Over the years, there have been products that were insane bargains.  AR turntables, Advent speakers, etc.  Since I'm putting this in Danny's circle, I'll lead off with:

1. The AV123 X-Static speakers new at $599.

2. Mapletree Audio Linestage 2A/SE. High-end sound and sensitive to tube rolling for < $1k. Incredible bargain with P-to-P wiring, separate PS, and customized gain for each input.
(Had mine built new w/ Black Gate caps for $675.)

3. The AV123 X-LS speakers for $199/pair when they were introduced.

4. Magnepan MMG $599

I paid $104 for my Dynaco A25s in 1968- my first quality speaker. Original mylar tweeter was kind of rough and was replaced with a dome a bit later. 600,000 pairs were sold- those were the great days for stereo makers!

Best audio bargain ever: my ASL Wave 8s.  8 watt SEP (6BM8), point to point mono blocks $99ea, $119ea with tube cage.  I sprung (sprang?) for the cages.
Of course ever since I've been chasing my tail looking for speakers that I like and can afford and that will work with only 8 watts.

This can also be the reason why people spend thousands and thousands of dollars a year on great bargains

While the quality of some of it is not "perfect"  yet,  streaming audio  is becoming  a great way of discovereing new music  and  putting pretty  much  anything right at ones figner tips

The Ongaku Integrated Amplifier And College Radio Stations on any ol' FM Tuner, my favorite being the McIntosh MR-78 (though I've never heard the Marantz tube one).

What about bargain cartridges? Headphones? Any other $80K integrated amp suggestions (do they ever actually sell any of those Ongaku amps?) As far as a McIntosh tuner, I just can't see anything by Mc on a best value list.

My H.H. Scott LK-48B integrated tube amp kit that I bought for $75 and built as a teen about 1967.  Those over-engineered Scott amps were great sounding and with re-capping, they hold their own to this day.  I've bought a few of the factory wired versions off eBay and will some day re-cap them.

Hafler DH110 preamp.

I didn't remember that Scott sold kits???  Eico, Knight, Heathkit...  Scott stuff was known as high quality.

Pretty tough to beat any of the Squeezebox music streamers for the $ : hours of music enjoyment ratio.

The JBL L-88 speakers I bought for $168 each on July 7, 1972. the speakers were 2/3 of the famous L-100 with a 12" woofer and tweeter. Three years later I installed the LE5-2 mid-range for $56 each which turned them into L-100's. I use the speakers every day in my wood shop and they still rock!
