What I mean is the left speaker was dampened on both the left and right side first reflection point in the room

I can't picture what you mean by both left and right side first reflection point.  (For left speaker), left wall first reflection point is obvious, but the right wall first reflection point would be around on the right back corner of room or thereabouts, after music has already reached my ears  :scratch:

The A and B are first reflection points for both speakers on both sides of the room. If you kill the first reflection points on each side of each speaker then it will help tame the speaker and it will sound much better in the room. More about the speaker less about the room.
