Title: Cat just pee'd on my 14B!
Post by: amblin on 8 Aug 2015, 08:22 am
No idea what's going on in their little mind, my 3yr old Turkish Van and his 3 kitties (2 months) just  decided to nest behind my amps....

And today at least one of them pee'd on the cloth dust cover of my 14B and the small ones are now especially attracted by the grilles on my MB2i,  which I got some heavy duty claw proof canvas covers made but they still manages to squeeze into the gap in front and climb all the way up...(those large mid ranges are especially fragile)

So...any experienced cat owners around? Any suggestions how to keep them away? I already tried 'restrict zone spray' and lemon/ citrus juice ...they fought the smell with pee...

Thanks

A

The covers may be what's attracting them (small spaces).

If its winter in your area the heat of the amp and the smell of hot varnish PCBs may attract pets, mainly cats.

Rub their nose in the pee and with a firm loving voice say NO!

Might work  :dunno:

You are at the front end of an irreversibly escalating problem. Get rid of your system or take decal's advice. No middle ground available in this.

Per the previous link I posted do not:

"What NOT to Do

Here are a few things to avoid when treating urine marking:

Do not rub your cat’s nose in his urine.
Do not throw things at your cat.
Do not clean up accidents with an ammonia-based cleanser. Urine contains ammonia, so cleaning with ammonia can attract your cat that same spot to urinate again."

You are going to have to clean up the cat pee with a product specifically made to eliminate the odor of the urine. As this is atypical behavior on the part of your cat you may need to have it visit the vet to see if there are any physical reasons for why it missed the litter box. You may need more than one litter box and the one you have must be scooped out everyday and depending on its size it may have to cleaned and the litter completely replaced once a week. If your room does not have a fancy multi-tier cat pole you might want to add one as well as a couple of scratching posts. If you put fresh catnip on the scratching posts and cat pole you may be able to attract the cats towards the preferred location and away from your gear.
Don't locate the big cat pole near the loudspeakers or within jumping distance of same. A cat bed large enough for mother and kittens away from drafts in the room may also be a good idea.
Hope these ideas are helpful.

Macrojack is right!.....I love cats, but I can't have one because I love HiFi just as much. A cats instinct in a house is to catch a mouse. I'm sure their acute hearing goes to the woofer and tweeter direction which is right behind the grill cloth just luring them like a small hole in the baseboard. Grills off? The cone movement would be icing on the cake to a cat, way better than a fake mouse. And who doesn't like the feel of basking in the sun. Cats are small enough to bask ontop of an amp. As an extra,a vacuum tube amp cover might give a little vibration too like a coin operated hotel bed on TV sitcoms. If there is some kind of spray that will prevent those cats habits I will buy it and a cat.....sincerely Mark Korda...P.S. I forgot about a turntable arm in motion?

You can try applying a cat urine deterrent after cleaning area in question with isopropyl alcohol:

http://www.petsmart.com/cat/repellents/whisker-city-no-mark-indoor-cat-urine-deterrent-zid36-5161165/cat-36-catid-200020;pgid=xi9Wu_p1FhtSRpv8Ff0oEfpr0000CUu830rl;sid=R2reQ4J9u3LZQ9e4uAOYR7B3iLRMj02j1aaPDz-I?_t=pfm%3Dcategory

Another option:

Cats hate vacuum cleaners & will typically peel out at the sight of one.  Use a vacuum cleaner in the area in question to shoo them away, then leave the vacuum in the area afterwards for a few days until they settle in to a new area.

Get a super soaker water pistol and let 'em have it any time they get near your audio.
You can do that from the comfort of your listening chair, the water range on those pistols is impressive.

After getting wet a few times they'll stay away as cats hate getting wet.

I've made "cat un-friendly" mats to discourage my cats from certain areas.  Using card stock or really thin poster board, I put thumbtacks facing upwards with the spacing smaller than the smallest cats paws.  One step and they get an unpleasant reminder to avoid that area.  They aren't hurt, just wary of that spot.  A more humane approach is to use double sided carpet tape around your gear.  Most cats don't like that fly-paper you've placed around your audio and will avoid it. You'll have to replace it as it loses its stickiness.  Elevate your speaker wires and power cords too or cover them with carpet runners to keep the fur-babies from nesting in your wire nest.

Once that's taken care of, contact your vet to see what's the real cause.  Urinary tract infections will cause them to go outside the litter box due to the discomfort.  Take care of your babies and they will get back to a normal litter box routine.

I've used and enzyme cleaner from Bissell and it works pretty well.  Good luck with getting this under control

My Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III HSE speakers look like giant scratching posts to my cat.  I have the boxes my Klipsch RF-82 ii's came in covering them when not in use.  Luckily, he's not interested in the Klipschs.  I had a custom dust cover made for my Opera Consancne LP-2.0 to keep that cat away from it.  He also likes to lay on top of my YS Audio / Audio Experience A2 when not in use but that has not done any harm.  He's old enough where he won't pee on it. :)

You may want to look at these if you continue to have problems after a vet visit. http://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_0_8?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=scat+mat&sprefix=Scat+mat%2Caps%2C415

The vet visit and this will be much less expensive in the long run. Here is my little furball friend, who is the best cat ever. She doesn't jump on counters, amps, or mess with anything else.

Please pick up some "Sticky Paws" double sided tape and use it generously where you don't want your cats.  If you are not familiar with it, here is a link:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007I08FI4/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687562&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00IUHX55W&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1X0BBDEGBA580WJSP14H (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007I08FI4/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687562&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00IUHX55W&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1X0BBDEGBA580WJSP14H)

While designed to prevent scratching, you can use it to prevent going certain places (they won't walk/sleep on Sticky Paws tape).  It is available in sheets and in a roller dispenser.

Plastic carpet liners.....the type with the points on the bottom to prevent slipping.
Turn them upside down at door entrance to prevent cats, children and mother inlaws
from entering your music room.

I just picked up some nice thick foam jigsaw floor mats from B&Q to cover the entire front and side of the speaker and had my cat checked by vets, he's fine but the permanent fix would be to  :nono:his plums....

I'll add another litter box and more claw mats tomorrow  :green:

We had a cat once that was peeing where we didn't want it to, I put his food bowl at that location for awhile and he stopped. Then I moved it a couple of weeks later and he never did it again. If you have baby kittens they are like kids. Out of site out of mind, don't let them in the area until they are older.

I would also try the above suggestion of sticky tape. My cat hates it on him anywhere and runs for the hills.

The one thing I've learned about cats is you can't leave them free to roam in your house when you're not home if you want them to learn not to get on certain things like the kitchen counter or your speakers. You have to put them in a space that is closed off from the rest of the house. We have always put our cats in the laundry room locked down when we aren't home. I have never had a cat that has gotten on the counter or table because when I'm home and they are learning I teach them what they can and can't do. When I'm gone they don't have the chance to make a mistake because they are in their own space. Now after 8 years I can leave my cat in the house if I choose, free to roam and he would never even think of getting on the counters or mess with my gear. People that let their cats roam when they are not home from the get go have cats that do whatever they want and that's the problem in my opinion.

I guess it depends the cat.  I had 3 cats (at the same time) and none of them bothered my AV gear (in the living room), including an SVS cylinder sub which could easily have become a giant scratching post.

I can't say I can explain why they didn't mess with my gear; I didn't do anything special to "cat proof" my living room and gear.

Perhaps I was just lucky.

I'm sorry for bumping this old thread, but I've finally found something that works for me and my xbox!

One of my 2 cats (both neutered males) had taken to painting all of my walls, furniture, and anything else he could reach. I was horrified when I got a UV light. He never did that in all of the 9 years I've had him and didn't when I got him a buddy (they love each other and did so right away) but when a strange black cat started showing up outside both of my cats went nuts and the older one (9) started his wall painting, as well as the curtains out in the kitty room. I couldn't keep up with it.

My cats are indoor cats so it's not like the stray is actually going to get in here but they both hate him (and he is weird...my neighbor's cats hate him too). I've tried cleaning with a pet urine enzyme and then spraying some "No More Spraying" but that hasn't worked.

He's a sneaky little bugger too; he waits until he thinks I'm not looking and then does it. He's learned that the minute I see him backing his butt up to something he gets yelled at.

It wasn't until I found "Cat Spraying No More" that I was able to finally get rid of this tiresome behavior. Now my house nor my ropes don't smell like a litter box anymore

Here's a link the their site if you're interested in checking it out, I highly recommend this:

People that let their cats roam when they are not home from the get go have cats that do whatever they want and that's the problem in my opinion.

There you go. It's their house not yours. That's how they think, and most owners enable that whether they know it or not.

Cats are just not meant to be domesticated. Sure, like people, you have some here and there are more accommodating but by and large we and they are not compatible. And if there is more than one owner, you have to be on the same page or it's pointless training in any way. I was a 'step-dad' to a cat for 12 years and as adorable as he could be at times, he couldn't care less about anything but the basics - food, warmth, excretion. My gf just was not able to enforce any meaningful discipline and I had step in and be the bad guy all the time. Finally, I decided to just research the hell out of how to take care of cats and I just burst out laughing all the time. Because no one has any real clue about what to do. A million 'tips and tricks' that are inconsistent and mostly ineffective. What IS consistent is the amount of advice that leads to purchasing useless cat products to feed an exploding multi-billion dollar industry. I was generally shocked at how little real information there is on being a cat owner.

Long story short - create a physical barrier to the gear and call it a day. Cause that pee smell ain't gone even if you think it is. And if they are in any way out of sorts they will head right back to that area no matter what you do...

When young, our cats would do all sorts of things. But just like a small child you can teach them what is okay and what is not okay.

If there is some reason your cats are trying to get into that place, you may want to find a better alternative for them. Just like if you don't have enough clean litter boxes or enough good-condition scratching posts, you need to provide enough warm safe places for them.

Some people have pet allergies. The peeing on equipment is a bit extreme though. My sister has 2 dogs. As much as I like does, her damn dogs drool and slobber all over everything. And they smell. Really, really bad. She’s given me clothes for my kids that her kids outgrew, and I can smell it before I open the bags. I politely take them and put them straight in the trash when she’s gone. And no, I’m not overly sensitive to it as everyone says the same thing about her house and everything that comes out of it.

That’s why I like the “smoke and pet-free home” in the ads.

I too don't dislike dogs, but no sir.  No dogs (or other pets) here as well.  Your diatribe was kinda spot on... and entertaining.

I've also see "kid free" zone.  I understand that to be important for the ultimate protection of your gear, but I just can't free my home of that.  When I get little ones in my listening area I'm the ultimate Watch Captain in the watch tower at Sing Sing.  They always know the rules.

I’ve got 2 kids and a cat. None of them have messed with my stuff. I have no idea what it is, but my cat leaves no traces of his existence behind. My cousin who’s more allergic to cats than anyone I’ve ever met is perfectly fine in my house. When my now 6 year old was born, he came over for the first time in years. He was here for 2 hours before he realized we had a cat. And he only realized it when he saw the cat sitting about 5 feet away from him. He looked at me really awkwardly and said “I didn’t know you had a cat.” We all started laughing because we just didn’t think about his allergies. He was here 4-5 hours and no reaction at all. I’ve seen him stop in the doorway and walk away at other people’s homes.

My older daughter almost touched an exposed tweeter once. She was 2 or 3. I told her no in a nice way and she never did anything like that again. Some people’s pets and kids destroy everything. I guess I got lucky because mine haven’t. Except for my youngest one time - when she was learning her letters, she picked up a pebble and tried to write her name on my wife’s car’s fender. She got “Em” of Emily before my wife caught her while she was buckling our other daughter in her car seat. Quite comical. It’ll buff out when I get around to it.

Yep...had a couple of cats when the kids were younger. At least $10k of damage throughout the years, including removing all the carpet in the house, drywall, some furniture  and having the pleasure of them using my camera case (pelican case) as a litter box. Peed over two camera bodies and several len's........had to go out for a long walk after that.
