Quick Question the XLS Encore
« on: 7 Aug 2022, 10:44 pm »
Good Day Everyone!

I had a quick question on mounting the crossover board in the XLS Encore. Has anyone used Velcro? I thought I saw something about mounting with Velcro, but I could not find the thread or remember if this was a good idea or not.

Thank you, Kelly

I personally wouldn’t use it. The board will most likely vibrate inside the cabinet creating resonances.

Heavy duty Velcro might work.  Your surfaces better be clean for the adhesive.

I had not thought of that, I will stick to screws.

Much appreciated!!

You can also use 3M Heavy Duty adhesive foam strips I've had solid results with it in the past, but not ideal if you want to remove/upgrade the crossover in the future.

You could used 3M dual lock. I hold better that velcro and adhesive doesn't lose it holding power when warm.

That's what I used on my X-On Walls.   It took a flat-head screwdriver and some effort to pry them back up, so I'm confident the vibrations won't move anything.  Ever.

I've used it in a few builds without a problem. You can look at it two ways. It will dampen vibration into the crossover and therefore not cause the components to vibrate as much making them perform better and not fail as quickly. Or you and imagine it will cause the resonances. Actually, it will likely to do neither. But it will hold your board in place just fine. As it has mine.

I used heavy duty Velcro, it did not work well.  I would not recommend it.

What was it's mode of failure?

The problem has been that the Velcro adhesive when stick to the mdf fails.

When/if I lift the crossover the Velcro comes off completely and does not stay stuck to the mdf.   Perhaps spraying with a better adhesive would work?

Are they any adhesives that seem good for this?

That seems like a sticky problem to me.    Not a velcro problem.

I find you have to be sure the surface is very clean. Any dust, etc is going to be a problem. There are also better and worse brands/types of velcro. I've used if very successfully but screwing the Xover to the MDF on stand-offs is what I prefer to do. But that's a pain working inside a speaker hole. And who plans ahead enough to drill pilot holes before they assemble the speaker box. Not I !!!

When I built my NX-Studios, I used the ball & socket type speaker grill guides. Parts Express part #260-368

THESE THINGS

They secure really well, release really well, and cost a whopping $4.

That's a novel approach. I like it.   :thumb:

What Velcro did you use?   That 3M Dual Lock sticks like iron.   I actually used it on my X-On walls to keep them from vibrating against the wall, and then one of them ended up having a bad tweeter.   I went to pull it off the wall, and it literally took part of the wall with it.  Now I know to put a flathead screwdriver between the pieces to pry them loose.
