Memory Serves- Material with Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell, Billy Bang, Fred Firth and some other 80's jazz modernists (Electra Musician).  Puttin it on rat now.
Fugget about my post re: Material.  Just too syncopated and serves no player well.  See below . .
Here is one that I can recommend in the time of modern jazz music's electic semi-rock period- Last Exit with the likes of Sonny Sharrock (guitar), Peter Brotzmann (tenor), Bill Laswell (bass), and Ronald Shannon Jackson (drums) and the album is Iron Path.  It's balls to the wall and it gets me everytime I listen.  One must turn it seriously UP to fully get it all.

Arthur Dent - I'll look into Pure Food & Drug Act.  I don't have any Harvey Mandel.

won ton on - I have Soft Machine's Third and Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom.

Harvey started out playing underage in small Chicago blues clubs. He covers a pretty wide variety of sounds, though most is distinctly his. Blues is probably his most prevalent genre, though his Mercury Years collection is closer to jazz. His last few releases are pretty rock oriented. Planetary Warrior rocks pretty hard.

If you like SM's Third, you'll probably like Fourth, & Seven, and Bundles is a must have. Their 1st two are pretty much in a category by themselves combining psychedelia, rock, jazz, & classical. All their releases are pretty unique.

Lots of white blues players came out of Chicago in the 60's.  You should see Paul Butterfield's performance on the extended DVD of The Monterey Pop Festival.  It's better to me than eveything else accept for, maybe, Joplin.  I have a soft spot for Laura Nyro's little ballad, also, but Butterfield with Bloomfield and Bishop just nail it!

(Dolphy fans with a vinyl set-up: Try to find a 45 RPM version of this. Wow. Apologies in advance to your wallet).

Chris, you ever hear that duo album with Hawes and Charlie Haden . . Alone Together on A&M Horizon, I think?
Chris-  I misspoke.  The name of the album is "As Long As There Is Music" on Verve and consider this very highly recommend.  jim
