I love my Super 3Rs
« on: 8 Oct 2004, 04:13 am »
Hi
I got my super 3Rs for a little more than 6 months now.  It is great. The
balance is excellent. And it reflects the different characters of each amp I
have used very clearly.

At first I was using a vintage Marantz 2220B receiver. It was warm and
nice. But the soundstage and the details are not the best. Later on I
changed to nOrh SE9, it was nice but not very impressive. I added a
preamp and it improved dramatically. Everything was better.

Then I got the Berning ZOTL, it was quite different from SE9. The OTL
circuit got a very distinctive sound, it is very transparent. At first it was a
very “SS” sound to me, it was very different. After 2 weeks, I switched
back to SE9 but I found myself couldn’t stand the sound anymore. I got
hooked on the OTL sound.

But ZOTL only got ~0.8 watt per channel. It wasn’t enough for my room. I
started looking for a similar sound with a little more power. Berning’s
other products are out of my budget so I have to rule them out; otherwise
I feel I would love those too.

Now I am using the SE OTL amp from Transcendent. I bought it in kit form
and assembled it myself. When I first turn it on, I knew this is the one I
am looking for. It is just wonderful. The bass is just amazing; it is almost
like I have a subwoofer in the room. It got 1.5 watts per channel for an 8
ohm speaker. It pumps enough music to fill my room. I think it will
probably perform better on Louis’s 16 ohm designs because it will have
about 3 watts when using a 16 ohm speaker.

Thank you Louis, for what a great speaker you have made for us.

I have had so much fun with stuff like that: comparing different amps and then finding something that does it.

I have the super 3's and also the grande 8's. I wouldn't mind getting the 6's either.  I might like them the best.

I'm very satisfied with fostex based speakers. Single driver fostex based speakers are my first choice.  There is a raw transparancy with them.  Though them with the right amplification, the music can just be put in the room.

Also is there any "drop in" upgrade driver plan?
The Fostex FX120 seems very interesting. Any other ideas?

Just received and they are beautiful. They are the red laminate.
I acquired them to mate with a pair of VTL TT25's.

The transaction has been smooth and Louis is sincere and executed
perfectly.

I will begin with a break in period and then assemble a system around
them.

I look forward to learning the 3 r's.

Hi J@ck

Many thanks for your great post. I'm so happy your enjoying the Super 3s and you descriptions of what you heard between all the amps really hits it right on. I was thinking for the longest time about getting the Transcendent Se OTL amp and now I will. There is something about OTLs and this amp is a great deal.

The Alnico's are a drop in replacemment in the Super 3s cabinet. The port should be a little longer for it though. The wide cabinet works well, but the narrow super 3s cabinet is better for the Alnico.

Hi Mike and rosypup,

Thanks again and keep us updated on the progress with the system. The Alnico's take a while to break in.

Adding the grande 6s and you'll have more speakers than some of my dealers.

Talk to you soon,
Louis
