12" Sub Question
« on: 8 Jun 2012, 08:04 pm »
My friend just finished his basement and wants to replace his HTiB set-up but doesn't want to drop a whole lot of money. For the sub I was thinking maybe of putting the SW-12B in enclosure: http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_136&products_id=905 , if it models well in WinISD. However, I'm a total noob when using it so is there anyone proficient with it that would be able to tell me if they are a suitable match? For the amp I was thinking of going with the Apex Sr. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That is a really good amp. I'd get the version with the 2db bass boost in the 21-22Hz region.

Then get one of these PR's before they're gone: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=107055.msg1099255#msg1099255

Then build this box: http://gr-research.com/pdf/sub.pdf

This will give you a -3db of 20Hz or less.

If you want to go sealed then build a 1.2 cubic foot sealed box that is braced really well. The more solid the better. Box resonances kill sound quality. I wouldn't even consider a lightly braced box.

Then get the Apex Sr. amp with the bass mod that gives you a 6db boost at 30Hz. That will mirror some of the sealed box roll off to give you a pretty flat response with a -3db in the mid 20's.

Thanks for the info Danny. Where would the amp go in a box like that? Sorry I'm new to sub building.

Also, to be sure, the SW-12B isn't a good match for that kit from eD?

You can cut through the braces on one side and mount it in the side of the box.

A 3/4" box with one brace? I don't think so. That thing will buzz like a bumble bee with that 12" woofer jerking on it.

The SW-12B woofer needs an optimal ported box of about 2.3 cubic feet with a 5" diameter port that is 52 inches long. This is why I used it with a passive radiator.

All of my PR's are long gone. I sold out of them over a year ago. But this customer has two of them that he is offering. See the link.

So for sealed, maybe something like this: http://www.diysoundgroup.com/flat-packs-1/subwoofer-flatpacks/1-25-sub-flat-pack.html

He could just get the blank baffle and do the cut himself. Does it have enough bracing?

That is better but still pretty lightly braced. Divide each of those panels up with another brace and it would be pretty good.

Here is my 1.5 cubic foot box for our servo sub: http://www.gr-research.com/pdf/singleservo.pdf It has a brace every 3".

This box is better: http://www.gr-research.com/pdf/sandbox.pdf
