Soundfield Audio VSF-T1A
« on: 24 Jul 2013, 01:53 am »
I will be introducing my first Variable Sound Field series model, the Tower 1 Active, at the upcoming Capital Audio Fest event Jul 26th-28th.
Dual 8" aluminum woofers crossed at 1khz to a planar magnetic horn midtweeter and ribbon supertweeter (>15khz). Dual opposing side firing 12" subwoofers in a damped u-frame cardioid configuration, are powered by a 300w rms, 600w peak class D amplifier.
I've move my cabinet making facility from mainland China, to Seffner FL .
They are 46" H x 10" W x 14" D. Shown in a Padauk veneered finish.
I will add full specifications and measurement data to my website after the show.
Preliminary specs are: FR 20hz-23khz +/- 3db
Sens 94db @ 1m/2.83V
Impedance 8 ohms nominal, 5.3 minimum.

Come see us in Room 704

cheers,

AJ

Nice, AJ.

If these are at all like the monitors AJ had at LSAF earlier this year, y'all really need to put these on your list of things to listen to.  The planar horn mid is something to be heard.

Maybe.
Leaning strongly towards it, but have not yet signed up officially.

And the price is?
One hundred...million..

It's $3500/pr as shown.

Thanks Jonathon. These are the Biogenesis PED version of those. Top and bottom a bit more extended/refined.

cheers,

AJ

Hi AJ, could you elaborate on "variable" and "active" as they apply to this speaker?

Hi John,

The polar (and thus room) response can be varied at mid to high frequencies by a rear firing driver, with shaped/controlled/narrow enough directivity that it does not affect the frontal response, but will perceptually add spatially to the soundfield (pardon the pun). The intensity can be varied (including off) if the program material warrants it. I'm sure you are aware of the tradeoff of spaciousness vs "precision" etc, so I leave that up to the end users whims. Of course, unlike a dipole or traditional bipole etc, this "effect" can be varied at the source (rather than via external passive damping etc).
Ditto at LF, where the amp gain and low pass frequency can be varied (again, including off). So one could go (polar wise) from a monopole (there is a first order electrical filter on the midwoofers, but very low) to a cardioid(ish). The subs are damped, but do not fully remove the asymmetry of the rear response, which of course you know, grows up to the dipole peak. thus by varying the low pass, you can shift the upper limit of the cardioid radiation.
Yes, I know, for the "set and forget" crowd, this isn't the speaker.
Maybe I'll add a remote option for the true couch potatoes.

cheers,

AJ

That's a lot of speaker and amps for $3500. Hopefully you'll make RMAF but with so many shows now it has to be hard to please everyone.
