Cornet: power transformer temperature ?
« on: 29 Dec 2003, 02:12 am »
Guys,
I just finished building cornet today.
Everything worked well from the start.
Unit has been running on my bench for about 2...3 hours.
I noticed that power transformer runs very, very warm.
I would not say it's hot, as I can keep my hand on it forever. But, after a while it gets very uncomfortable.
So, how hot should it run ?

Thanks
Sergey

PS: I have implemented power supply CLC filter in place of just 47mf C10 input capacitor. Values calculated to 5mf - 30H - 22mf. This cuts ripples on C10 down to less then 50mv. I was going to design LC input filter but it required transformer with more then 420 vAc, too big for my chassis. So, I settled on just better CLC filter in place of simple C input one.
I'll post results after I play more with the unit and listen to it too.

The transformer temperature in my Cornet runs is as you describe - quite warm to the touch.  You can keep your hand on it but it is on the verge of being uncomfortable.

The Hammonds tend to run rather warm.  As do many cost-effective power transformer designs.  It will be hot to the touch but you won't have to let go.  This is normal.  And it's not even being run at full power.  Just don't wrap it up in styrofoam.

jh :)
