Title: The NFL Season, 2019-2020
Post by: JerryM on 10 Sep 2019, 03:33 am
Here we go!

Atrocious officiating for tonight's Saints' game, but the Saints prevailed.  :thumb:

Two lead changes in the last minute of the game, a career long game winning field goal, and you're complaining about officials?  C'mon man!  A great game with two good teams slamming at each other all night.  Had to be the hardest hitting game all weekend.  The Saints have gotten robbed two years in a row by circumstances at the end of the game, maybe this win in this fashion is a portent of things to come.

that's almost as tough as being a Bill's fan, but at least I can remember back to Kemp, Bass, Gilchrist, Dubenion, Stratton and the list goes on.

As for last nights Saints / Texans game, one of the most entertaining in quite some time

My observation so far is pretty simple. Some teams were simply not prepared( or conditioned) for the start of the season. The Bears, Steelers and Browns to name a few. On the other side of the coin you've got the Patriots, Rams, Ravens, etc.  I think I'll blame or credit the head coaches for the crappy or stellar results.

OK, just one game, from what I heard and the clips I saw, you have a new QB.  Its hard to tell without watching the game to know how well Jones really played, but his stats looked good.   Probably as good as anyone could have dreamed for.

My Rams tried to give the game away last night, but the defense was tough at the end.  And Baker still has some growing to do.

The Giants are rebuilding, and the arrow is pointing up.  QB, RB, G are set.  Keep building, don't go for quick fixes, and you'll have a real team in 3-4 years.  I see the Giants as the Cowboys competition over the next decade, not the Eagles.

That's hilarious!  As some may recall I have dual allegiances to both the Eagles and Steelers having lived some number of decades in each city so you can imagine my consternation.  To double it up I just moved back to the Pittsburgh area after thirty years in Philly.  So I should buy a bunch of Steeler gear, right?  I just don't have the heart.  Walmart has the obligatory aisle of Steeler merchandise, untouched, no one in the aisle, when I started brousing two store personnel looked over, perhaps hoping I might steal something to make it look better.  I can imagine a similar area in green on the other side of the state.

We'll see if the Bills have the mettle to go toe to toe against NE this Sunday.  We all know who the better team is here but TB and Co. also have not played any team of significance.  Bills defense turning out to be better this year than last.  A few breaks and who knows.  Only the Pats are better than the Bills in this division.

It feels as if it's all positions this year, receivers, RB, D linemen, everybody's getting injured at a seemingly higher rate.  I have no statistics, only impressions, but if true likely the reduced conditioning and scrimmaging in preseason.

Yeah, I made a rough distance estimate on one replay and I believe you could literally drive a full size pickup truck through the gap, not kidding.  It was off left tackle and the young man I was watching with looked over at my 65yo fat, infirmed self and said damn, either one of us could get through that hole.

Did anyone else think it was pass interference on that last play in the end zone?  I was waiting for Green Bay to throw a challenge flag, I suppose you can't challenge PI in the last 2 minutes?

There are a lot of Patriot fans in FL.

Every football fan can only wish there team was as successful as the Pats.

All is good in Steeler country again, eight sacks is a brutal breakdown of the St Ignatius girls junior varsity squad from Cincinnati.  On one sack the Bungles left guard faced the Steeler back up tackle head on, no games, no twists, no combination block, just a straight up rush in his lane, and he completely wiffed.  With line play like that I can't imagine that Cincinnati wins a game this year.  The Steelers will have a real test against Baltimore next week and we'll see what they really have.

In other news the safety nets under the Walt Wittman bridge went unused this week in Philadelphia.

I went to Nashville for the game, un”bill”ievable turnout from the Bills mafia... it was packed with fans. Really cool to be a part of.  I don’t know if you saw the video on the kid who did the table jump and almost killed himself, we walked by him probably 10 minutes after he did it and other fans were working on him. You can’t get through to everyone and there will always be a few that’ll make bad decisions, especially when alcohol is involved. Add social media and viral videos and it gets magnified.

Unfortunately, because of a bunch of these videos being posted, the perception is that all of the Bills fans are crazy... yes, we’re passionate, but most are genuinely nice people. I’d rather be known for the video below as opposed to a table jump video.

I don’t want to take this thread off topic, I’d rather it sticks to discussing the games.  :D

Nope.  The Jets have nothing to play for.  They're in the race to the bottom.  The Eagles still were playing for first place, and were playing an equally schizoid team in the Cowboys.  The Jets are just a bad team, but no one knows what the Eagles are.

If I remember correctly, when the Eagles and that team faced off in the Superbowl, the EAGLES were victorious.  Unless you have some alternative facts to offer.  Are you seriously disputing the fact that you guys LOST?  And that Brady was left shaking his head on the bench with a deer in the headlights look?  Didn't think so.

The point being be careful when talking trash about another team while puffing your chest out about yours, you just might get bit in the ass when you're not looking.  It's simply not good form.

Yes of course I was being over the top to make a point.  I have two teams, the Eagles finally won one after years of being, as it was once said about my other team, three bricks shy of a load.  The Steelers have been a storied team since that incredible team in the 70s, however both are in a terrible morass this year.  The Eagles cannot play offense without Peters at left tackle and can't play defense when Mills is at corner.  If they get healthy they'll be a different team, but you can't count on being 100% healthy in today's NFL and they're very thin on the second level at many positions.  The Steelers are not the same team without the three B's.

well, with all the Eagles' discussion the last few posts it seems interesting that they are only 1 1/2 pt underdogs going into this weekend against the Bills. I would have thought with the Fletcher Cox episode at his house threatening to 'blow of the head' of a potential intruder and the former Eagle player who was let go lashing out at his teammates that the Bills would have at least the 3 point 'home field' spread..........

On a brighter note in Philly, thumbs up for the signing of Joe Girardi as the Phillies next manager !

7 and 1 going into the Bye week.

Well Bflo returned 'true to form' today !

I thought the Bills played pretty well and were in it till late in the game.  They just weren't able to put together drives against the iggles and Philly took over with an 8 minute drive aided by penalties and Wentz scrambling.

The bigger story is once again penalties and refs deciding close games.  The games are virtually unwatchable with all the flags.  This all stems from the NFL wanting high scoring games and the revised pass coverage rules in the late seventies.  DBs can't effectively jam receivers before the ball is thrown allowing receivers to run wild through the defensive backfield causing DBs to commit PI on virtually every play.  During the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s this was controlled by receivers getting slobberknocked if they ran some of these routes so QBs wouldn't throw anywhere they felt like it.  Now we quite rightly have player protection penalties to keep players from drooling out of their mouths in old age, putting way to much pressure on DBs to cover.

Concurrently O linemen have to hold on every play because it's such a passing league they can't get their QB killed which causes holding penalties on every other big play.  Which leads to these ridiculous QB protection penalties where you can't touch them.  I'm thinking it could be greatly reduced by repealing the Mel Blunt rule and allow contact by DBs until the ball is in the air, I imagine we could reduce penalties by half with that one simple change.  What do you guys think?

I think the rules are fine. It's the players and coaches unwilling to adapt to them and being lazy. Its way easier to hold on every play and hope you don't get caught. Rules are the same for both teams so no excuses please for their behavior. I'm not sick of the flags, I'm sick of the lazy players holding on every single play. Its called "cheating".

your second paragraph speaks volumes, that's why I rarely watch a game anymore, wait till the end and watch the high lites. Or in the case of the Bills the 'low lites'.  Yesterdays game could be summed up in one word ............ 'run'.  The Bills couldn't (like they have been unable to all season) and their defense couldn't stop it. With that being said they will be lucky to win 5 more games.

The refs were once again beyond horrible, close to criminal.  The referees have decided they don't like the challenge flag on PI, or any penalties for that matter, and have decided to legislate on the field by denying any PI challenge no matter the merits.  In the Steeler/Colts game PI was called on a ball literally 5 yards over the head of the players and 10 yards past them.  "Rule 8, Section 5, Article 3(c) identifies as a permissible act “[c]ontact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players".  Yet Tomlin's challenge was denied.  This is a clear and willful violation of the rules of the NFL by fiat of the referees.  They should all be fired for this and general incompetence.

Hate challenges, instant replays, tickers across the bottom of the screen, all the commercials, interviews, highlights from other games, multiple time outs, etc. in NFL or college football.  It's just a game, focus on it and get on with it.  Not so many years ago a college or NFL football game was routinely played in 3 hours, now it 3:30 or longer.  I DVR everything and fast forward between most plays just to lose all the blah blah blah commentary.  For a good alternative watch Canadian Football.

Cowboy fans have been hoping for his departure for at least a couple of years.  The coaching incompetence last night will probably lead to his not being offered a new contract at the end of the season.  As far as dirt? No, Jerry was simply hoping to not have to start over with a new staff.

Dallas fans are hoping for lifetime suspension... wait, wrong Garrett.  Nevermind.
Seriously, it's assault with a weapon.  He needs a conviction, and perhaps probably suspended sentence.  The line in the sand in the NFL is not clear, but it will be after it goes to court.  First, you have to find a DA in Ohio that would take the case... might not be easy to do.

I though that defensive pro American football players had to be rather smart to work out all the different patterns that they run. Yet long before the end of the game, the Cleveland defense committed 4 or 5 fouls almost back to back. In one kick, the defensive player ran the length of the field then was the first to touch the ball.

I think we witnessed the end of another NFL career.

Indefinite suspension for Garrett, which even as a Steeler fan I find harsh.  A year, yes, that would be fair and would send an appropriate message.  Rudolph took it like a man and refused to file any charges, good show young man.  And I'm glad the league meted out the correct punishment for the other players, three games for Pouncey seemed right, I guessed he'd get four.  Garrett was wrong, absolutely and without question, but Rudolph chased him down the field trying to get at him through a Steeler lineman when he got hit with his own helmet, which apparently caused no injury.  Hopefully it will be reduced to something more appropriate upon appeal.

Hmm, a Dallas fan deflecting to another subject when the cowgirls lose, nothing new again in the world.  If the cowgirls aren't the greatest team on the planet, it must be something else that we're talking about.

Being in the Carolinas for the holiday I didn't see more than the highlights of the Eagle debacle, but just the headlines were enough, they stink when they don't have any starters playing.

But the big news throughout the league is that the Patriots can be easily beaten by doubling Edelman and White the whole game, nobody else can make a play.  It only took the league 13 weeks to figure that out, and some of these coaches are supposed to be brilliant?

That's uncalled for Skippy.  If you're not mature enough to keep it to football maybe you need to find another board to be on.  And you validated my point.  Typical cowgirl fan.  Your team sucks and you fall to personal attacks and insults.  My team sucks and I accept it, I bemoan their suckiness, but since I'm not on the field nor own an interest in the team I can separate my fandom from reality.  You need a dose of that son.

One interesting observation, the , what I call 'phony Cowboy' fans(those not from Texas and nothing but bandwagon jumpers) have again faded into darkness again given that 'Jimmys Boys' are really not that good. On the other side of the coin their twin brothers (phony Niner fans) are now back in full force.

This observation is one made of the various weenie heads at my local gym and what I see on the street. I do my best to avoid Walmart where I suspect most of them hang out .........

Yeah, when you lose all of your receivers, all of your running backs, half your db's, and then your starting QB goes out with a concussion very early in the playoff game it doesn't give you a lot of hope for victory against even the St Ignatious girls jv team.   You're right, they went a lot further than most expected.  I picked Seattle in my pools, but thought the Eagles had a shot until Wentz went down.  Not a dirty hit by Clowny, just football, but Wentz is snakebit for playoff games.

Not a dirty hit by Clowny, just football, but Wentz is snakebit for playoff games.

as for Clowney's hit, BS, he CLEARLY led with the crown of his helmet !

I have to admit that this is the first time ever at this point that I like all the teams left! I'm pretty happy with any team that wins it.

My preference goes by 1) the team that has never been in a SB > last) the teams that have won the SB most often.

With the Patriots eliminated I think that's pretty much everybody's view.  Sure I'd like to see my Steelers or Eagles in the hunt, but neither really deserved it this year.  Not hearing any more BS about Brady other than speculation on his retirement this week, which will fade quickly, is such a blessing.

I fully understand the cheap shot accusations against Clowny, it could easily be interpreted that way.  I saw it differently, but wouldn't shed a tear if he got a suspension.  At the end of the day he did have helmet to helmet contact with a QB on the ground regardless of motivation.

They didn't just lose, they got their butt kicked in every facet of the game.  It looked like the entire team wasn't ready to play, it wasn't just the QB playing bad or receivers dropping the ball or defense not getting off the field, the whole team was flat.  I have to lay that on the coach.

Yesterdays games were pretty interesting. I thought the Vikings would give the 49ers a better game.
The way they beat the Saints was an eye opener. Very good defense. Didn't play that way yesterday.
The Ravens losing to the Titans was a real shocker. Titans running backs did a great job moving the ball
on the ground. More games today. Might be more shockers!!!!

I felt sorry for the fans, that was going to be a long afternoon watching them get their butts kicked royally.

Imagine my surprise...

KC is a one point favorite this morning, that may move quite a bit before game time.  Two very complete teams will go at each other, I'm leaning San Fran.  Mahomes can evade rushers, but I think that constant pressure will have him make mistakes.  It may also make him create great plays, we'll see.

Agreed.  GB was very much like the Patriots this year, great quarterback, a few good linemen, not much else.  When against a racehorse like SF they just don't match up well, twice this year, I think the case is settled.  I thought the Titans might pull one more rabbit out of the hat, but their run was obviously over against another superior team.  So two good teams, I'm fine with that.

NFL casual these days.

Watching KC come back 2 weeks ago was inspiring, but spooky for the fans no doubt.

Seeing them go down again early yesterday felt the same.

Superbowl thoughts for them?  SF does not appear like the team you want to give a lead to for sure!

I have no dog in this fight, and I like both teams, both hard nosed, tough traditional football teams.  It's easy to root for either one, I'm rooting for a game I don't fall asleep on.  My son has a new gigantic TV, I'm not sure, I think 85", that I'll be watching the game on.  I think San Fransisco is the more complete team on both sides of the ball so would be my pick, but you can't discount the power of Mahomes.  Andy Reid never gets his teams ready for the big game, I'm not sure he can break that streak, but his team is a solid 1.5 point favorite.

If the Chiefs can stop the running game and don't get a gazillion points behind I think they might be okay.

Great game indeed.  I thought San Fran had it under control having throttled the KC offense with back to back interceptions of Mahomes in the third.  But as happens in the NFL when the Niners decided to sit on the lead KC flipped the switch and completed the big pass to Hill on 3rd and 15.  Jimmy G responded with three incompletions, one a missed TD to Sanders, then seemingly didn't recognize the obvious zero blitz on fourth.  Two great teams with the difference being the two quarterbacks.

In recent years, except for playoffs, the NFL had been getting more and more boring to me. This year I half-heartedly started out the season watching just to see how Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady would fare and ... meh ... zzz ... However, once I started paying attention to Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes my interest suddenly caught fire. I was glued to the TV from then on, just to watch those two guys. Both of those guys are so supremely/freakishly talented - what a thrill it was to watch them. And both seem superbly coached, meaning, freed up within their schemes to utilize their extreme talents. I already can't wait till next year to see more of each of them. And that is quite a feat for me, being a LLLOOOONNNGGG time suffering Lions fan.

We're definitely seeing a changing of the guard at the quarterback position, aren't we?
I think that's what made it dull for a bit, the older guys were losing their edge and the young bucks hadn't stepped up yet.
Not any more.

I will be surprised if TB12 has any meaningful success with that team, which for him would be Superbowl wins.  I wish him all the best, he has the right to work where he wants to, I believe his legacy would be better served retiring as a Patriot.  Should be interesting for fans.
