum it, he bends it to his will, LITERALLY! the man slaps it and bends the neck to get some really amazing sounds.  Definitely one of the highlights of the show.

Wow!  What a great job on "Spoonful"!  :thumb: I like it better than the original, and that's really saying something.

Again, AWESOME :guitar: guitar work and vocals.
Thanks for sharing,

Dan

thanks guys!!! you're all very kind, it was really off the cuff and rusty. anyhow I lifted the arraignment from my friend Martin Simpson, great guitarist whom I've had the honor of doing sound for a few times. btw, his new cd "prodigal son" is excellent!
I'm hoping to pull together a blues cd in the next year but this silly speaker thing just keeps me too busy....
