Looking for the right power cable
« on: 3 Mar 2024, 09:17 pm »
Hey all,

I am currently looking at power cables. I like the idea of DIY as I find better bang for the buck.

I have been looking at your Neotech offering, but I know nothing about these cables other than what I have read. I have considered buying several cables and connectors for comparison.  No one knows what I like better than me :)

Hello, and welcome.  DIY can be very rewarding for those who like to work with their hands.  Further, one usually has more options.

I could write a small book about my experience with different cables, and I'm not even a cable guy.  It is probably best to start with the basics.  What all will you be building a cable for?  What is the desired outcome?

What other cables (and cable parts) have you been looking at?

Hello, Jeff. Thank you for responding.
I will be building cables for all of the components in my system, totaling 6 power cables. Components are as listed; PC power supply(streamer), LPSU, ddc, Turntable, Integrated amplifier, power conditioner.

With this upgrade I hope to allow my components to sound more released/expressive. Also, more transparent of their sonic characteristics while gaining realism.

I am also considering Audio note isis and GR research. For plugs, Oyaide, Cardas and furutech are at the top of my list, but truthfully I'm open to just about anything.

Neotech is the real deal and a great place to start.
I also recommend Gotham which is pro audio cable that is built really well with excellent shielding.
Try to find plugs in the $50 or less range that are mostly copper. I hope someone will correct me because I've been looking, but all medical grade plugs from the likes of Pass and Seymore, Hubbell etc.. are mostly brass but they are built well.

I would recommend starting cheap with the first one and going form there. Here's an all copper plug for less than $30 at HiFi Collective:
https://www.hificollective.co.uk/power-connectors-gaofei-usmainsplug.html
Then,
On this page is every level you could want: https://www.hificollective.co.uk/components/us-mains-plugs.html
Don't over think it and agonize about gold vs rhodium plating etc... just start cheap and go from there. Stay patient as it takes along time for DIY PC's to settle down and start sounding stable. I put mine on the outdoor refrigerator (with a female adapter)  for a month or so before I start listening.  Move it around from component to component. Each one has a different power supply and reacts differently.

After 25 years of constantly swapping out power cords, the GR Research B24's are the best option and you can build your own if you want.

I also recommend Gotham

Thanks for the recommendation. I will get a better look at them. They seem to offer a lot of cables.

Is that the magic number?

Thank you.  It might take a bit to read. Longer to digest, but that looks like good reading :)

Approximate lengths?  Budget?

By luck it appears all six cable can be 1.5m.  I'm not sure.  $500-$600ish per cable...?

Lokie, while I appreciate your effort at resources, I do not appreciate the product links to a direct competitor :nono:  Just about all circle owners would consider it bad taste, and many would just delete it.  I'll let it stand, but it seemed like a good time to give notice

The right cable would be the one that reaches from the component to the outlet.

Below your budget...Viborg 1501 MBU series power cables found on Amazon ....1.5M $159.90. 30 day audition period/return option. For a few more bucks, I'd look at the GR Research power cables.

I found the link to the finished product but i cant find a link for the build your own. BTW, is that cable cryo treated?

I believe the power cord is made from the same wire as the 24-strand DIY speaker cable. Call them and they'll cryo the wire for you. Of course, buy your AC connectors from Jeff. I've always received great service from him.

I didn't realize I was in a circle. I also didn't know you were in the diy supply business.
Both points noted.

I think you are right. I was thinking they had a kit for some reason or another. I did try to call once today from work. Either the lines were messed up, or all their lines were busy. I'll try them again tomorrow or email them. I'm curious to see how much cryo is. I'd also like to see how much they refund on a 30 day trial. It might be worth it to buy at least one finished cable for evaluation.

I emailed Jeff about the unplated furutech. He said he did not have, but he was also not sure that was exactly what GR uses. He advised trying to buy them from GR as well. That way I could evaluate the same exact finish cable. Regardless, I did order several 5 foot pieces of cable and some ends. Jeff is even sending a few things that are not on his site. I can hardly wait because the parts should arrive the same day as my new power conditioner. :D

Personally if it was me, and I wanted the best mains cable, I would ask Jeff to sell sell some 9 GAUGE high purity stranded copper to make up my own,  or I would buy one of his Neotech UPOCC copper power cords.
