Title: Got the Magic 5 SE back! Wow!
Post by: soldermizer on 27 Dec 2006, 12:30 am
Got a repaired Magic 5 SE back from Dr. Lloyd today.  I'd done a crappy solder job when I built the kit back in '05.  It sounds to be working perfectly now.   I'm listening to Dire Strait's "Water of Love" & at the beginning just before the drums come in, I think I heard the "print through"; never noticed that before.   This only like the 3rd CD, and I'm already hearing things I never noted before.   All the more remarkable because the (current) set up is a mixed bag:  $50 dvd player and antique Carver M400t amp, spkrs are Maggie 1.6's.

Of course, I'm playing it rather loudly tonight :)

I tried the GE 5 star Black Triple Mica and noticed a very minor improvement with the Grado RS1.

Congrats! I'm using a Magic 5B SE with Maggies and tube amps also. Just out of curiosity, which topology do you prefer, the SRPP or CF?

To be honest, I have trouble hearing a difference.  I've had the unit for about 2 years.  Not connected for all of that time, but I can't seem to pick my "favorite."
