The room will dictate much of what you "should or should not" do. Suggest looking at the room modes your dimensions will enhance which may be detrimental to your enjoyment.

Also, when looking at setting up the speakers in the room, Vandersteen uses a mathematical layout which mimics the audible walkabout Wilson Audio uses, most likely ending up in the same spot. In this manual is an explanation:

Something at the first reflections, at least on the sidewalls, but also consider the ceiling - most chose absorption. I like diffusion but may change that on this upcoming room this fall.

The Vanderstein method is similar to what I've been using for years.  The odd dimensions are close to the actual room antinodes, even dimensions are close to nodes (close is fixed by Vanderstein's suggestion to move by two inches).  I use a common 2d room node calculator instead of dividing room dimension by odd numbers and place the speakers between nodes and antinodes.  After measurement I find that it's always the most even response.

Would rather have a decent room with a $2000 system than a crummy room with a $20,000 system.

Looking to build a music room in my basement and have read about using the golden ration that goes back to the Romans.  H=1, W=1.6, L=2.6.  Has anyone used this formula and how have the results been?

Two very detailed articles about acoustic room ratios:

Yep.  I've said some variation of this for a couple decades. 8) :thumb:
