Music From The Source- Bassist Cecil McBee recorded live leading a sextet featuring Chico Freeman (tenor sax) on the Inner City label.  Not a dull moment on this bad boy.  Good live-in-the-club sound, too,

G. D. Rosengrant, a man I've never met or as much as shared a word with sent me this clear out of the blue.  He must have read a previous comment about how enthused I am by this album and may not have shared my enthusiasm, or, just the opposite, may have.  I happen to know his name because it is written on the album cover the way a disc jockey might if he left his albums at the studio.  The album was and is in perfect shape.  To hear it you'd think it had never been played:

Scales- Manfred Schoof Quintet- ECM.  Recorded in the late 70's when the Europeans had taken the mantle from the avant-garde jazz movement in the US in the 60's.  The only name I recognize on the album is that of bassist Gunter Lenz.  This is one of the albums of the decade, imo.

I just checked ebay and don't see a copy for now.  I'll keep my eyes open for one.

In the meantime, another fruitful stop at the local record store- 3 very minty E.P.'s from the mid '50s

Shorty Rogers- Modern Sounds
Bud Shank and Three Trombones
and Bud's first headliner album  Bud Shank and Bob Brookmeyer- from  1954
Not a tic on any of the three. :hyper:

It's a secret, Jimbo.  You got to come to Abilene and I'll take you there-- blindfolded after a winding drive :D.

Seriously, most of this town is into classic rock, leaving most of the good jazz and classical to me.  Afraid my face has lit up too many time, and the owner knows that he can get more than the $2 for jazz that he used to charge me.  Those three were $5 each.  I just can't pass up any jazz that is really in good shape.

Jan Johansson - Jazz på ryska (1967)

Jan Johansson (September 16, 1931 – November 9, 1968) was a Swedish jazz pianist. He is little known outside Scandinavia, and his records are not widely available, though Jazz på svenska (Jazz in Swedish) has sold more than a quarter of a million copies, and is the best selling jazz release ever in Sweden.  Johansson was a native of Söderhamn, in the Hälsingland province of Sweden. Studying classical piano as a child, he would also go on to master the guitar, organ and accordion, before turning on to swing and bebop as a teenager.
